BIOL& 241 Lab Unit 4: Nervous System Note: Images in this handout are intended as decoration and not study references This handout details the information students will learn in the 241 Lab. See syllabus for testing dates, and lab rules. As indicated in the following sections, you are responsible for the function of each structure you learn, whether that structure is learned on the cadaver, lab models, prepared specimens, or prepared microscope slides. For histology material, it is recommended that you look at all versions of each slide. NERVOUS SYSTEM: Nerves, Brain & Spinal Cord The labs of the nervous system will consist of the following instructional materials: dissection of the sheep brain observation of the human brain and spinal cord models of the brain and brainstem slides and models of the spinal cord 2 slides: 1- motor neurons of the ox, 2- c.s. and l.s. sections of a spinal nerve model of the ventricular system dissection of a sheep eye models of the eye slides of the eye models of the ear slides of the ear NERVES Nerves on Cadavers (n. denotes nerve, please use this on your test responses). Identify the following nerves. List one specific effector for each nerve. anterolateral neck brachial plexus (intermediate to anterior and middle scalene muscles) phrenic n. (also in thoracic cavity) vagus n. arm (upper arm only) musculocutaneous n. axillary n. radial n. median n. ulnar n. lateral thoracic wall thoracodorsal n. long thoracic n. hip/leg femoral n. sciatic n. tibial n. common fibular n. sympathetic chain (sympathetic trunk) Nerve slides Look at both cross and longitudinal sections. Use text & histology atlas as references. Also learn the function of each of the four neuron types (see your lecture notes or the text). Learn the definition of nucleus (use nervous system definition). What is a somatic motor nucleus? List its function. What is a visceral motor nucleus? List its function. What is a somatic sensory nucleus? List its function. What is a visceral sensory nucleus? List its function. 2

3 BRAIN USING the TEXT and ATLAS, students should identify the following structures on the sheep brain, human brain, and/or models of the human brains and brainstems, except as indicated. If a structure is UNDERLINED, this means it is visible on the sheep brains (no underline means the structure cannot be seen on sheep brain). USING the TEXT or LECTURE NOTES students should learn the function of each of the following structures, except where indicated.
