1 MARICOPA COUNTY JOB DESCRIPTION STEM COORDINATOR MARKET RANGE TITLE: EDUCATION SERVICE PROGRAM MANAGER DEPARTMENT: MARICOPA COUNTY EDUCATION SERVICE AGENCY (MCESA) DIVISION/SECTION/UNIT: EDUCATION INNOVATION (LOW ORG 3750) FLSA STATUS: CLASSIFIED/UNCLASSIFIED: EXEMPT CONTRACT/UNCLASSIFIED SALARY: $33.44 $45.32 ($69,555 $94,265) PURPOSE STATEMENT: The purpose of the Director of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Instruction is to prepare all students, including girls and minorities who are underrepresented in these fields, to be proficient in STEM subjects, and inspire all students to learn STEM and, in the process, motivate many of them to pursue STEM careers in order to meet our needs for a STEM-capable citizenry, a STEM-proficient workforce, and future STEM experts. The Director of STEM Instruction will do this through the following focuses: Supporting the state-led creation and implementation of Arizona Common Core Standards in STEM subjects by influencing and leading efforts in the ongoing creation of curriculum and STEM units and in the development, evaluation, administration and improvement of assessments aligned to the standards. Training and supporting great STEM teachers, with both deep content knowledge in STEM subjects and mastery of the pedagogical skills that are required to teach these subjects well. Creating a STEM Master Teacher Corps that recognizes, rewards, and engages the best STEM teachers and elevates the status of the profession. Using technology to ensure access for teachers and students to high quality instructional materials; aiding in the development of high-quality assessments that capture student learning; and accelerating the collection and use of data to provide rich feedback to students, teachers, and schools. Creating opportunities for inspiration and excitement around STEM fields through individual and group STEM experiences outside the classroom. Supporting the creation of STEM-focused middle and high schools serving minority and high-poverty schools, as well as ensuring all schools have access to relevant STEM-expertise. Providing leadership at the county and state levels in order to support innovation in K-12 STEM education by collaborating with the Arizona Department of Education, County Agencies, Local Education Agencies, and formal and informal education service providers in order to ensure strong and strategic leadership.

2 PRIMARY INDICATORS/DUTIES: The Primary Indicators/Descriptors include, but are not limited to: 1.0 Support the current state-led movement for shared standards and resources in STEM-related subjects. (MCESA Standards 1, 2, 4, 6) 1.1 Participate and provide leadership in state-level committees to create academic standards and resources in math and science. 1.2 Participate and provide leadership in state-level committees to create academic standard implementation guides. 1.3 Participate and provide leadership in state-level committees to create assessments aligned to state and national standards. 1.4 Create and implement professional development for teachers and administrators on the integration of standards and assessments into instruction. 1.5 Collaborate with the Arizona Department of Education, Local Education Agencies, and other relevant organizations on the development of formative assessments in STEM-related subjects. 1.6 Create and implement professional development for teachers and administrators on the integration of formative assessments into instruction. 2.0 Train and support exemplary STEM teachers who are able to prepare and inspire teachers and students. (MCESA Standards 2, 3, 8) 2.1 Collaborate with other MCESA staff to create and implement ongoing courses for teachers that will develop deep content knowledge in STEMrelated areas. 2.2 Collaborate with other MCESA staff to create and implement ongoing courses for teachers that will develop mastery of pedagogical skills in STEM-related fields. 2.3 Collaborate with other MCESA staff to create and implement jobembedded support for teachers that will ensure implementation of deep content knowledge and mastery of pedagogical skills in STEM-related fields (e.g., professional learning communities, instructional coaching, mentoring, etc.) 2.4 Collaborate with other MCESA staff to create and implement professional development for administrators in order to evaluate and support STEMrelated instruction. 2.5 Collaborate with other MCESA staff to support ongoing professional development of teachers serving in county-organized peer evaluator program(s). 3.0 Recognizing and rewarding exemplary STEM teachers by creating a STEM Master Teacher Corps. (MCESA Standards 2, 4, 6, 9) 3.1 Create a process to identify exemplary STEM teachers using state and national teaching and content standards, and create a STEM Master Teacher Corps. 3.2 Create opportunities to recognize and reward exemplary STEM teachers using state and national teaching and content standards by including identified teachers into the STEM Master Teacher Corps.

3 3.3 Develop and evaluate resources to create an online repository where STEM Master Teacher Corps members share lesson plans, resources, and videos of classroom instruction. 4.0 Use technology to provide instructional materials and assessments, and to aid in the collection and analysis of student achievement data. (MCESA Standard 8) 4.1 Collaborate with the Learning and Communication Systems Director to ensure that relevant and appropriate technology is modeled during professional learning opportunities for teachers and administrators. 4.2 Collaborate with the Director of Innovative Practices to ensure that technology is used to improve the quality of instructional materials during STEM-related instruction. 4.3 Collaborate with the Director of Innovative Practices to ensure that technology is used in the development and deployment of high-quality assessments that capture student learning. 4.4 Collaborate with the Director of Innovative Practices to ensure that technology is used in accelerating the collection and use of data to provide rich feedback to students, teachers, and schools. 5.0 Create opportunities for inspiration and excitement around STEM fields through individual and group STEM experiences outside the classroom. (MCESA Standards 4, 5, 6, 7) 5.1 Collaborate with business partners, government agencies, informal learning institutions, and educational institutions such as universities and local education agencies to create authentic STEM learning experiences for students, which are integrated into the K-12 curriculum. 5.2 Collaborate with business partners, government agencies, informal learning institutions, and educational institutions such as universities and local education agencies to create authentic STEM learning experiences for students, which are offered outside of school. 6.0 Support the creation of STEM-focused schools and ensure all schools have access to STEM-expertise. 4 REPORTING STRUCTURE A. Supervision Received: Assistant Superintendent for Education Innovation B. Supervision Exercised: QUALIFICATIONS* A. Minimum education and/or experience: A Master s Degree in Education from an accredited college or university. A minimum of five (5) years classroom teaching experience in STEM content area(s). Arizona teacher certification. B. Other combinations of education, experience, or training that may be considered in substitution for the minimum requirements: C. Preferred education and/or experience: Major, minor, or 18 hours of additional coursework in a STEM-related field. Arizona Principal or Supervisor Certification. Extensive knowledge of English Language Development. Direct experience with implementation of math and science curriculum and assessments. Experience delivering student and/or adult instruction via interactive video conferencing. Highly qualified status (NCLB) in middle school and/or secondary mathematics and/or science. D. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics curriculum, instruction, and assessment, including content and pedagogical knowledge. Knowledge of state and national standards relative to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, including the Common Core Standards for Mathematics. Knowledge of research methods and techniques used in studying educational programs, including project planning, methodology, reporting, and processes. Strong practical and theoretical knowledge of school improvement, curriculum, and teacher and professional development. Ability to successfully work with adult learners in a training and coaching capacity. Ability to plan, organize and facilitate the application, management, and administration of federal and state entitlements, grants, and other funds. Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills. Effective planning, organizational, and time management skills. The ability to work well under pressure in a multi-task environment.

5 Ability to apply professional knowledge and administrative ability to the specific education project. Ability to reason logically and think independently and creatively on educational projects. Computer Literate: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, Project and Internet Research. Knowledge of statutory law, case law, federal regulations and state regulations governing the operations of education service agencies in Arizona. E.
