1 CODE: PSYC 215 TITLE: Counseling Techniques INSTITUTE: Business and Social Sciences DEPARTMENT: Psychology COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students will study and practice basic strategies for helping within the context of interviewing, individual and group counseling. Competency will be evaluated through the use of videotapes, discussion, and participation in class activities. Students will spend 40 hours in an internship dedicated to the human services, during which direct practice will take place. PREREQUISITES: PSYC 105 Introduction to Psychology I or PSYC 106 Introduction to Psychology II; and PSYC 111 Introduction to Human Services with a grade of C or higher, or permission from the instructor CREDITS: 3 Credits Lecture Hours: 3 ADDITIONAL TIME REQUIREMENTS: 40-hour internship requirement COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: Classify various counseling theories. Practice various counseling techniques. Demonstrate counseling skills in class and in the field internship. Determine the appropriate client intervention and problem-solving technique through class and field practice by completing a 40-hour internship at a satisfactory level. Demonstrate and appraise counseling attributes that reflect respect, genuineness, acceptance, reciprocity, empathy and empowerment in written assignments, class discussions, practice in class, and the field internship. GRADING STANDARD: % = A 92-90% = A % = B % = B 82-80% = B % = C % = C Less than 70% = F

The Nature of Counseling Stages of Counseling Becoming a Professional - A Different Kind of Talking Ethical Considerations Responsible Practice Counseling as a New Experience Getting Started, Attending, Listening Person of the Counselor Support & Empathy Exploration & Elaboration Communication in Counseling Assessment & Working Agreements Common Client Issues Gaining New Perspectives Managing Reality Cognition and Affect Resistance in Counseling Changing Behaviors Clinical Relationships Issues & Dynamics Addressing Self and Other Disclosure Issues that Counselors Face Models of Counseling Endings and Transitions Models of Counseling Crisis Intervention Behavior Mod/Counselor Training Professional Issues I. National Human Services Standards Standard 12- Human Systems: Knowledge and theory of the interaction of human systems including: individual, interpersonal, group, family, organizational, community, and societal, students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of: Theories of human development. An understanding of the capacities, limitations, and resiliency of human systems. The emphasis on context and the role of diversity (including, but not limited to ethnicity, culture, gender, sexual orientation, learning styles, ability, and socio-economic status) in determining and meeting human needs.

3 Standard 14- Information Management: Knowledge and skills in information management, students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of: Obtaining information through interviewing, active listening, consultation with others, library or other research, and the observation of clients and systems. Recording, organizing, and assessing the relevance, adequacy, accuracy, and validity of information provided by others. Compiling, synthesizing, and categorizing information. Disseminating routine and critical information to clients, colleagues, or other members of the related services system that is: Provided in written or oral form, and Provided in a timely manner. Maintaining client confidentiality and appropriate using client data. Using technology for word processing, sending , and locating and evaluating information. Standard 15- Planning and Evaluation: Knowledge and skill development in systematic analysis of services needs; planning appropriate strategies, services, and implementation; and evaluation of outcomes, students will be able to an understanding of: Knowledge and skills to analyze and assess the needs of clients or client groups. Skills to develop goals, and design and implement a plan of action. Skills to evaluate the outcomes of the plan and the impact on the client or client group. Standard 16- Interventions and Direct Services: Knowledge and skills in direct service delivery and appropriate interventions, students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of: Theory and knowledge bases of prevention, intervention, and maintenance strategies to achieve maximum autonomy and functioning. Skills to facilitate appropriate direct services and interventions related to specific client or client group goals. Knowledge and skill development in the following areas: o Case management, o Intake interviewing, o Individual counseling, o Location and use of appropriate resources and referrals, and o Use of consultation.

4 Standard 17- Interpersonal Communication: Development of interpersonal skills, students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of: Clarifying expectations. Dealing effectively with conflict. Establishing rapport with clients. Developing and sustaining behaviors that are congruent with the values and ethics of the profession. Standard 18- Client Related Values and Attitudes Human services values and attitudes and promote understanding of human services ethics and their application in practice, students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of: The least intrusive intervention in the least restrictive environment. Client self-determination. Confidentiality of information. The worth and uniqueness of the individual including culture, ethnicity, race, class, gender, religion, ability, sexual orientation, and other expressions of diversity. Belief that individuals, services systems, and society can change. Interdisciplinary team approaches to problem solving. Appropriate professional boundaries. Integration of the ethical standards outlined by the National Organization for Human Services (NOHS) and the Council for Standards in Human Service Education (available on the NOHS website). Standard 19- Self-Development: Awareness of values, personalities, reaction patterns, interpersonal styles, and limitations, students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of: Conscious use of self. Clarification of personal and professional values. Awareness of diversity. Strategies for self-care. Standard 20- Field Experience: Students will demonstrate progression from: Observation to Directly supervised client contact to II. Certified Drug and Alcohol Abuse Counselor Standards

5 C Initial Interviewing Create a therapeutic alliance with the client by incorporating the following three categories of skills: o Listening o Processing o Providing feedback Demonstrate through role-playing the following eight skills: o Attending o Paraphrasing o Reflection of feeling o Summarizing o Probing o Interpreting o Providing information and feedback as per Motivational Interviewing) o Appropriate use of self disclosure. C201 - Introduction to Counseling Define counseling/ therapy as per the IC&RC. Identify key concepts of, and noted figures associated with the following counseling approaches: Reality Therapy, Cognitive/Behavior Therapy, Transitional Analysis, Structural Family Therapy, Client Centered Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, and Gestalt Therapy. Explain the rationale for choosing and changing counseling approaches during the course of counseling. C202 - Counseling Skills Identify, demonstrate, and explain the purpose of the following counseling skills: Attending, Paraphrasing, Reflection of Feeling, Summarizing, Probing, Counselor Self Disclosure, Interpreting and providing information and feedback as per MET. Integrate self-help group participation as an adjunct to the counseling process. Identify six stages of counseling and employ the skills found in each stage.

6 C203 - Crisis Intervention Define crisis intervention within the framework of alcohol/drug counseling as per IC & RC. Identify causes of crises (i.e. The four types of trauma: situational, developmental, intrapsychic, existential.) Identify and give examples of the five psychological reactions to crisis (Shock, anxiety, depression, anger, intellectualization.) Explain four goals of crisis intervention (stabilization, pressure relief, problem solving, and return to pre-crisis function) and describe six stages comprising the crisis intervention process (establish rapport, gather data, reframe crisis, explore realistic options, contact supportive individuals, arrange for follow-up. Identify the risk factors and cues associated with suicide. Describe and demonstrate the appropriate set of responses to a suicide crisis (form relationship, identify key issues, assess for lethality, evaluate client strengths and resources, develop and implement plan, intervene appropriately to respond to imminent danger. Identify & explain the qualities of an effective crisis counselor (empathy, effective questioning, rapid assessment, realistic viewpoint, effective resource utilization.) C207 - Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Explain how a client s cognitions represent a synthesis of internal and external stimuli. Identify the role of cognitions in the client s view of self, view of the world, and view of the past and the future. Demonstrate how alterations in client cognitions affect the client s affective state and patterns of behavior. Apply CBT theory and techniques to the treatment of substance abuse disorders. C401 - Addiction Recovery Understand the difference between substance abuse and substance dependence as per the current DSM. Acquire basic knowledge of the various models of addiction. Explain to client the various stages of addiction and recovery. Be able to explain the following terms: o Addiction o Recovery o Harm reduction. o Self Help groups, etc. o Relapse and Relapse Prevention o Abstinence o Sobriety Updated 2016 Page 6 of 8

7 o Wellness (Biopsychosocial) C402 Psychological Client Education Be able to relate to the client the main psychological features often associated SUD. Help the client understand how their psychological and social strengths and weakness can be related to their recovery. Communicate basic information about the following terms: o Mental Health o Mental Illness o Wellness Explain to clients the role of psychiatric medications in recovery C404 Sociocultural Client Education Develop an understanding of the following various characteristics of: o Major cultural groups represented in client populations, including but not limited to, African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, and Native Americans. Special populations: o Disabilities o Sexual orientation o Female o Youth o Gang DEPARTMENT POLICIES: Attendance is required and absences may necessitate a student dropping the course. Individual instructors may determine a limit for classes missed. Students are responsible for class assignments that are missed. Class will begin and end on time. Lateness or early departure is not acceptable.
