2 Christmas food The "Holy Supper in Russia Traditionally, the "Holy Supper" consists of 12 different foods, symbolic of the 12 Apostles. 1) Mushroom soup with zaprashka or Sauerkraut 2) 2) Lenten bread ("pagach") 3) Grated garlic 4) Bowl of honey 5) Baked cod 6) Fresh Apricots, Oranges, Figs and Dates 7) Nuts 8) Kidney beans seasoned with shredded potatoes, garlic, salt,pepper 9) Peas 10) Parsley Potatoes 11) Bobal'ki (small biscuits combined with sauerkraut or poppyseed with honey) 12) Red Wine

3 Christmas food The "Holy Supper in Britain In Britain Christmas dinner usually consists of roast turkey, pork; roast potatoes; vegetables (usually boiled or steamed), particularly brussels sprouts; stuffing; chipolatas or pigs in blankets; cranberry sauce; with dessert of Christmas pudding (or plum pudding) and brandy butter.

4 The custom of giving gifts to relatives and friends on a special day in winter probably began in ancient Rome and northern Europe. In these regions, people gave each other small presents as part of their year-end celebrations. Gift giving

5 Symbols of Christmas Christmas Stocking The legend says, a kindly nobleman grew despondent over the death of his wife and squandered his fortune. This left his three young daughters without dowries. St. Nicholas rode his horse by the nobleman's house and threw gold coins down the chimney where they fell into the stockings the young women had hung by the fireplace to dry.

6 Symbols of Christmas Santa Claus The origin of Santa Claus begins in the 4 th century With Saint Nicholas. St. Nicholas was a generous man, particularly devoted to children. St. Nicholas became the patron saint of Russia, where he was known by his red cape, flowing white beard, and bishop's mitre.

7 Symbols of Christmas Father Frost (Ded Moroz) Due to the suppression of religion during the Soviet regime, St. Nicholas was replaced by Ded Moroz or Grandfather Frost, the Russian Spirit of Winter who brought gifts on New Year's. He is accompanied by Snyegurochka, the Snowmaiden, who helps distribute the gifts.

8 Symbols of Christmas Christmas Tree The Christmas Tree was brought to England by Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert from his native Germany. The Christmas tree in Russwia (Yolka) was banned during the Soviet era.to keep the custom alive, people decorated New Year's trees. The custom of decorating Christmas trees was introduced to Russia by Peter the Great, after he visited Europe during the 1700's.

9 Symbols of Christmas Missletoe Boughs of holly, believed to have magical powers since they remained green through the harsh winter, were often placed over the doors of homes to drive evil away. The ancient Celtics believed mistletoe to have magical powers and used it as an antidote for poison. It was also a symbol of peace, and it is said that among Romans, enemies who met under mistletoe would lay down their weapons. Holy, ivy and greenery

10 Christmas Cards A Christmas card began in England when Sir Henry Cole Christmas card, the first director of Victoria and Albert Museum, found himself too busy in the Christmas season of 1843 to compose individual Christmas greetings for his friends. He commissioned artist John Calcott Horsley for the illustration. The card was inscribed with the message "A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You
