TEXTBOOK(S) AND/OR OTHER MATERIALS NEEDED Morford, Mark P. O., Robert J. Lenardon, and Michael Sham. Classical Mythology (10 th Edition) Oxford University Press, ISBN-13: The textbook is also available for rent as an etextbook from CourseSmart: You would have to toggle between the textbook and the exercise assignments. It s a matter of personal preference. Although the 10th edition is relatively new, you might find it used for purchase or rent at reasonable prices on most of the standard sites, e.g., amazon.com, half.com, etc. Students should have their textbook from the first week of class. Not having your textbook will not be an acceptable excuse for late work. If for some reason you cannot obtain a textbook on time, I suggest that you work with the companion web site for the textbook: Students who add this course late should refer to the Late Registration section for further guidance. ADDITIONAL READING Required: No other books or materials are required. Recommended: You will find the companion web site for the 10 th edition of the textbook very helpful: Page 1 of 7

2 LATE REGISTRATION Students who register during the first week of the term, during late registration, will already be one week behind. Students who do not feel they can meet the course deadlines should not enroll in the class. If they have registered, they should see their registrar, academic adviser, GoArmyEd/eArmyU representative, or Military Education officer to discuss their options. Also note that late registration may mean you do not receive your book in time to make up the work you missed in Week #1. Not having your book on the first day of class is not an excuse for late work after the deadlines in the Schedule. All course deadlines in the syllabus apply. ELECTRONIC OFFICE HOURS I am always available by phoward@troy.edu. You may also try to reach me by telephone during the school week, but I don t use voice mail. Your best bet is , to which I will respond within 24 hours. During the course of this term, you may find me responding from interesting locations I love to travel. PREREQUISITES There are no special prerequisites for this course. ENTRANCE COMPETENCIES The ability to read and write effectively Standard English. I do not grade or respond to texting. STUDENT EXPECTATION STATEMENT You are expected to meet all of the course deadlines in reading the assigned chapters, completing the Chapter Exercises, taking the Chapter Quizzes, taking the two Tests, completing the various Discussion Forums, and taking the Proctored Final Exam. All course deadlines are firm, and there are no extensions. The best way to avoid missing a deadline is to work several chapters ahead. CATALOG DESCRIPTION Myths of the Greeks and Romans and their influence. PURPOSE (COURSE OBJECTIVES) You will become familiar with the major characters and stories of Greek and Roman Mythology. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES Through the old-fashioned process of repetition, you will become very familiar with some of the ideas and information that characterize a liberally educated person. TROY Online COURSES AT TROY UNIVERSITY All TROY Online courses at Troy University utilize the Blackboard Learning System. In every TROY Online course, students should read all information presented in the Blackboard course site and should periodically check for updates at least every 48 hours. TROY All students were required to obtain and use the TROY address that is automatically assigned to them as TROY students. All official correspondence (including bills, statements, e- mails from instructors and grades, etc.) will be sent ONLY to the troy.edu (@troy.edu) address. All students are responsible for ensuring that the correct address is listed in Blackboard by the beginning of Week #1. is the only way the instructor can, at least initially, communicate with you. It is your responsibility to make sure a valid address is provided. Failure on your part to do so can result in your missing important information that could affect your grade. Your troy.edu address is the same as your Web Express user ID followed Students are responsible for the information that is sent to their TROY account. You can get to your account by logging onto the course and clicking Login. You will be able to forward your TROY to your earmy account. You must first access your TROY account through the TROY link found on the Web site. After you log in to your TROY account, click on options on the left hand side of the page. Then click on forwarding. This will enable you to set up the address to which you will forward your . COURSE REQUIREMENTS Read the appropriate chapter assignments. Complete the eight Discussion Board assignments. Complete the 25 Chapter Exercises under Exams and Quizzes. Complete the 25 Chapter Quizzes under Exams and Quizzes. Take the two non-proctored Tests under Exams and Quizzes. Page 3 of 7

4 Take the Proctored Final Examination under Exams and Quizzes. ATTENDANCE POLICY Although physical class meetings are not part of this course, participation in all interactive, learning activities is required. Please complete as soon as possible, but no later than Sunday, March 20, 11:59 PM, Introductions in the Discussion Forum section. MAKE-UP WORK POLICY Missing any part of this schedule may prevent completion of the course. If you foresee difficulty of any type (i.e., an illness, employment change, etc.) which may prevent completion of this course, notify the instructor as soon as possible. Failure to do so will result in failure for an assignment and/or failure of the course. All course deadlines are firm. After the deadlines, the exercises and quizzes will disappear -- in order to prepare for the two tests and the proctored final exam, you would then need to work solely with the textbook and the companion website. In other words, don t expect feedback when you submit an exercise at the midnight hour. INCOMPLETE GRADE POLICY Missing any part of the Course Schedule may prevent completion of the course. If emergency circumstances will prevent the student from completing the course by the end of the term, the student should complete a request for an incomplete grade. Note: A grade of incomplete or INC is not automatically assigned to students, but rather must be requested by the student by submitting a Petition for and Work to Remove an Incomplete Grade Form. Requests for an incomplete grade must be made on or before the date of the final assignment or test of the term. The form will not be available after the last day of the term. A grade of INC does not replace an F and will not be awarded for excessive absences. An INC will only be awarded to student presenting a valid case for the inability to complete coursework by the conclusion of the term. It is ultimately the instructor s decision to grant or deny a request for an incomplete grade, subject to the policy rules below. Policy/Rules for granting an Incomplete (INC) An incomplete cannot be issued without a request from the student. To qualify for an incomplete, the student must: a. Have completed over 50% of the course material and have a documented reason for requesting the incomplete. (50% means all assignments/exams up to and including the mid-term point, test, and/or assignments.) b. Be passing the course at the time of their request. If both of the above criteria are not met an Incomplete cannot be granted. An INC is not a substitute for an F. If a student has earned an F by not submitting all the work or by receiving an overall F average, then the F stands. METHOD OF INSTRUCTION Page 4 of 7

5 This is an etroy class. It is not a correspondence course in which a student may work totally at his/her own pace. There are assignments, on-line discussions, and/or exams with due dates. Refer to the schedule at the end of this syllabus for more information. You may work ahead and complete the course ahead of scheduled deadlines, but the deadlines themselves are firm. There will be no extensions. METHOD OF EVALUATION Your final grade will be determined by dividing the total number of points earned by the total number of points available (4,220). ASSIGNMENT OF GRADES All grades will be posted in the student grade book in Blackboard and will be assigned according to the total number of points earned. The following scale will be used to determine your final course grade. A % B 80 89% C 70 79% D 60 69% F 59% and below In averaging grades, I will NOT round up to the next whole number, i.e., = = B. I will automatically review all grade entries for any final average within one point of the next letter grade. If the ball does not break the plane of the goal line, it s not a touchdown. In the 1965 Orange Bowl, Joe Namath and the football crossed the Texas goal line on a quarterback sneak (I was there and saw it), but the referee overruled the head linesman s call, thus costing Alabama the game. Coach Bryant s comment to Namath: If you had gone in standing up and handed the ball to the official, there wouldn t have been any question. (Fortunately, by that time Alabama had already won the National Championship.) SUBMITTING ASSIGNMENTS All assignments are to be completed within Blackboard. They may all be found under Exams and Quizzes and Class Discussions. Please read the following very carefully: Please be aware that your responses on the exercises must be in Standard English. I don't read texting. All proper nouns (names) must be capitalized in order to receive credit. This is standard practice in literate society. Your responses may be short, but spelling and syntax must be correct. Work carefully. If a response contains significant grammar/spelling errors, I may award no credit, even though the information is correct. Proof read! THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ IT AT LEAST TWICE. I have selected an excellent textbook written and taken through ten editions by a group of outstanding scholars -- Morford, Lenardon, and Sham. There is much variation and additional detail on the various myths, and you will find a wealth of information on the internet. Many things on the internet are excellent, but many are pure rubbish and Page 5 of 7

6 quite inaccurate. For the purposes of this course, please confine your work to the textbook and the companion web site both are well researched and written. Don't go "googling" for answers, unless asked to do so. I am aware of and can track the various "shortcut" sites on the internet, e.g., Quizlet and Study Blue, and if I notice certain egregiously incorrect answers from these sites, you will receive no credit (0) for the entire exercise and its accompanying quiz if this occurs a second time, the COURSE GRADE will automatically be an F. (Please read the previous sentence again. Now read it a third time.) Sometimes, people try to do things backwards by taking the quiz first and then answering the exercise items by supplying answers from the quiz options, often using one of the ridiculuously and uniquely incorrect options that I have written; if I notice this tactic, you will receive no credit (0) for the exercise and the quiz. The course process works well, so please don t subvert it and risk failing the entire course. Thanks. EXAMINATION SCHEDULE & INSTRUCTIONS The deadlines for this course are firm. To avoid problems and disappointment, begin your work in a timely manner DON T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST DAY. Protect yourself by working ahead. If an exercise is still in progress at the time of the deadline, the entire exercise will earn no credit. If you are rushing to beat the clock, be sure to hit the Submit button before the deadline. This course requires one proctored exam. The dates available for this exam are Monday, April 25, 6:00 AM through Friday, May 13, 6:00 PM. You are responsible for choosing an acceptable proctor and submitting the online proctor form to TROY Online before this exam begins. Instructions for doing so may be found at or under the Tech/Proctor Info button in Blackboard. The proctor form will be available early in the term, and you should start preparing immediately. All questions about the proctor form or proctor options should be directed to TROY Online. Contact information is available at the posted link. INTERNET ACCESS This is an on-line class. Students must have access to a working computer and access to the internet. Students can use the TROY computer lab, a public library, etc., to insure they have access. Not having a computer or computer crashes are not acceptable excuses for unsubmitted work. Have a backup plan in place in case you have computer problems. Life can be cruel!
