STAAR TESTING REQUIREMENTS 21

STAAR Testing Requirements Students enrolled in grades 3 8 will take their grade level math assessment unless they are receiving math instruction above their grade level. These students will take the STAAR math assessment for which they are receiving instruction if the content covers the entire curriculum for that grade level. For example, a student in grade 5 who is receiving instruction in grade 6 math would take STAAR grade 6 math if he or she is being taught all the TEKS required for grade 6 math. Q&A #16 22

STAAR Testing Requirements Students enrolled in grades 3 8 will take their grade level assessment unless they are enrolled in and receiving instruction in a high school course that has a related assessment. These students will take the STAAR EOC assessment. The score he or she receives will count toward the cumulative score for graduation. Q&A #15 23

STAAR Testing Requirements For a student who has STAAR as part of his or her graduation requirement, he or she should take a STAAR EOC assessment during the spring, summer, or fall administration as they are completing the course. Typically, this is at the end of the school year so the student would participate in the spring administration. However, if by the end of the school year a student only received instruction in part of Geometry (for example), then he or she would not take STAAR Geometry in the spring since they have not received instruction in the entire course. When the student completes the entire Geometry course, he or she will take STAAR Geometry. Q&A #11 24

STAAR Testing Requirements A student who has STAAR as his or her graduation requirement and who has completed Algebra I (for example) prior to spring 2012 is not required to take STAAR Algebra I to fulfill his or her graduation requirement. As a result, the student s cumulative score for mathematics will be based on fewer assessments, in this case 2 not 3. However, the student could choose to take STAAR Algebra I beginning in spring 2012 and has the option of using the score in his or her cumulative score. Q&A #39 25

STAAR Testing Requirements A student who earns high school credit for Algebra I (for example) from out of the state or country or from a private school is not required to take STAAR Algebra I if the Texas school district accepts the Algebra I course credit from the school in which it was taken. As a result, the student s cumulative score will be based on fewer assessments, in this case 2 not 3. However, the student could choose to take STAAR Algebra I and has the option of using the score in his or her cumulative score. Q&A #21 26

STAAR Testing Requirements In some cases where a student has already earned and received credit for all three courses in a content area (for example Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II), that student will not have to meet an assessment requirement in that content area. The student would not be required to take STAAR Algebra I, Geometry, or Algebra II. Also, the student would not be required to meet Level II or Level III performance on STAAR Algebra II to graduation on the RHSP or DAP, respectively. Q&A #21 27

STAAR Testing Requirements If a student on the MHSP is enrolled in and completes Algebra II (a course not specifically required on the MHSP), the student must take STAAR Algebra II. However, the student has the option of using the STAAR Algebra II score in his or her cumulative score. Q&A #37 28

STAAR Mathematics Has more cognitively complex questions Has more questions that have multiple steps Has more questions that have application context Has more open-ended (griddable) questions 33

STAAR Mathematics Includes questions that are asked in a reverse manner (e.g., NOT questions) Includes questions where the answer could be Not here or None of the above Includes questions that assess content and incorporate process skills Includes questions that require students to manipulate a ruler (grades 3 8 only) 34

Griddable Questions A type of open-ended question used on all mathematics assessments Purpose is to give students opportunities to derive answers independently without being influenced by answer choices provided with the questions 35

Griddable Questions Grade 3 math will have 3 griddable questions Grades 4 and 5 math will have 3 griddable questions 36

Griddable Questions Grades 6, 7, and 8 math will have 4 griddable questions 37

Griddable Questions Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II will have 5 griddable questions 38

Griddable Questions Correct Incorrect 39

Process Skills Mathematics process skills for grades 3 8 will be assessed in context not in isolation. They will be incorporated into at least 75% of the test questions. For the spring 2012 mathematics tests, the range of questions that incorporate process skills is 75% to 87%. 40

Rulers for Measurement For STAAR grades 3 8 mathematics assessments, students may be asked questions in which they have to choose the appropriate ruler, manipulate the ruler to measure the artwork, and then use that information to find an answer. For STAAR EOC mathematics assessments, students do not have rulers to manipulate during the test; measurement skills are assessed in other ways. 41

Rulers for Measurement A customary ruler (8 inches) is printed on the outside edge of the first page of the reference materials for grades 3 8. A metric ruler (20 centimeters) is printed on the outside edge of the second page of the reference materials for grades

Reference Materials Are used for grades 3 8, Algebra I, geometry, and Algebra II. Consist of formulas, constants, conversions, etc. that students may need to use to answer test questions. List the most common information that could be used to solve problems, however it is not an exhaustive list. 43

Reference Materials The reference materials will be embedded in the paper test booklets and perforated so students can tear them out. At a student s request, district personnel may assist in tearing out the reference materials from the test booklet. The reference materials will be embedded in online tests as a pop-up window. 44

Reference Materials Students are not encouraged to write on the reference materials but are not prohibited either. If students write on the reference materials during testing, the materials must be destroyed after testing. Otherwise, districts can use the reference materials for instructional purposes. 45

Reference Materials Campuses may, but are not required to, print copies of the reference materials from the TEA website and distribute them to students to use during paper and online testing. Please note the specific instructions on the TEA website for printing the reference materials with the rulers (grades 3 8). 46

Printing Instructions for Reference Materials with Rulers Rulers In order to produce rulers that are consistent with the rulers printed on the statesupplied mathematics reference materials, follow these steps: 1. Set the print menu to print the pages at 100% by selecting None under the Page Scaling option. 2. Print on paper that is wider than 8 ½ inches, such as 11 by 17 inch paper. 3. Trim the paper to 8 ½ by 11 inches so that the rulers will be on the edge of the paper. 47

Graph Paper One sheet of graph paper, front and back, is available for all mathematics assessments. Grades 3, 4, and 5 1 centimeter squares Grades 6, 7, and centimeter squares Algebra I, geometry, and Algebra II 0.4 centimeter squares 48

Graph Paper If students tear out and write on the graph paper during testing, it must be destroyed after testing. Otherwise, districts can use the graph paper for instructional purposes. Campuses may, but are not required to, print copies of the graph paper from the TEA website and distribute it to students to use during paper and online testing. 49

Graph Paper The graph paper will be embedded in the paper test booklets and perforated so students can tear it out. At a student s request, district personnel may assist in tearing out the graph paper from the test booklet. The graph paper will be embedded in online tests as a pop-up window. 50

Workspace Paper tests will have blank space around the test questions for students to make notes and perform calculations. Online tests will have new tools for making notes and performing calculations. 51

Workspace Additionally, any student may request scratch paper for paper or online testing based on his or her need. If students write on the scratch paper during testing, it must be destroyed after testing. More details can be found at Optional Test Administration Procedures and Materials 52

Calculators A graphing calculator must be provided to each student taking paper or online administrations of Algebra I Geometry Algebra II In addition to the required handheld calculator, a calculator will be embedded in the online tests as a pop-up window. Districts may provide students with more than one calculator, but they must provide the minimum (graphing). A calculator must not be provided to students taking the grades 3 8 assessments unless the eligibility criteria for this accommodation are met. 53

Field-Test Questions In addition to the total number of questions listed in the test blueprint, the first spring administration of each STAAR mathematics assessment will include 8 field-test questions. 7 multiple-choice questions 1 griddable question The 8 field-test questions do not count toward the student s score. 54

STAAR WITH NEW MATHEMATICS TEKS 55

New Mathematics TEKS For any school year, STAAR mathematics assessments will always align to the TEKS implemented in the state for that school year. 56
