1 Pennsauken Elementary Summer Reading Incoming 4th grade Dear Incoming 4th Grade Student, Attached you will find a copy of your summer reading assignments for the upcoming school year. Requirements: Read at least 2 books: one fiction and one non fiction, and complete one of the attached assignments for each book. Each book should be a minimum of 75 pgs. (You can read more books if you like.) In fact, if you read 10 books, you may receive a FREE BOOK from Barnes and Noble and $10 toward opening an account or deposited into an existing account at TD Bank!! Please see attached forms for specific details from each business. If you choose to participate in either the TD Bank or Barnes and Noble Reading Incentives, you must take your completed forms to each business to receive each incentive, these forms do not need to be returned to school. All assignments will be collected on Friday, September 9, These required assignments will be compiled, and you will earn a certificate for up to 10 pts. toward one Language Arts test grade of your choice. You may redeem the certificate during any marking period you choose. In addition, there will be a special celebration during the month of September to recognize students accomplishments of their required summer reading assignments. Summer Reading Assignments: 1. Read a fiction book that is 75+ pages 2. Read a non fiction book that is 75+ pages 3. Complete book report for the fiction book 4. Complete creative project for the non fiction book All summer reading will be available on the district s website, Extra copies of the assignments will be located in the Main Office of your school, as well as the children s section of the Pennsauken Public library. 2 Fiction Book Report Assignment Write a book report following the outline below for your fiction book. The report must include all information outlined below and written in paragraph form. Book reports should be typed and printed out or written neatly on lined paper. Book Report Outline First Paragraph: Introduction Tell who the author and illustrator are, and write 3 5 telling why you choose your book. Some questions to think about when writing your response. You are not answering all of these questions. They are here to guide your response to the bolded instructions above. Was the title interesting? Did you like something on the cover? Have you read a book in this series before? Have you read books from this author before? Was it something else? Second Paragraph: The Setting The setting is where and when a story takes place. Write 3 5 describing the setting of your book. Some questions to think about when writing your response. You are not answering all of these questions. They are here to guide your response to the bolded instructions above. Think about WHEN the story takes place, WHERE it all happens, and how much TIME passes from start to finish. Describe the setting so your classmates feel like they are INSIDE the story! Third paragraph: The Characters Choose one of the characters from your book and write 3 5 telling about him/her. Some questions to think about when writing your response. You are not answering all of these questions. They are here to guide your response to the bolded instructions above. Who is the character? What is his/her name? What does the character like or dislike? Is there something special the character does? Instead of just naming the character, talk about what makes the character so special. Fourth Paragraph: Plot Write a short summary (5 ) about your book telling what happens in the beginning, middle, and end. Think about the most important events in the story. Be careful not to re tell the whole story but give enough detail so that the plot makes sense to someone who hasn t read the book. Remember to use sequence words such as: in the beginning, first, next, after that, then, last, finally, in the end. Fifth Paragraph: Conclusion Write 3 5 telling if you would recommended the book or not and why. It s important to give your opinion! Would you recommend this book to someone else? Tell why or why not.

5 Non fiction Creative Project Pick one of the creative projects below and complete for your non fiction book. See the attached rubric for grading s. Option #1: Create an information box Make an information box with five significant items from the book, or that represent the topic of the book. On lined paper, write the name of each item in your box and a sentence for each item explaining the item s importance or why you choose to include that item. You may use any type of box to hold your items: shoe box, cereal box, tissue box, etc. Option #2: Create an advertisement poster Create a movie poster advertising your book. This may be completed on any type of paper you choose: poster paper, construction paper, etc. The poster should include: title and author of the book a picture representing the central idea or topic of the book two quotes or facts from the book that support the central idea or the topic a rating of the book and a paragraph (3 5 ) explaining the rating (the rating should be out of 1 to 5 stars) Option #3: Create a painting, collage or sculpture and explanation This should be a representation of the central idea or topic of the book. Along with your visual representation you should include a one paragraph (3 5 ) explanation of the representation and how it is related to the specific central idea or topic of the book you read. Visual representations can be: Original drawing Original painting Collage Sculpture made of clay or other materials
