3 Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1

4 Description of the School Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves? Saddle Campus opened its doors in August The campus is located in the west side of the Las Vegas valley. Las Vegas has gone through some harsh economic times which has had an impact on the social economic state of the city. According to Brookings Mountain West's newest information none of the key economic indicators have returned to pre-recession levels. Recovery, however, seems to be steady and broad based, without the hyper-growth. Las Vegas is very connected to consumer economy, which makes us very vulnerable to outside forces. The Las Vegas valley has experienced tremendous growth, in 1990 the population was 741,452 growing to the present day 2 million figure. The valley has also had a huge population influx with minorities becoming a major representation factor. is an arts integration school. Arts integration is instruction which integrates content and skills from the arts-dance, music, theater, and visual arts with other content and skills of an art form within those of co-curriculum subjects. Saddle Campus currently has 876 students in grades K-8. We also have 32 pre-k students that attend our private program. The student body is composed of 61% Caucasian, 14% Hispanic, 9.5% Asian, 5% African American, 7.47% Mixed Race, 1.4% Pacific Islander, and.73% Native American. Currently 72 students qualify for free and reduced cost lunch. In addition to providing our students with a strong arts integrated academic education, provides a wide list of after school enrichment programs ranging from Student Government, NJHS, to varied GATE classes which include Robotics, etc. We not only work with our students, but also make sure that all of our parents and community members are informed of and can provide continuous contributions to the progress of our school mission and happenings at. There is continuous communication disseminated through traditional phone call and notifications, Facebook, and school and classroom Web sites. Doral Academy Nevada has a very active PTSO. This group of parents are involved in a wide range of activities, which include extracurricular and arts integration enhancement and fundraising for many needed items for our school. Parents are asked to volunteer 30 hours per school year. Parents can be seen reading to students in classrooms, helping with integrated projects, etc. Prior to Doral Academy Saddle Campus opening, a series of meetings was conducted to inform our parents of the mission and vision of our school. Because of the recent opening of the Doral Academy Cactus Campus additional meetings for parents at both schools were conducted again in the spring. Curriculum based meetings and Open Houses were held during the school year and additional parent meetings, which will share student achievement data are currently being planned for January. Doral Academy Nevada students are often seen assisting the community. Our elementary choir was asked to perform at the Philharmonic fundraiser event and this summer at the National Charter School Conference. Our upper school students were asked to share their talents at the St. Jude fundraising dinner. Page 2

Doral Guiding Principles ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE INTELLECTUAL COMMUNITY APPRECIATION OF THE ARTS COLLABORATION ENGAGEMENT CREATIVE EXPRESSION INSPIRATION The Mission of is dedicated to providing an enhanced educational experience. We will develop outstanding student achievement with focus on each child being well-rounded in all parts of education. Students will be prepared in an academically challenging and personally meaningful learning environment with an emphasis on arts integration, increasing literacy, cognitive, and social development. A collaborative effort including students, teachers, parents, and staff will be devoted to establishing, achieving, and celebrating individual goals for each child at Doral Academy. Our vision and the guiding principles establish goals for the student population. The mission is the vision set in motion. Upper School students are assigned seven credits per year as the maximum course load. The students participate in a two period block for English Language Arts. Annual credit classes are year-long and semester courses are half of the year. Upper School Math Advanced Placement courses are offered which include both accelerated courses and high school credit courses in Algebra. Additionally, students can obtain high school credit in Spanish/Foreign Language. Each grade level at Elementary School provides core instruction in both Reading and Math, however, they also provide both enrichment and remediation instruction to further meet the academic needs of our students. After school GATE classes are also offered to our families. Page 3

6 Elementary School was recently identified as a Five Star School by the Nevada Department of Education. The highest ranking possible. This is a testament to our students' academic performance, and the realization of our vision and mission statements. Because of our school's performance and achievement we currently have an extensive waiting list. has spent time analyzing our current test data. Through this analysis we have identified two academic goals for the school year. - Expand and further expose the utilization of Literary and Expository Text. - Strengthen our Math Core by focusing on proper pacing and implement strategies and instruction that utilizes Measurement, Algebra, and Functions. Throughout the school year the administrative team meets to re-assess goals and reflect on how well we were able to making academic student growth. At we have a system of performance assessments in place. We utilize this data to create a Literacy and Math Data Board. This data assists us in the identification of remediation and enrichment groups to ensure continuous monitoring of student growth. Assessment are re-administered in the middle of the year and at the end of the year. Standardized tests are administered at the end of the school year. The new Smarter Balance assessment will be added this school year and future interim assessments will be forthcoming. Additional training on implementation, interpretation and how to further utilize these assessment to improve instruction will be needed. Classroom teachers also provide students with core formative and summative assessment. The goal is to measure learning gains resulting from meaningful classroom instruction. Our faculty is actively engaged in the utilization of data from assessments to better address the diverse needs of their students. During the school year and continuing to the present, numerous professional development activities have been dedicated to better utilize data gathered from assessments. The Baseline and Interim assessments provide our teachers with the areas of strengths and weaknesses of each individual student. Based on the tendencies within their classrooms our teachers create lesson plans that meet the diverse needs of our students. This data is required to be kept in the teachers' professional binder as a reflection tool and is inspected regularly during classroom observations. strives to provide the students with varied student support programs and services. provides a variety of sports in which students are encouraged to achieve excellence both on and off the field. Students at Doral can also choose from a variety of clubs and activities that are suited to meet their unique interests. Our counselor is always eager to assist students academically and socially. Our counselor provides regular class instruction to both our elementary and upper school students via Advocacy and classroom visits which focus on various "Life Skills" and the many social issues that face the youth of today. Should the student have a situation that cannot be adequately addressed, access to our school psychologist is available. We also provide multiple provisions to help support our students' academic needs in both advancement and/or remediation. Students scoring poorly on their state assessment in Reading or Math are assigned to an Intensive Reading or Mathematics Intervention course in order to receive the necessary skills to achieve success. Our Special Education teachers ensure that students with special needs as well as their teachers are given the resources necessary to succeed. Page 4

7 Parental and community involvement at is essential. Our parents are offered a variety of trainings and meeting opportunities such as various curriculum nights, Open House, as well as conference opportunities. Our Web site, is a repository of information about the happenings of the school. Community involvement is important at Doral and many of our student organizations regularly partner-up with our school. These partners include, however, are not limited to The John F. Kennedy Center, The Smith Center for the Performing Arts, Walls 360, and local and community artists. Page 5

Additionally, describe areas for improvement that the school is striving to achieve in the next three years. Over the past year, Elementary School was identified as a five star school. A new Doral Academy was opened in the Mountain's Edge area. Turf was installed at the Doral Saddle Campus and plans are under way for a large awning and a kiln area, which will be installed soon. Through the assistance of our Florida affiliates, we had the ability to hire a half time counselor at both campuses. Through our general budget, we also allocated funding for a half time teacher coach at both campuses to increase our teacher coaching support. Because of increased numbers we were also able to hire an enrichment and remediation specialist and a lead teacher to support with our arts integration focus and support new teachers. During the school year Saddle Campus hosted a "Community Open House" where both Andre Agassi and Governor Sandoval attended. One of the major challenges that we faced this year at Saddle Campus was a change in our student population. We opened our doors in 2013 with close to 800 students and close to half of those students moved to the new Doral Academy Cactus Campus in the Mountain's Edge area for the school year. The Saddle campus also expanded to include 8th grade for the school year. The Assistant Principal who assisted with the opening of the Saddle Campus became the Principal of the new campus, and a new Assistant Principal was selected for the Saddle Campus. A group of Saddle Campus teachers also moved to the new campus as a leadership team to assist with the opening. This did create some interesting challenges with approximately half of our students and parents being new, combined with several new teachers to the building. faces challenges in the utilization of technology. With more and more of education utilizing technology, additional support is needed in tech assistance, more computers, software, etc. Another challenge we have encountered during the last year is the transition into the new curriculum standards. Being that this transition is new across the state, it's been difficult to access information and instructional resources in order to guide teachers to the systematic alignment of this implementation. From 2013 to present, has continued to grow and continues to have an extensive student waiting list. Although it is always a challenge to keep productivity and academic success high in a school, it is a great challenge to maintain the same expected results of the previous years with more students. Administration challenges all teachers and staff with a strong vision, while also holding them accountable to maintain performance which is the top priority for the school. Page 6
