1 Chapter 7: Frederikssundsvej 7.1 Case Context and Existing Situation Case Study Area and Character Sections Placement and direction of photos see Appendix 1, where also house numbers and street names are shown. The street case includes a 2.88 km section of Frederikssundsvej from Islevhusvej in west to Bellhøjvej in east, see map below. The case study area is split into three character sections. Map of case study area. (North is up.) Character section 1 is 920 metres long and goes from Islevhusvej to Åkandevej and includes the junction at Islevhusvej. 2-4 floors housing blocks and houses with relatively few shops and businesses dominate the southern side. A genuine mix of industrial and office buildings and blocks and houses of 1-4 floors dominate the northern side. Most buildings are from There are many shops on the northern side from Islevhusvej to Kobbelvænget. Section 1 has one traffic lane in each direction. The structure of the street network is average-grained. Character section 1 (FS#1). Character section 2 (FS#2). Character section 3 (FS#3). Section 2 is 1,410 metres long and includes the end-junctions at Åkandevej and Degnemose Allé. The section is dominated by 4-5 floors blocks from many with shops in ground floor on Page 122

2 both sides of the street. There is one traffic lane in each direction, however, two lanes in each direction on and near the square Brønshøj Torv. The street network is fine-grained. Section 3 is 550 metres and goes from Degnemose Allé to Bellahøjvej and includes the junction at Bellahøjvej. Most buildings are from around floors housing blocks and a park dominate the northern side, whereas tall 9-13 floors tower blocks and a church dominate the southern side. There are two traffic lanes in each direction and the street network is fine-grained. The case study area represent the statistical area for most of the performance indicators, whereas only conditions on Frederikssundsvej has been registered regarding built form, traffic control etc Location Appendix 2 shows the location of Frederikssundsvej and the other five street cases in the arterial street/road network in the Municipality of Copenhagen. Frederikssundsvej starts at Nørrebrogade in east and ends about 35 km later at Frederikssund. Hillerød Motorway and Hareskovvej partly runs parallel to Frederikssundsvej and they meet at Bellahøj. Frederikssundsvej is the prime shopping street of Brønshøj and Husum districts, but also a medium sized radial arterial serving through traffic to the central districts of Copenhagen. Train services are located 0.5 to 2 km from Frederikssundsvej depending on where you are. Bus and rail network. Bus lines 5A (18) and 350S (11) runs all the way on Frederikssundsvej with 903 trips on weekdays. Bus line 22 (3) do 106 trips on weekdays partly on section 1 from Islevhusvej to Husumvej. Bus line 2A (14) runs partly on section 2 from Åkandevej to Brønshøj Torv with 496 trips on weekdays. Four bus lines 28 (6), 166 (3), 168E (3) and 200S (6) cross Frederikssundsvej at Husum Torv (Islevhusvej) and another four bus lines 8 (5), 67 (2), 68 (3), 250S (6) cross Frederikssundsvej at Bellahøj. The small number in brackets shows the number of trips in rush hours on weekdays in one direction. Frederikssundsvej is one of Denmarks oldest existing roads. Originally it started at the city walls of Copenhagen s northern gate and ended after a daytrip on horse at the harbour in Frederikssund. However, passing through the villages Husum and Brønshøj, which now are the districts Page 123

3 surrounding our part of Frederikssundsvej. The urban development in these districts started around 1900, but most of the buildings are built after the Second World War. About a fourth of the homes are villas and detached houses, but an extraordinary high 45 per cent of the homes are social housing. However, regarding socio-economic figures these two districts are very close to average of Copenhagen, actually income is about 2 per cent higher than average. Map shows doorways, inactive and illuminated buildings along character section 1. Character section 1: The building height varies between 1 to 5 floors or about 5 to 18 metres. Most buildings are of 3-4 floors. The section is a mix of buildings from mostly from 1950s and 1990s. Page 124

4 The shadows on the aerial photos on page 127 give you an impression of heights of individual buildings. Cross sections including building floors and heights are also shown on page 127. The spacing of buildings is rather big due to gardens, driveways, etc. 210 metres of building line on the north side and 255 metres on the south side are without buildings. The rest is side streets and buildings, i.e. giving a ratio of frontage to space between frontages of no more than 2-3. A few relatively small buildings are inactive. The sunny north side of the street appears more active than the south side due to more open doorways and more illumination, but there are more doorways to homes on the south side. Maintenance of buildings is good except a couple of detached houses in the west. The street section has a medium level of transparency. Spacing between buildings is often green (FS#4). Shops in north, homes in south (FS#5). Character section 2: The building height varies between 1 to 5.5 floors or about 3 to 20 metres. Most buildings are of 3-5 floors with shops in ground floor and flats in upper floors and from on both sides of the street. Spacing of buildings is smaller than on section 1 and the ratio of frontage to space between frontages of is about 4. Map shows doorways, inactive and illuminated buildings in character section 2. Many small buildings are inactive. But activity and transparency level is high and about the same on both sides. There are no historical buildings. The maintenance of buildings appears good. Architecture is uniform with few details. Page 125

5 A strange mix of 1930s relatively small buildings and 1950s large structures (FS#6, FS#7). Character section 3: The building height varies between 1 to 11 floors or about 4 to 35 metres. The street is a mix of everything; detached houses, 3-5 floors buildings blocks, a park and 9-11 floors towers. The spacing of buildings is big on both sides with a ratio of frontage to space between frontages of 1. Two buildings appear inactive. Activity and transparency level are medium and almost the same on both sides. Maintenance of buildings is good except one of the inactive buildings, which probably should be demolished. The street width between the edges of the footways, i.e. the formal public space, varies considerably especially on section 1 and 3. However, on average there is not much differences between the three sections, where section 2 is the narrowest and section 3 the widest. This wider space is used to more traffic lanes, which can be seen by comparing cross sections on the figure above. The function of the median is predominantly to aid crossing pedestrians and separate the opposing traffic directions. The median is marked with wide 30 cm white continuous lines and red asphalt, and several median islands reduce overtaking, etc. Page 127
