2 Curriculum Standard Two: The student will observe informal productions, theatrical productions, films, and electronic media and respond to them, using the vocabulary and language of the theatre. 1. The student will respond to works in technical theatre using appropriate vocabulary. A. Can the student incorporate technical vocabulary and language of the theatre in discussions and written analysis of theatrical works as viewed through the eyes of the technician/designer? The student will define and give examples of theatrical conventions (time, setting, visual elements and auditory elements). The student will analyze and describe the interdependence of all theatrical elements. 2

3 Curriculum Standard Three: The student will develop knowledge and skills in acting and directing through his/her own experience and imagination, as well as through his/her research of literature and history. 1. The student will develop skills in design and technical theatre production. A. Can the student demonstrate skills and knowledge of the various activities of the actor, director, and technical artists and the collaborative process that occurs among them? The student will demonstrate various ways of staging. The student will plan visual and aural elements for scripted scenes. The student will organize rehearsals for scripted scenes. The student will develop multiple interpretations and visual and aural production choices for scripts and production ideas. The student will justify selections of text, interpretations, and visual and aural artistic choices (e.g., situation, action, direction, design). The student will communicate directorial choices for scripted scenes. 3

4 Curriculum Standard Four: The student will explore the elements and technology of theatrical production through varied media. 1. The student will apply design, directing, and theatre production concepts and skills. A. Can the student recognize and/or develop designs that use visual elements and principles and aural qualities? B. Can the student design and produce by conceptualizing and realizing artistic interpretations for informal or formal productions? The student will demonstrate an understanding of the basic physical and chemical properties of the technical aspects of theatre (e.g., light, color, electricity, paint, makeup). The student will demonstrate an understanding of production requirements for a variety of dramatic texts. The student will develop designs that use visual and aural elements to convey environments (e.g., place, time, atmosphere/mood) that clearly support the text. The student will safely apply technical knowledge and skills to create and/or operate functional scenery, properties, lighting, sound, costumes, makeup, and publicity. The student will define the director s role as a unifying force, problem-solver, interpreter of script, and collaborator. 4

5 The student will define the director s responsibility to the author s intent, script, actors, designers, technicians, and the audience. The student will concentrate in one or more areas of technical theatre production, (lighting, sound, design, publicity, costumes, makeup, management) demonstrating responsibility, artistic discipline, and creative problem solving. C. Can the student participate in a theatrical experience? The student will develop and practice stage-craft skills. The student will create functional scenery, properties, lighting, sound, costumes, or makeup. The student will concentrate in one or more areas of technical theatre production, (lighting, sound, design, publicity, costumes, makeup, management) demonstrating responsibility, artistic discipline, and creative problem solving. 5

7 Curriculum Standard Six: The student will research relationships between theatre, history, and culture. 1. The student will realize relationships exist between theatre, history, and culture. A. Can the student demonstrate an understanding that theatre and those who work in all aspects of theatre reflect and influence culture? The student will define selected theatrical styles and genres. The student will recognize how culture and history affect the content and production of a dramatic performance. The student will relate historical and cultural influences on theatre and analyze the roles of live theatre, film, television, and electronic media in American society. 7

8 Curriculum Standard Seven: The student will investigate major themes and historical periods and styles of theatre in different cultures. 1. The student will recognize major themes and historical periods and styles of theatre in different cultures. A. Can the student demonstrate an understanding of major performing arts traditions and styles in a variety of times and places? The student will demonstrate an understanding of the reasons for personal and audience reactions to theater from various cultures and time periods (e.g., French farce, Greek tragedy, and Japanese Noh). 8

9 Curriculum Standard Eight: The student will develop and use criteria for judging and evaluating informal productions, formal productions, films, and electronic media. 1. The student will understand that specific criteria can be developed and used to assess the qualities and merits of works in theatre. A. Can the student develop and use criteria to evaluate works in theatre? The student will state and justify his/her aesthetic criteria and apply it to a live theatre production using appropriate theater terminology. The student will use an agreed-upon criteria to evaluate his/her own collaborative efforts an artistic choices in informed and formal productions. 9
