1 Queen Edith Community Primary School Speaking and Listening Policy June 2011

2 1. Introduction We believe speaking and listening to be fundamental to the present and future success of children in learning and in life. Effective speaking and listening is the foundation of all the activities that take place at Queen Edith: the taught curriculum, the hidden curriculum, playtimes and lunchtimes, extra-curricular activities and the whole ethos of the school. Respectful and productive relationships between all who form part of the school community are crucial aspects of this ethos. As a staff, we therefore foster good communication amongst ourselves and with our pupils, their parents and carers, and with the wider community. We place a high priority on supporting the development of good speaking and listening skills amongst our pupils and identify Communicating as one of the 5 key skills on which the Queen Edith Curriculum is built. The Renewed Framework for Literacy (2008) identifies four areas which schools should plan for in order to promote appropriate skills amongst their pupils: Speaking Listening Group discussion and interaction Drama These are the same strands as in the DfES pack Speaking, Listening, Learning (2003) which also includes a wealth of resources and teaching strategies. They provide the structure within which we plan as a school to develop pupils oracy skills, both in English lessons and across the curriculum. Speaking and listening has been a recurring element in staff professional development for many years, both discretely and linked with other CPD priorities. Training days held with both teachers and teaching assistants have explored: The Speaking, Listening, Learning toolkit (February 2004) Supporting children learning English as an Additional Language/EAL (January 2004 & 2008) Storytelling.(Summer 2005) Developing questioning (February 2006) Speaking and listening in the context of the Renewed Framework (April 2008) Supporting pupils with Speech, Language and Communication Needs/SLCN (January 2009) Talk for Writing (January 2009) In 2011, we intend to use the national Year of Communication to return once again to the crucial importance of speaking and listening for children s development, from the earliest years, throughout school and on into adult life. 2. Aims for Speaking and Listening at Queen Edith During their time at Queen Edith, we aim that children should become fluent and confident communicators, increasingly matching their style and responses to their purpose and audience. The skills of speaking and listening are therefore included in the key expectations for each phase. Children should: be encouraged to speak with confidence, clarity and fluency recognise the value of listening

3 be confident in the value of their own opinions and able to express them to others be able to adapt the use of language for a range of different purposes and audiences, including using Standard English learn to converse, sustain a logical argument and respond to others appropriately be encouraged to concentrate, interpret and respond appropriately to a wide range of listening experiences be prepared to be open-minded, to value the contribution of others and to take account of their views appreciate the diversity of languages, dialects and accents in the school and value the experience and contributions of children from a wide variety of linguistic backgrounds develop empathy through drama 3. Speaking and listening in the curriculum Good speaking and listening are fundamental to good learning. From the first days in school, speaking and listening play a vital part in a child s progress in all curriculum areas and teachers plan to develop these skills in a wide variety of ways. We recognise the importance of verbalising thoughts as a means of learning and plan for children to have opportunities to discuss and formulate their ideas before committing them to paper. These opportunities can take place in a whole class situation, with a partner, or in a small group. Paired work, or talking partners, is used throughout school as a powerful way to engage more children throughout the lesson and to support the development of their ideas and opinions. Intricately connected to good speaking and listening is the development of the skills of group interaction and discussion, or collaboration. Queen Edith pupils develop these skills through group work across the curriculum, helping them to become fluent speakers and sensitive listeners who operate confidently in a wide range of contexts. Speaking, listening and collaboration form part of the curriculum in all subject areas. Amongst the activities planned for are: circle time show and tell story time paired reading talk for writing visiting speakers brainstorming ideas giving and receiving instructions paired computer use in ICT practical activities and problem solving in maths role-play in history science experiments group musical compositions paired constructions in DT sports leadership in PE end of topic presentations for parents

Speaking and listening outside the taught curriculum Children spend a large amount of time in school outside of taught lessons and we are keen to promote opportunities to develop their speaking and listening skills at all times. Some of the ways in which we aim to develop these skills are through: assemblies, including class assemblies weekly class council meetings and appointment of class representatives to the School Council (Y2-6) and One Voice (KS1 Council) enrichment events such as poetry afternoons and talent shows concerts (by visitors and by children learning instruments) phase productions 5. Drama Involvement in drama provides children with powerful means of expressing themselves and communicating across the curriculum. It can also be used to help children explore ideas and develop their understanding in a wide variety of situations. The Renewed Framework stresses the integration of the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, and drama activities are used throughout the school in literacy units and across the curriculum. These range from using hot-seating to develop insights into character through to scripting and performing plays. Large scale performances are also an on-going part of school life and drama is sometimes offered as an extra curricular activity. 6. Planning for the needs of all our children The Renewed Framework and Speaking, Listening, Learning toolkit provide the basis for our overall planning for progression in speaking and listening activities in the curriculum. Tracking back will be necessary at times to provide adequate differentiation. About one third of our pupils are learning English as an additional language (EAL). Their experiences and knowledge provide us with a rich resource on which to draw for the benefit of the whole Queen Edith community. Over many years, we have developed our provision of bilingual resources in terms of books, tapes and CDs, which, as well as supporting our bilingual pupils, promote an interest in language and languages amongst all our children. More recently, the introduction of French teaching across KS2 has provided another key opportunity for teachers to explore Queen Edith s linguistic diversity with their classes. Our policy on Children Learning English as an Additional Language sets out our approach to supporting bilingual children, especially in the crucial areas of speaking and listening. We also have dedicated EAL support staff who play particularly important roles in supporting both children and staff in this area. A significant minority of our children have some form of Speech, Language or Communication Need (SLCN), including pupils with difficulties in expressive or receptive language, social interaction or the physical activity of speech itself. The DFE Inclusion Development Programme resource provides a wealth of ideas and

5 resources for teachers as they support these pupils and seek to make our classrooms communication friendly places. Some of our pupils have particular difficulties with SLCN and so are further supported by our experienced TAs either in a small group or 1-1, according to their IEP targets. In the Foundation Stage, small Spirals and other language groups are used to develop children s speaking and listening skills. In KS2, social skills groups are sometimes used with targeted children to support their abilities to make and maintain friendships, or to learn how to collaborate. Some of our children have regular visits from a speech therapist, and we welcome the expertise they bring to the school. 7. Resources We possess a wide range of resources appropriate to different age groups which support the achievement of our aims. These include: a range of puppets, used to support the development of children s speaking, listening and collaborative skills (a puppet workshop for staff was held in June 2004 to develop expertise in this area) a collection of storytelling boxes (created in summer 2005), containing a wealth of artefacts to stimulate exciting story telling and drama activities story sacks in the Foundation Stage and KS1, offering opportunities to develop skills in retelling well known stories a series of Story Spinner DVDs, providing the opportunity for children to see and hear stories told by a professional storyteller and to develop their imagination and oral language skills computers in the ICT suite all equipped with headphones and a microphone to facilitate speaking and listening activities (e.g. oral story telling and playback, multimedia presentations with recorded commentary). 8. Assessment and Record Keeping For statutory reporting, children are assessed for their skills in speaking and listening at the end of Years 2 and 6. On-going formative assessment of the four strands of speaking and listening is carried out by all teachers to inform planning for speaking and listening. Suitable targets are incorporated into IEPs as necessary. Children s development in speaking and listening is commented on in the annual reports to parents. Conclusion We regard the development of good speaking, listening and collaborative skills as fundamental to the achievement of children at Queen Edith. We also believe that, by promoting these aspects of the work of the school, we are equipping our children with essential life skills which will be of value to them both in their personal lives and in their future work, at secondary school and beyond.
