1 Hino City Disaster Prevention Map The Tachikawa Fault Zone The Tachikawa Fault Zone starts in Hanno City in Saitama Prefecture and passes through Ome City and Tachikawa City in Tokyo before ending in Fuchu City, Tokyo. It is comprised of the Naguri Fault and Tachikawa Fault. It is roughly 33 kilometers long and runs in a generally northwest-southeast direction. A survey conducted by the government s Headquarters for Earthquake Research Promotion estimated that the probability that a 7.4-magnitude earthquake will occur in the fault zone within 30 years of 2013 is between 0.5 and 2%. The Hino City Regional Disaster Prevention Plan that was revised in March 2013 envisions an earthquake in the Tachikawa Fault Zone that will cause most of its greatest damage in Hino City. The earthquake is assumed to have an intensity of 6 Upper on the Japanese seismic intensity scale throughout most of Hino City and 7 in some areas. 2 Preparing your home for disasters Minimizing damage takes daily readiness and awareness. Be prepared for emergencies. Check the safety of your home. Make sure your home is earthquake-resistant. Check the safety of each room. Secure furniture and electronic appliances that could fall over. Install window film that prevents flying glass. Have slippers, sports shoes, cotton work gloves, and other such items ready nearby. Always keep entrances tidy. Make sure you know how to evacuate and communicate with family members. Decide on a method of communication and gathering place for your family beforehand. Confirm evacuation routes. Check the locations of the nearest evacuation shelter and area. Stock up on emergency supplies. Keep enough food and water to last at least three days. If you take medicine to treat a condition or disease, keep a stock of it on hand. 英語 -2

3 The rotating stock method The rotating stock method is a way of maintaining a stock of emergency supplies. It involves purchasing a larger than normal amount of ordinarily consumed food items and storing them, and then consuming the oldest items in order, thereby leaving newer items available for emergencies. Putting the method to use Purchase a larger-than-usual amount of preservable food items (about double your usual amount). Consume the items in order from the oldest. When half of the supply is consumed, purchase only the amount of new items needed to replace the consumed amount. This method can be used for more than just food. It can also be applied when purchasing toilet paper, portable gas stove cylinders, and other household supplies. Benefits Eating the same foods you usually eat even during an emergency can bring a sense of routine and security. Because you re always replacing items as you consume them, there is no need to worry about their being past their best by date. 4 Things to take with you in an emergency Prepare emergency items that you can take with you if you need to evacuate. Routinely check these items, and place them in a rucksack or other bag that can be grabbed quickly. 5 What to do if an earthquake occurs First, protect yourself. If you feel an earthquake, get under a sturdy table or take refuge in a place where items won t fall, tip over, or move around. Watch for danger until the shaking stops. Watch out for fallen furniture or glass fragments inside the room. Do not rush outside due to the danger of falling bricks, glass, signboards, or other objects. If you are using a flame, unhurriedly check the source of the flame after the shaking has stopped. If a fire has broken out, extinguish it calmly. Secure an exit by opening a window or door. If you are outside when the earthquake strikes, watch out for things that could fall over, such as concrete-block walls, gateposts, and vending machines. Evacuate on foot. Walk to the evacuation area. Do not use your car, as emergency vehicles will have priority on the roads. Calmly gather reliable information. Establish a volunteer disaster-prevention organization Voluntary disaster-prevention organizations are groups in which members of the community take the initiative in conducting disaster-prevention activities. The efforts of Hino residents made through such organizations play a vital role in keeping damage to a minimum. Hino City supplies disaster-prevention materials and equipment for use in emergencies to new organizations that begin operating within the community covered by their neighborhood association.
