1 Lilly s Purple Plastic Purse Day 1 Lesson Plan: First Grade Maggie Lumbreras Date: September 8, 2008 Purpose: This is the second book in an author study of Kevin Henkes. The strategy focus is prediction, with the students having opportunities to make predictions throughout the story using a Turn & Talk format. Charts/environmental supports: Prediction Chart see attachment Connect: During the past few days we read a book called Chrysanthemum. While we were reading through this story, you discussed what was happening by turning and talking with your partner. We are going to begin a new story today and you will get to continue discussing story with your partners. Teach: Introduce the chart and review the strategy of prediction. Tell the students we will be making predictions about the story as we read. Introduction of the text(s): Today we re going to read a new book written by Kevin Henkes called Lilly s Purple Purse. We will be stopping occasionally as we read to turn and talk with our partners about what we think is going to happen next in the story. After you turn and talk, you will have the chance to share out your predictions and I will write those predictions on our chart. We will also compare our predictions with what happens in the story. Page 9 Read Page, then reread line 1. This sentence is making me think a change might be coming in this story. Listen again. Based on what we ve read, what do you predict is going to happen with Lilly at school today? Page 10 Point out the number of times Mr. Slinger said, Not now. Think aloud I notice that Mr. Slinger keeps saying not now. Hmm that makes me think he Listen Page 11 will let her show it later. Read the page. Ah oh. Lilly just showed her purse after she had been told not now, and Mr. Slinger is not amused. What do you think is going to happen next? Share Out Share/closing: You made a lot of predictions today and shared your thinkings with each other. Tomorrow we will continue reading Lilly s Purple Plastic Purse and will make some more predictions.

Charts/environmental supports: Prediction Chart see attachment Connect: Continue Lilly and prediction. Teach: Review the strategy of prediction refer to chart telling what predictions are, as well as the predictions the students made yesterday. Introduction of the text(s): 1. Today we re going to continue reading Lilly s Purple Plastic Purse. Before we start, I d like you to turn and talk with your partner about everything you remember from yesterday. 2. After kids share out As we were reading Lilly yesterday, you were making predictions about what would happen next based on what we knew was happening in the story. Refer to chart for definition and student predictions. Today you will turn and talk with your partner and make more predictions as we read through our story. Page 15 Page 17 Oh my gosh, what do you think Mr. Slinger is going to do when he finds the letter Lilly put into his bag? Why do you think that? Lilly is very upset. What do you think she is going to do when she gets home? Why do you think that? Page 21 Hmmmm, what do you think Mr. Slinger is going to do with Lilly s apology? Why do you think that? Share Out Page 26 Do you think Lilly will be able to keep her purse in her desk during the school day? Why do you think that? Charts/environmental supports: Compare/Contrast Chart How Kevin Henkes books are alike/different. Connect: To what has been read so far in Lilly as well as to the other Kevin Henkes books read to this group of first graders. Teach: Compare/Contrast how similar and different. Introduction of the text(s): 1. Today we re going to finish reading Lilly s Purple Plastic Purse. Before we start, I d like you to turn and talk with your partner about the predictions we ve made so far and what happened. Finish reading the book. Listen Page 26 Chrysanthemum Read the page. Reread the last 2 sentences with wow. I think I remember different characters saying wow at different times throughout this story. Go back through and find/reread those parts. I m thinking that I remember a pattern in Chrysanthemum...where they kept repeating her name and now they are repeating wow. Share/closing: Tomorrow we get to start another Kevin Henkes book. It sure will be fun to see if he uses patterns again and if there is a problem that gets solved like in the books we ve already read!
