5 Ensuring Access to Justice I am going to tell everyone I know about In 2011, KCBF s Pro Bono Services programs worked with 1,300 volunteer your program. Thank attorneys, paralegals, students, and community members to assist 10,608 you for helping me be economically disadvantaged clients in King County with 41,802 hours worth me again. Pro Bono Services client Family Law Family Law includes the Family Law Mentor Program, the Kinship Care Solutions Program and the Self Help-Plus Program. These programs assist clients with the following legal issues: direct representation for contested divorces where domestic violence is present and/or children are at risk, third-party non-parental custody cases, and noncontested divorces or parenting plans. Housing Justice Project The Housing Justice Project (HJP) provides free legal help to eligible low-income tenants facing eviction. This clinic meets daily at the King County Superior Courthouse in downtown Seattle and at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent. HJP also offers an evening clinic in Seattle at the King County Superior Courthouse. Community Services Community Services includes the Neighborhood Legal Clinics (NLC), Homeless Clinics, and Volunteer Legal Services (VLS). NLC offers individuals a free half-hour consultation with an attorney. Attorneys determine whether the client has a legal problem, suggest possible options, and provide appropriate referrals. At the Homeless Clinics, volunteer attorneys advise shelter residents on their legal problems and may provide on-going representation when needed. VLS offers eligible clients direct on-going representation. VLS takes cases in Chapter 7 bankruptcy, vacating criminal records, Social Security overpayments, wills and estate planning, housing, and debt defense.

6 Increasing Diversity in the Legal Profession Future of the Law Institute Future of the Law Institute (FLI) is a year-long program for minority and economically disadvantaged high school students interested in learning more about a career in the law. FLI provides students with substantive legal workshops, career counseling, a mock trial, a courthouse tour, and opportunities to meet with legal professionals. Students are eligible for scholarships when they continue on to higher education. KCBF Minority Law Student Scholarships KCBF is one of the largest providers of minority law student scholarships in Washington. In , KCBF distributed $125,000 to the University of Washington and Seattle University law schools for this purpose. Since this program began in 1970, over 700 scholarships have been awarded and over half of the scholarship recipients still practice in Washington. Building a Book of Business Based on the premise that those minority attorneys who are successful within law firms are more likely to stay, this program helps minority associates in private practice improve their chances for success. In a closeddoor seminar, successful minority lawyers instruct participants how to effectively market themselves and acquire new clients for their firms.
