1 Sashiko Purse Create your own sashiko designs using Designer s Gallery QuiltWorks Created By: Kelly Laws, Marketing Project Manager Supplies: Designer s Gallery QuiltWorks Baby Lock Sewing Machine & Embroidery Machine 2 5 x 7 wooden oval placks 1 box decorative thumbtacks 2 8 x 23 pieces of denim fabric 3 ½ x 32 piece of denim fabric All-purpose thread to match Heavyweight interfacing Heavyweight stabilizer Embroidery thread silver Stitch Witchery tape Temporary marking pen Rotary cutter, mat & ruler Instructions: Design Construction: 1. Open Designer s Gallery Quilt Works. 2. Select the outline wizard. 3. Select image sashiko2.bmp from the files built in to QuiltWorks. You will find it by following the path C:/program files/baby Lock/QuiltWorks/Images/Line art/ sashiko2.bmp. 4. Open the file then select Line art then Next, then Finish. 2 5. Notice how some of the lines do not connect. To fix this, select the inside top line on the right and drag the center handle to pull this section longer. Repeat for the inside left line. 6. Use the shape tool to move points and straighten any imperfections in the curves. 7. Use the shape tool again to extend the ends of all the lines slightly. 3 8. Right click on your design and select properties. Select the Sashiko tab. Enter 3 for the number of rows across and the number of rows down. 9. Click the box for show sashiko, and see how your design will look like when tiled across the screen. 10. Select the grid. 11. Select all the lines and copy and paste to create a second group of lines. 12. Align the two groups. Select all the stitching and copy and paste creating a row of half circles. 13. Due to the width of the hoop and the size purse, you will need to delete a few lines from one side. So you end up with a partial circle, then two half circles, and another partial circle. 4 14. Select the entire group and copy and paste to create a second row of stitching. 15. Align the second row to the first row. 16. Continue to duplicate one more row in the same manner. 17. Turn on the 160 x 260 hoop. 18. Select all, then re-sequence. 19. With all the lines selected right click and combine the lines. 20. Resize the design proportionally to fit within the hoop. Leaving space at the top of the hoop. 21. Save the design. 22. Place one piece of denim fabric and the heavy weight stabilizer in the hoop. Baby Lock Project: Sashiko Purse Page 4 of 6

5 23. Thread the embroidery machine with the silver embroidery thread. Select the design. 24. Embroider the design. Purse construction: 25. Layer the two denim pieces with right sides facing, and the heavy weight interfacing together. 26. Using a ½ seam allowance Stitch around the outer edge. Leave an opening for turning. 27. Clip the corners and turn right side out. Press. 28. Press the seam allowance at the opening inside and fuse closed. 29. With the right side facing outward, position the non-embroidered end of the purse piece along the outer edge of the wooden plack. 30. Hold in place with a decorative thumbtack. Thumbtack the denim fabric to the wooden placks on both ends. Make sure there is a thumbtack every two-three inches. 31. To make the handle. Fold and press under ¼ along one long edge. Fold the handle strip in thirds and press. 32. Place a strip of heavyweight interfacing along the inside middle fold of the handle. 33. Fold the sides in covering the interfacing and topstitch along both edges of the handle. 34. Position the ends of the handle on the inside of the wooden plack and secure in place with thumbtacks.
