3 Introduction to Guide Information for Using This Guide Please feel free to print out this guide for reference. This guide is to help you install, authorize ( license ), and update your new copy of SPSS Statistics 17 for Windows. To begin the process you will need to uninstall any (or all) previous versions of SPSS on your system. During installation and licensing, screens will be displayed in which you must make choices or provide information. To complete the installation you will need the following: Administrative rights on the computer you are working on. [You probably have this. Try the install and if it fails, then you probably don t. Call CAS Computing if you have problems installing SPSS 17.] Network access to access the SPSS 17 folder over the network OR SPSS Statistics 17 CD. [The folder can be found on the V: drive, which most users already have access to after logging into the system using their UALBANY account.] The University at Albany SPSS Statistics 17 serial number, which is: Your authorization code. [If you don t have your code, you may find it on a sticker on the front of this document, or it can be acquired through the Assistant to the Chair of your department.] NOTE: An authorization code only works ONCE. Do not give it out as it will not work once a successful authorization has occurred. If at any time a problem occurs, such as an unexpected error message, please contact CAS Computing for assistance. 4 Uninstalling SPSS Removing SPSS in Windows XP To remove previous versions of SPSS, you will need to go to Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel. To get there: Click on Start, Settings, then Control Panel. In the Control Panel, locate and doubleclick on Add or Remove Programs. You may have to Switch your view to Classic View to see Add or Remove Programs icon. In Add or Remove Programs, scroll down the list to locate the current version(s) of SPSS installed on your computer. Once you have located it, click it once to highlight it. 5 Uninstalling SPSS Removing SPSS in Windows XP You will be prompted and asked if you are sure that you want to remove SPSS. Select Yes. The uninstaller will begin to run. Various windows may pop up during the uninstallation process. Do not cancel the uninstallation process. This may take anywhere from 3 10 minutes depending on your system. Once the uninstall process has completed, restart your system. To restart your system, click on Start, Shut Down, and from the drop down menu select Restart. 6 Installing SPSS Installing SPSS in Windows XP To install SPSS from the network V: drive, you will need to log into your UAlbany account, and navigate to the network share containing the installation folder. Open My Computer or Windows Explorer and double click on the V: drive (software P2 ) In the V: drive open the folder called Licensed. Open the folder called SPSS Open the Windows folder. Finally, open the CD folder. The path should read: V:\Licensed\SPSS 17.0\Windows\CD In the CD folder you will see several folders and other icons. Double click the setup icon to launch the installation process. Important! Please only double click the setup icon once. 7 Installing SPSS Installing SPSS in Windows XP After double clicking setup the SPSS Statistics 17.0 installer window will appear. Click on the first option: Install SPSS Statistics 17.0 Please note that the window will remain in the background during installation. A new window will appear. Choose the option: Single user license (if it is not already selected) The next window to appear will be the License Agreement. Feel free to review this document. This details the new features and changes in SPSS Statistics You can review this document anytime from SPSS. The next window will ask for customer information. Most of the information should be filled out for you, but feel to add/change the User Name and Organization information as necessary. Enter the serial number into the appropriate field. 9 Installing SPSS Installing SPSS in Windows XP The Destination window will ask you where to install SPSS. Unless there is a specific reason to change it, keep the default installation path. Next, the Ready to Install the Program window will appear. At this point you are done entering all of the information needed for the installation of SPSS Statistics 17.0, and the actual installation will begin. Click on Install. The window will change to one with a progress bar. Several windows may open/close. Please give the installer between 5 10 minutes to complete. When the installation is complete, the License and Register SPSS Statistics 17.0 window will appear. We do not need to register this software. Uncheck the Register with spss.com box. If you have your authorization code, please click OK to continue to the License Wizard. If you do not have your code at this time, you can start the 14 day trial period. 10 Licensing SPSS Applying Your License for SPSS in Windows XP The License Authorization Wizard will appear at the end of the SPSS Statistics Installation. It can also be started by going to Start > Programs > SPSS Inc > Statistics 17.0 > Statistics 17.0 License Authorization Wizard. To license your copy of SPSS, select the first option License my product now. (Please note that your Lock Code is located on this screen. If you encounter difficulties entering your authorization code, your technology coordinator may ask for this number.) In the Enter Code: field, please enter the authorization code that was given to you. The authorization code entry is not case sensitive. 11 Licensing SPSS Applying Your License for SPSS in Windows XP The progress screen may appear blank for several seconds. If the authorization is successful you will receive green text saying successfully processed all codes. Click on Next to continue. NOTE: If you receive red failure text, hit Back, and check the code to make sure it was inputted correctly to try again. If the red text persists, contact your technology coordinator with your Lock Code (see previous page). If your authorization was successful, the Licensing Completed window will appear showing you the list of packages/modules licensed along with the expiration date of the license. 12 Apply SPSS Patch Applying the latest Patch for SPSS in Windows XP Following the steps on Page 3, navigate to the SPSS 17.0 Patches folder. In this folder, double click the SPSSStatistcs17.0.1Patch icon. Important! Please only double click the setup icon once. It may take up to a minute for the installer window to appear. If an Open File Security Warning pops up, click Run. The patch installation process is similar to the SPSS installation. To get started, click Next. The next window to appear will by the License Agreement. Feel free to review this document. Choose the option : I accept the terms in the license agreement. At this point you are done entering all of the information needed for the installation of the SPSS Patch, and the actual installation will begin. Click on Install. The window will change to one with a progress bar. Several windows may open/close. Please give the installer between 5 10 minutes to complete. Once the patch has been installed successfully, click OK. A window will pop up asking you to restart your computer so the patch will take effect.
