5 Take notes on the readings. You should create a note taking system that suits you. Whatever format you choose, make sure you separate concepts (bid ideas) from facts. The first line of a paragraph in a textbook is usually the concept; the rest of the paragraph consists of facts that support the concept (big idea). As you read, write down big ideas, and facts that support those big ideas. The first sentence of a paragraph, the topic sentence, is a big idea. Do NOT write in complete sentences. Create your own note taking techniques and abbreviations. See the example below: Sample Note Taking Technique pp New England Colonies -driven not by wealth but by religion Protestant Reformation and Puritans -Luther s Reform. Spread thru Europe -John Calvin of Geneva -huge affect on Am. -Calvinism: God omniscient, people weak, sinful elect are chosen by God to go to heaven (predestination); good works can t get you to heaven -can t live wild lives and go to heaven: sings of conversion = sanctified good lives; Visible saints -Church of England-Henry VIII-1530s - Puritans -from poor areas in England, like Calvinism, want to purify Church of Eng. -Separatists-only want true believers to be in Church -James I runs out Separatists Pilgrims Go to Plymouth -flee to Holland: kids corrupted or Dutchified -VA Company-Seps. go to Am. -Mayflower-1620-only ½ made it alive; Mile Standish-tough Indian fighter -Plymouth Bay-did not land at Plymouth Rock -squatters-no legal right to be there -Mayflower Compact: not a Const.; agmt. To form a got. By majority rule; town meetings set up to make rules winter: tough; 44/102 made it thigns improve, Thanksgiving Day in N.E. -Beaver and Bible help survive -William Bradford: governor of Plymouth, 30x; feared the godly experiment would go bad b/c of non-believers Plymouth merged with MA Bay
