With the exception of the cover, fold each page in half, keeping the blank side on the outside. The cover should be folded along both sides of the spine, with the blank side facing inward. 4. 3 All About Sloths Best known for their slow movements, sloths live in the tropical forests of Central and South America, where they use their long legs and curved claws to hang upside-down from tree branches. Sloths are arboreal animals, which means they spend most of their lives high up in the canopy of the forest. Did You Know? Sloths are related to armadillos and anteaters. Because they have extra vertebrae in their necks, three-toed sloths can turn their heads almost all the way around! Facts & Figures Sloths can sleep up to 0 hours a day! Sloths are divided into two groups based on the number of toes on their front feet. Sloths are so slow that algae is able to grow on their fur!

4 Distribution r tion and d Range R e THREE-TOED SLOTH There are four species of three-toed sloths: pygmy, maned, blown-throated, and pale-throated. Brown-throated sloths are the most common of any sloth species. All six sloth species live in tropical forests in Central and South America. TWO-TOED SLOTH There are two species of two-toed sloths: Linnaeus s and Hoffmann s. Like their three-toed cousins, two-toed sloths can be found in tropical forests in Brazil, Peru, Panama, and other surrounding countries. 3 4

5 Habitat and Diet Sloths are herbivores, which means they only eat plants. TROPICAL FORESTS Sloths are almost always found high in the forest canopy. HANGING HABITS Sloths spend almost their whole lives hanging upside-down! SUPERB SWIMMERS Believe it or not, sloths are actually great swimmers! 4 FOLIAGE FEAST Sloths fill their large four-chambered stomachs with lots of leaves, stems, and even fruit. 5 6

6 Anatomy Sloths have many unique features that are well-suited for a life in the trees. ROUND HEAD Sloths have small, round heads, as well as distinct markings on their faces. SHARP CLAWS Sloths claws can grow up to four inches long! 3 4 LONG LEGS Their long legs help sloths reach for tree branches as they crawl through the treetops. SPECIAL FUR Because algae grows in grooves on their fur, sloths have a green appearance that helps camouflage them!

7 Megatherium e Modern day tree sloths are descended from a prehistoric group of mammals known as Megatherium. Unlike the sloths of today, Megatherium were ground sloths that were were the size of elephants! Adult Human Megatherium It s hard to believe that modern sloths ancestors were so gigantic! Like their modern-day decsendants, Megatherium had large claws and teeth that they used to feed on leaves, trees, and bushes. These now-extinct mammals belonged to a group containing sloths, anteaters, and armadillos. 9 0

8 Just for Fun How To Draw A Sloth Are you like a sloth? STEP STEP STEP 3 If you have the traits below, you have a lot in common with sloths! CONSERVATIVE Sloths move slowly to conserve energy. Do you save up your energy for when you really need it? NOCTURNAL Sloths are awake at night and they rest during the day. Do you feel a burst of energy once the sun sets?
