Maya, Mexico By Gabriella Emery Period 3
Location Most of the Mayans currently live in southeastern Mexico and northern central America. The area consists of different terrain from volcanic mountains to flatlands that are rich in soil and provide a vast food source. Cancun and Merida are the most urbanized cities, while most other areas are still rural.
Language During the classical period, the Mayans spoke Yucatecan and Cholan. Now, these languages have divided into many different languages. In some areas, these languages that started in the classical period and got changed around are spoken on a regular basis. Other areas don t speak anything but Spanish because their government and schools speak Spanish. Present day, the Mayans speak Spanish.
Folklore The Popol Vuh, the Mayan religious book, describes the creation of man. First, the gods made man from mud, but didn t like it because they had no brains. Second, they made man from wood but they didn t like it because they had no emotions and couldn t praise them. Last, they made man from maize, which worked well and was perfect. (Maya 15)
Religion The Mayans believed in things like the world, heavens, and an unseen world. The unseen world was called Xibalba. (Maya 16) They worshipped gods such as the god of corn, rain, and the sun.
Special Holidays They celebrate holy week and Christmas just like Christians, but they also celebrate Crazy February. Crazy February is a 5 day celebration about the lost days from the end of the Mayan calendar.
The Mayan Calendar The oldest Mayan calendar goes back to August 13 th, 3114 BC. (Maya 14)
Living Conditions The Mam mostly lived in adobe houses with shuttered windows and packed dirt floors. The Mam lived on Chiampas. (Maya 16) The K'iche lived in rectangular adobe houses.
Medicine Curanderos used to be the healers for the Mayans. They were women who helped the sick to get better. The life expectancy of a Mayan was only 44 years old. Their treatments often included things like sweat baths, herbal treatments, offerings to the gods, and prayers. (Maya 17)
Marriage Most Mayan couples married at a very early age, late teens to early twenties. (Maya 17) Most of the marriages were arranged. Sometimes, the bride s parents would get money from the groom as a thanks for raising her gift.
Food They eat 3 meals a day, just like us. Corn is a very large part of their diets, being made into tortillas and bread and other things. The Mayans eat a lot of poultry, including fish because they live near a large fishing area. (Maya 18)
Education The school age Mayan children may either attend public schools or private Catholic schools.
Work In the cities, Mayans do work like us, on computers or in offices and so on. In the more rural areas, many Mayans farm corn or maize. (Maya 20) They grow it and take care of it and pick it to sell when it s done growing.
Fun Activities The Mayans used to play a game called hip ball, where the point of the game was to keep a rubber ball from hitting the ground while not being allowed to use your hands, feet, or head. (Maya 20) Now, they mostly play soccer.
Sundays On Sundays, Mayans go to church and then come home and relax, for the most part. Some groups get together to relax and they play and listen to music, such as mariachi bands.
Women s Hobbies Mayan women are known for their amazing weaving skills. They can make clothes, blankets, shawls and much more. They use the weaving looms that were passed down from their ancestors. (Maya 20) The women also know how to make beautiful pottery and masks. (Maya 20)
Men s Hobbies There are groups of men that get together to dance ceremonially to show how man was created and also purely for entertainment. (Maya 20)
Problems The Mayans are struggling because they are facing overpopulation and lack of food. Many people are dying or trying to run away to get to another place with more food. Unemployment rates are out of control also so people are having a very difficult time right now. (Maya 20)
Type of Government The Mayan civilizations used to be ruled by a king. The king would serve as a leader of the military and as a religious leader. (Mayan ) The area was divided up into city-states.
The King To be a good king, the king needed to be able to recognize the physical world and the supernatural world. (Mayan) He was the religious leader and he had to lead his troops into battle. He knew when to strike by looking at the start. (Mayan)
Future Kings Normally, the next king would be the oldest son to the king. He had to prove himself in battle, a good way to do this was to take a person captive. (Mayan) To be king, he would have to go through elaborate steps, sometimes involving human sacrifice. (Mayan)
The Preclassic Period During this time, which was roughly around 2000 BC-AD 250 (Mayan) the Mayans were becoming more agricultural. They also started trading with other groups and communities. By the end of this period, the Mayans had become organized quite similar to the Greeks, having distinct city-states. (Mayan)
The Classic Period ( ) The land was starting to show the repercussions of a very fast growing civilization. Food shortages started happening and dynasties started collapsing. The Mayan Civilization lost 90 percent of its population. (Mayan)
Social Structure The Mayan culture and social standing was based on how much money you had. (Mayan) If you had a lot of money, you had power. If you had no money, you had no power.
The Highest Social Class If you had a lot of money, you had some form of power, such as; political power, religious power, trading power, control over cities based on location. (Mayan)
The Next Social Class These people still had some money, so they could be; military officers, engineers, merchants, etc.
Teotihuacán This was the largest city at the time. Located in The Valley of Mexico, it was a very advanced area. (Mayan) This was a large trade center and was good for communication with other areas and was very full of politics.
Teotihuacán The city of Teotihuacán fell in the 600 s. (Mayan) Nobody knows the exact reason that it fell but it did and it messed up many things that were going well for the Mayans. The trade and communication that happened through the city stopped and left a large area empty. This was a major factor in the decline of the Mayan civilization. (Mayan)
The Aftermath Even after the decline of the Mayan civilization, some areas survived and have grown. For example, the Mayan community today holds about 5 million and are still located in the same area that they were years ago. (Mayan)
