Tehran and the challenges of a metropolis Dr. Elham Amini Assistant Professor Islamic Azad University of Pardis

In the name of God

Tehran- the capital of Iran- is one of the 10 largest cities in the world with more than 8 million people residents, 600 square kilometers wide. It is a very crowded and highly modern city.

Tehran stands as the beating heart of the country s economy, culture and education.

with a series of problems: A good quality of life, access to health facilities, traffic, travel facilities, air pollution, etc. Tehran traffic problem is so complicated that no one solution can not even imagine it.

Therefore it is not surprising that this very happening city suffers from the side-effects of urban and industrial modernization such as unemployment, inflation, traffic congestion, air and sound pollution, all of which could easily and in the least result in serious health issues, stress and its minor and major consequences.

Every day a significant number of vehicles entering the city without a car entering the highway enough to spread.

In Tehran, almost everyone owns a car or is an somehow aspirant car owner.

The authorities are always on look for strategies to reduce the city s traffic by issuing timely yet strict driving and traffic rules, improvement of public means of transportation and increasing the awareness of the citizens in general about the dangers of traffic congestion, air pollution and safety for pedestrians and passengers alike.

Air pollution in the city of mountains Surrounded by a chain of mountains in the North, Tehran is a city of city of many seasons and reasons. the mountains of Tehran also play a role in its pollution.

traffic congestion due to use of private cars and taxis, the industries located on the outskirts of this industrial city contribute majorly to the contamination of the air.

transportation (BRT) is one of Transportatio n convenient public transportation in Tehran.

Tehran Metro, the city s underground heart Compared with industrial cities of the world, Tehran s Metro is indeed a new metropolitan phenomenon; nevertheless one could say that it has been beautifully integrated into the city s everyday life of transportation.

of the world and well known for its traffic jams which make commute across the city a challenge in the early hours of morning and evening, that being the rush hours.

1- Although Tehran has a capacity for 700,000 cars, there are currently more than 3 million cars on the streets of the capital. Facts

Facts 2- As one of the cleanest and most convenient metro systems, Tehran has the longest metro line in the Middle East and currently the fourth longest in Asia.

3-Buses have Facts been local means of transportation in the city since the early 1920 s but the trolley buses (electric bus) came into the scene in 1992 and to this day they operate across five routes.

Facts 5)Women are not legally permitted to ride motorcycles but then even young men who ride bikes are not very popular in the eyes of the public, perhaps because bikes are usually associated with delivery jobs and are notoriously responsible for most accidents. Also in a city like Tehran where almost everyone owns a car, riding a bike seems superfluous.

citizens should made less use of their own car because population in Tehran is very dense and this makes urban planning difficult. Under these conditions, development of transportation network cannot be simply a solution, but that network should be managed more efficiently and take advantage of such modalities as subway and BRT lines which can carry a large amount of passengers. many streets in Tehran have been occupied by parked cars and this has further restricted traffic spaces. use of personal cars in Tehran is much more than it should be and it is strange that every person thinks that they should use their own cars when moving in the city. in other countries, many people have cars, but they give priority to public transportation. bicycle has been taken very seriously in big cities of the world because it has had good effect in reducing air pollution and traffic jams.

I recommend Tehran traffic officials to give priority to building special lines for bicycles.

The great potential of natural and unnatural events in many countries like Iran along with the strategic role of transportation networks in a country s economic, disaster management in Iran s transportation network, especially in its capital, Tehran, has a great importance. Also transportation networks play an important role in various stages of response to disasters, such as evacuation, search and rescue, and reconstruction missions. Hence, special attention must be paid to transportation networks in any disaster management system. Reliability measures are critical in judging the performance of a transportation system and it is very important to evaluate the performance of the network after disaster under the most probable scenarios in planning stages before disaster. In this paper, the causes of degrading link capacities will be discussed and we will propose a new algorithm for computing the reliability of Tehran s transportation network during the occurrence of an earthquake. In other words, we will present an approach for optimizing disaster management of transportation networks.

simplified and habits are changing to follow a transport system that is no longer centred on the car. Mr Ghalibaf thus stresses the idea of putting the human at the heart of transport strategies. Considerable time savings have been made through the new transport networks; similarly, there has been a significant reduction in traffic jams. The latter had become a genuine threat to public health, with catastrophic air pollution during the busiest times. This concern was partly behind the city s recent proactivity
