2 The instrumental study in piano is divided into two segments: the Bachelor (Bakkelaureat) and the Masters (Magisterstudium). In addition, after successful completion of the Masters, a post graduate study in piano is possible. Each segment represents a separate unity. Bachelor Degree For entrance into the Bachelor program it is necessary to pass an entrance examination (A). At the end of two semesters the student must pass an intermediate examination (B) and, after 8 semesters, a final examination (C). The student may extend his study for no longer than two semesters before completing the final examination. Masters Degree There are five options for the Masters program: 1. Emphasis in performance 2. Emphasis in pedagogy 3. Emphasis in chamber music/ vocal accompaniment 4. Emphasis in coaching for music theatre (Korrepetition) 5. Emphasis in fortepiano The first requirement for any of these options is the successful completion of the Bachelor program. The decision as to whether or not the student may continue with 1 or 2 is made by the piano jury at the time of the final examination. For options 3, 4, and 5, the student must pass a supplementary examination in one of those areas of study (D, E, F). Further study at the masters level is possible in only one of the five areas. A final examination (G, H, I, J, K) takes place after four semesters, with a possible extension of two additional semesters. Entrance into the Bachelor program Candidates must prepare program (A) At the time of the audition, the jury will make a selection of approximately 15 minutes. Selected candidates will be required to play a second time from the same program. Those selected at the second audition must complete a theory examination and, for non native speakers, a German test. Final acceptance is determined after all examinations have been completed. Entrance into the Masters program (For candidates coming from other institutions) A prerequisite for the Masters study is the recognition by the Mozarteum of a Bachelor Degree from another University or institution. Candidates must prepare (A). Upon receiving recognition of their Bachelor Diploma, candidates will continue to the supplementary examination. For emphasis in solo performance and for pedagogy, they must prepare (C). For the other fields of study they must prepare (D, E, or F,) respectively. Candidates will perform the selections of the jury for approximately 30 minutes. Post Graduate Study Upon completion of the Masters program, it is possible to pursue post graduate study in piano for two semesters, with a possible extension of two additional semesters. All post graduate study must be approved by the piano department and by the Rektor. No final examinations are required for this study.

Chamber music program A classical work A romantic work One Lied from Schubert, Wolf and Strauss (a total of three Lieder) For candidates who are unable to provide their own partners, the following works will be provided by the school: Wolf: Mozart: Trio KV 502 Brahms: Cello sonata in e-minor Schubert: Suleika 1 and 2 Ich hab in Penna einen Liebsten wohnen Strauss: Allerseelen All songs to be performed in the high keys. 4 F Supplementary Examination for fortepiano A work of CPE Bach A sonata of Haydn or Mozart One of the following Beethoven sonata: Op. 54, Op.78, or Op. 90 A work of the early romantic A chamber music work of ones own choice G Final examination for the Masters Diploma Repertoire: 4 etudes, at least two from Chopin Three preludes and fugues, at least one from the WTK, or A large work of Bach and a polyphonic work of any style A major work of Mozart Two major works of Beethoven from different periods, at least one of which a sonata A major romantic work Three major works composed after 1890, one of which composed after 1950 A concerto by Mozart or Beethoven A romantic, impressionist or modern concerto H Final examination for the Masters Diploma with emphasis in pedagogy 2 virtuoso etudes, at least one of which must be from Chopin A major work of Bach or a prelude and fugue (WTK) and three Scarlatti sonatas A difficult sonata of Beethoven A major romantic work; cycles must be presented in their entirety An impressionist work or a work composed before 1950 A work composed after 1950 A representative work of chamber music (approx. level of difficulty: Beethoven Trio Op. 97, Brahms violin sonata in G-major) Except for the chamber music works and the work composed after 1950, all works must be performed by memory. The works in the categories Baroque, Classic, Romantic, Impressionist, or New Music can be replaced by a concerto of the same style. The Beethoven sonata can only be replaced by a Beethoven concerto. I Final examination for the Masters Diploma in Chamber Music/Vocal Accompaniment A solo work lasting a minimum of five minutes. This can be a movement or several movements from a larger work A baroque chamber music work 2 major chamber music works (preferably with different ensembles), one of them from Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven, the other from Schubert A major chamber music work of the romantic period (not Schubert) A chamber music work composed after 1890 A chamber music work composed after 1950 A group of songs or Lieder from three different periods lasting approximately 30 minutes
