WARNING: To prevent injury from high pressure air, never remove coalescing filter bowl or any other pressurized component until purge cycle has ended and system has been relieved of air pressure by opening service drain valve. WARNING: Compressor heads are extremely hot during operation. To avoid burning yourself, allow unit to cool before servicing. WARNING: Compressor motors are thermally protected with an automatic reset and may restart without warning. WARNING: Compressor motors are controlled by a pressure switch and will have line voltage applied to them whenever the tank pressure is below 80 PSI. The compressor may start without warning. IMPORTANT: Installations must be made to all local codes. CAUTION: Adequate line voltage is essential to proper compressor operation. Voltages outside the specified range in Section 2.1 require a buck or boost transformer. Otherwise, failure to start, circuit breaker tripping, overheating and compressor damage may occur. CAUTION: Excessive circuit lengths should be avoided to reduce voltage drop during compressor operation. Voltage measurements should be taken while the compressor is running. A static voltage reading is not a true indication of voltage supply during operation. CAUTION: To avoid compressor overheating and thermal shutdowns, the installation site must be properly ventilated and, if necessary, air conditioned to prevent ambient temperatures from exceeding 104 F/40 C. CAUTION: Compressors installed outdoors must be protected from rain, snow, direct sunlight and excess dust. Temperature limits and ventilation recommendations must also be followed. CAUTION: On OL-7 and OL-10 units, always keep both service switches in the ON position. Never run the compressor with one head turned OFF except for short periods of time while one head is not operational. CAUTION: Never turn a compressor head ON while other head is running as the heads will not start under back pressure. Allow the pressure switch to shut off the compressor at 100 PSI or disconnect the compressor main power supply to completely relieve line pressure through the solenoid valve.

SECTION 1.0 ABOUT AIRMAX OL-SERIES COMPRESSORS 1.1 Compressor Features AirMax Oil-less compressors combine highperformance design with rugged, trouble-free construction to provide high quality compressed dental air. Built with high-reliability oil-less piston compressor heads, they feature an integral desiccant drying system and in-line filter to ensure delivery of clean, dry air that is free of water, oil and other contaminants that could compromise dental procedures and handpiece operation. Air is stored in an ASME-certified tank. All units are also equipped with a low voltage relay to enable operation from a remote location. Optional sound-reducing covers are available for all configurations ( See the Matrx Dental Equipment Catalog for additional information). These compressors are available in 3-, 7- and 10-user configurations. Figure 1 identifies AirMax OL-Series components that are discussed in the operation and installation sections of this manual. 5 ABOUT AIRMAX OL-SERIES COMPRESSORS cont. 1.2 Compressor Flow Diagram During the operating cycle, compressed air flows from the compressor head through an aftercooler (a coil wrapped around the purge tank). The cooled air then passes through a coalescing filter that removes particulates. From the filter, the air streams flows up into the desiccant tank, through desiccant beads which extract moisture. Dry compressed air is now stored in the main air receiver tank, as well as the purge tank. A pressure switch monitors air pressure in the receiver and shuts off the compressor motor when pressure reaches 100 psi. It restarts the motor when pressure drops below 80 psi. During the purge cycle, the compressor motor shuts off and the solenoid valve opens, releasing a small burst of air. After this, a slow stream of air (stored in the purge tank) continues to flow for several seconds through the desiccant tank, coalescing filter, and out through the solenoid. This cycle removes moisture built up in the desiccant tank, as well as particulates from the coalesing filter. Using this table as a guide should result in a compressor installation which operates at approximately 30% duty cycle (the unit rests twice as long as it runs). This is vital as it optimizes the service life of the compressor. SUGGESTED APPLICATIONS 1-3 Users 4-7 Users 8-10 Users OL-3 OL-7 OL-10 IMPORTANT: User counts are based on the 2 cfm average for air operated handpieces and equipment. Some handpieces and equipment may have higher cfm requirements than the 2 cfm average. For the most accurate cfm requirements, check manufacturer specifications for each piece of equipment to be powered by the Matrx compressor. Operating the compressor in excess of 30% duty cycle will decrease the overall service life of the unit. 3

SECTION 4.0 OPERATION & MAINTENANCE 4.1 Operation Airmax OL-Series compressors are started by pressing the AIR switch on the remote control panel, or, for units without remote control panel, by switching on the main power circuit to the compressor. Note: Units with two compressor motors must have both motors operating simultaneously during normal operation. Always keep both service switches in the ON position. 4.2 Maintenance REPLACE AIR INTAKE FILTERS REPLACE COALESCING FILTER ELEMENT Replace the coalescing filter element annually, or more often in a dusty environment. Disconnect power from compressor before replacing. See figure 8. GASKET COALESCING FILTER ELEMENT Replace the air intake filters annually, or more often in a dusty environment. When installing the new filter, ensure that the filter is inserted fully into the rubber filter boot, then press into place in compressor head. See Figure 7. AIR INTAKE FILTERS (INSERT WITH HOLE FACING OUT AS SHOWN) Figure 8. Coalescing Filter FILTER BOOT Figure 7. Air Intake Filters 7

OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE cont. DRAIN WATER BUILDUP IN TANK Annually, open the receiver tank drain to remove any accumulation of water. Drain more frequently in very humid environments. Close the drain valve after water is purged. (See Figure 9). SERVICE DRAIN VALVE Figure 9. Service Drain Valve at Base of Tank TEST AIR SAFETY VALVE Annually, test the air safety valve by pulling the test ring of the air safety valve. The valve stem should be able to move freely. (See Figure 10). Warning: If the valve does not operate freely, the air safety valve may not protect the system from an overpressure condition, and must be replaced. AIR SAFETY VALVE CHECK MOISTURE INDICATOR Periodically check the moisture indicator (Figure 10). Under normal operating conditions the indicator is blue. If the indicator turns pink, there is a high level of moisture in the tank. See Troubleshooting, section 5.0. MOISTURE INDICATOR Figure 10. Manifold Block 8

SECTION 5.0 TROUBLESHOOTING Safety Warnings - Read Before Servicing WARNING: COMPRESSOR MOTORS ARE THERMALLY PROTECTED WITH AN AUTOMATIC RESET AND MAY START WITHOUT WARNING. CAUTION: On dual head units, never turn a compressor head on while the other head is running as the head will not start under back pressure. Allow the pressure switch to turn off the compressor at 100 PSI, or disconnect the compressor main power supply, and allow line pressure to completely relieve before turning remaining head on. Symptom Possible Cause Suggested Solution AirMax not run will Electrical problem Check main circuit breaker. Turn off fully then turn on firmly. If circuit breaker tripped, measure voltage at line side of pressure switch while compressor is running. The maximum voltage range that OL-3/7/10 may operate at is VAC. The voltage range for OL is VAC. Voltage outside of this range may result in failure to start, circuit breaker tripping, overheating and compressor damage. Install a buck or boost transformer as required. Check for excessive circuit lengths, as they can cause voltage drop during compressor operation. Check circuit breaker at top of each head. If activated (button out) wait approximately 15 minutes for head to cool. Press button in to reset. On OL-7 and OL-10: Isolate each head by turning off one motor at a time. If each compressor head runs with the other turned off, but do not run together, the voltage is too low. A boost transformer is required. Check fuse at compressor electrical control box. When reinstalling fuse, firmly press fuseholder in place. Check all electrical connections. If using remote control: Disconnect red and white wires at compressor electrical box from the remote control wires and twist together to bypass switch. If compressor runs, replace remote switch or inspect remote control wiring. If not using remote control: Make sure the red and white wires at the compressor electrical box are securely twisted together. Momentarily press in the center button of the contactor (inside the electrical box). If compressor runs: Check the transformer output at the yellow and brown wires. If voltage is not approximately 24 volts, replace transformer. If voltage is 24 volts, replace contactor. Do not jam contactor button. Overheating problem. Thermal protectors are activated. See safety warnings above Check that installation site is properly vented and, if necessary, air conditioned to prevent ambient temperature from exceeding 104 F/40 C. Check if air intake filters are clogged. Verify that the compressor is properly sized for the number of users at the installation site (see Section 2.2). Check for leaks within compressor and piping system causing compressor to overcycle. If a sound cover is installed, check for cooling fan operation. -If fans are operating, check that fan openings are not blocked. -If fans are not operating, check that fan wire harness is connected to compressor electrical box. If so, replace fans. Do not reinstall top panel until fans are operational. Allow approximately 15 minutes for head(s) to cool and thermal protectors to reset. 9

TROUBLESHOOTING cont. Symptom Possible Cause Suggested Solution Compressor head does not start, makes humming noise One compressor head does not start on dual unit Compressor cycles with no air being used Compressor runs but will not pressurize to 100 psi Solenoid purge valve does not discharge air when compressor shuts off Moisture indicator is pink or Water in handpieces Start capacitor failure Motor switch failure or motor circuit breaker trip Receiver tank check valve leaking Leak in compressor or piping system Clogged air intake filters Solenoid purge valve is not closed when compressor is running Solenoid valve port or coalescing filter collection bowl port clogged Solenoid valve malfunction; stuck in closed position Drying system not operating properly Desiccant contaminated Compressor is over cycled, preventing drying system from regenerating properly Replace start capacitor. Check that motor switch is in the ON position Check motor switch. Cycle off and on (for dual head units, make sure other head is off during this test - see caution at head of Troubleshooting section). Check circuit breaker at top of head. If activated (button out) wait approximately 15 minutes for head to cool. Press button in to reset. Clean or replace check valve. CAUTION: Before disassembling or removing check valve, close receiver tank outlet valve and open tank drain valve to relieve compressor air pressure. Check for leaks by allowing the compressor to reach 100 psi and shut down. Close the receiver tank outlet valve to isolate compressor from piping system. Do not use any air from piping system for 1 hour. If the pressure gauge continues to drop while outlet valve is closed, the leak is within the compressor. If the pressure gauge maintains the same reading, but drops after opening the outlet valve, the leak is in the piping system. NOTE: The pressure gauge drops a few psi each time the compressor turns off at 100 psi. Replace filters per section 4.2. Check wire connections to solenoid purge valve. Replace solenoid valve. NOTE: The solenoid purge valve is normally open (closed when the compressor runs). Clean ports. Check all wiring connections to solenoid valve. Replace solenoid valve. Check flow indicator on top of coalescing filter. If green while compressor is running, the filter element is OK. If red while compressor is running, the filter is saturated or deteriorated and must be replaced. After replacing, run unit for a few days. If water is still present, replace desiccant tank. Replace desiccant tank. Check for leaks within compressor and piping system causing compressor to overcycle. Compressor is undersized (see Unit Selection Guide, Section 2.2). Upgrade to larger compressor. 10
