1 Careers Wales Mid Glamorgan & Powys CAREERS WALES MID GLAMORGAN & POWYS PUPIL DESTINATION REPORT 2010 / 2011 A summary of the destinations of pupils from Years 11, 12 and 13 as collected on October 31st 2011 Bridgend Unitary Authority

2 Careers Wales Mid Glamorgan & Powys Bridgend Pupil Destinations 2011 INTRODUCTION This report outlines destination data for the Bridgend Unitary Authority area. Careers Wales gathers information on all Year 11,12 and 13 pupils, including special schools, and produces these figures, based on their destination as at 31 st October NB: Unfortunately, the report does not have data on young people who have been attending full-time college courses. This year s report includes: Comments, graphs and figures for the academic year 2010/2011. Comments, graphs and figures for a 5-year period We put particular emphasis on the destinations of Year 11 and Year 13 pupils as the most significant transition points. Reports on all the Unitary Authority areas in Wales are available on careerswales.com as is the annual All-Wales Destination report. We hope you find our report and commentary interesting and that it will be of some value to you in your future planning decisions. If you require any additional information, please contact me at the address given below or speak to your local Careers Wales contact. Many thanks Sally Knock sally.knock@cwmgp.co.uk Contents: Year 11 Cohort 1 5-year Trends Year 11 2 Year 12 Cohort 3 Year 13 Cohort 4 5-year Trends Year 13 5 Definitions 6 Important Please note: Full-time education (college) figures may include a very small number of pupils who went on to do a part-time college course (i.e. a course of under 16 hours per week) after leaving school. Some percentages have been rounded up or down therefore totals may not always add up to 100%.

4 5-YEAR TRENDS YEAR 11 The total Year 11 cohort has dropped by nearly 13% since The percentage of pupils staying in education has increased significantly from 76% in 2007 to 84% in However the figures represent an actual decrease in numbers of 45, from 1379 to The distribution of pupils between school and college has remained fairly consistent. Around 55% have continued in school but the percentage continuing in college has increased somewhat from 21% in 2007 to 27% in Girls represent a greater percentage of those continuing in full-time education than their male counterparts throughout. This gap has closed quite significantly in the 5-year period with a difference of 7.6% in 2007 to one of 1.3% this year. The percentage of the cohort entering non-employed Work Based Training has decreased slightly from 5.1% in 2007 to 4.4% in 2011 with the actual number entering Work Based Training decreasing from 93 to 70. The numbers entering employment have continued to fall from 74 in 2007 to 17 this year. The NEETs figure has reduced steadily over the 5-year period from just over 7% in 2007 to this year s figure 4.4%. This can be explained in part by the increased numbers continuing in education and is a similar percentage to neighbouring UA areas. All Destinations Year Full-Time Education - School 55.4% 55.9% 59.9% 56.7% 57.4% Full-Time Education - College 20.6% 24.3% 22.8% 24.3% 26.8% Full-Time Education - Total 76.0% 80.2% 82.7% 81.0% 84.2% WBT 5.1% 3.6% 3.2% 5.0% 4.4% Employed / WBT Employed 5.4% 4.4% 2.2% 2.7% 2.0% NEETs 7.3% 8.0% 7.6% 7.1% 4.4% 70.0% 60.0% 50.0% 40.0% 30.0% 20.0% 10.0% 0.0% Full-Time Education - School Full-Time Education - College WBT Employed / WBT Employed NEETs Page 2

Education Remaining in Full-time Education Continuing in school Continuing in college Work and Training 89%, an unchanged percentage since 2010 but representing an actual decrease of 16 on the number of pupils. 75%, a decrease of 10 pupils. 14%, a decrease of 6 pupils. Most pupils staying in education will continue for at least 2 years, making figures for Work and Training very low. This year, fewer entered employment or employed status WBT following Year 12 than Year 11, 23 from Year 12 and 31 from Year 11. NEETs are equally balanced between male and female and are considerably lower than in Year 11. 6 YEAR 13 COHORT (These figures include a small number of pupils who stay on for a third year in sixth form) 814 in the cohort, a rise of 3.3% from 2010 Gender breakdown: Male 48.5%, Female 51.5% Education (See tables below and over) Remaining in full-time education including school/ college/ Higher Education (HE) 75.1% (611) an increase of 19 pupils on the 2010 figure. Continuing in school or college education (rather than progressing to HE) 21.7% (177) a slight percentage increases on the 2010 figure of 20.4% (161). Continuing into HE 53.3% a very slight percentage decrease from 53.8% in 2010 but an actual increase of 10 pupils from 424 to 434. Of those going on to higher education, 59.2% were female and 40.8% male. NB: This represents a significant differential between the genders and at 18% is higher than the company average of around 14%. Gender Breakdown Of those continuing in any type of full-time education, 53.5% were female and 46.5% male Work and Training Entering Employment 7.9% (64 pupils), similar to last year s 7.7% (61 pupils) 56% of these pupils are male Entering Employed Status WBT 0.1% (8 pupils) - all but one being male Of the remainder, 5.7% were NEETs and 9.8% did not respond at the time of the survey or are known to have left the area. 7 5-YEAR TRENDS YEAR 13 The percentage of the cohort continuing in some form of full-time education has decreased over the period from 79% in 2007 to 75% in This decrease can all be accounted for in the decrease in those entering HE down from 59.4% in 2007 to 53.3% in The percentage of those continuing in school and college (rather than progressing to HE) has increased slightly during the 5-year period. The rise has been just over 2% from 19.5% to 21.7%. Progression to Higher Education in Bridgend has actually dropped to a 5-year low this year and represents a drop of 6% since The percentage of young men progressing to HE may be a cause for concern given that our data shows a decrease of over 13% from a high of 58.3% in 2008 to this year s figure of 44.8%. The same figures for young women in Bridgend show a decline of 8% since However the proportion of young women going into HE (61%) remains significantly higher than the proportion of young men (45%).
