2 Finding good, affordable housing can be a challenge. The King County Housing Authority, which serves King County s suburban cities, offers dozens of safe, well-maintained housing communities affordable to low-income households. KCHA s subsidized housing options, including public housing, are outlined in this brochure. For more information about individual properties and eligibility criteria, please visit our website at Eligibility requirements Applicants must meet income and family composition requirements, as well as other established eligibility criteria. Eligibility requirements are posted at each property. Families with children, elderly people age 62 or older and disabled applicants are given priority on the waiting list. Rental rates Rent is based on total family income. The size of the apartment is based on the number of people in your family. In most cases, tenants are not required to pay more than percent of their income toward rent, and rental rates include an allowance for minimum utility usage. 2

You may select up to two sites or up to two regions. (You may not select one site and one region.) When your name nears the top of the waiting list you ve selected, you will be contacted to update your application. At that time you will be required to provide documentation of social security number and citizenship status for all family members. You will also be asked to provide income and asset information, as well as landlord references. Security deposits are determined according to property requirements. Amounts range from $75 to $250, depending on the property. All properties are non-smoking. 3

10 Housing choice vouchers The King County Housing Authority also administers the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program, which can be reached by calling (206) There is a separate application process for the Housing Choice Voucher program. Eligible applicants must receive their voucher before they can be subsidized under the program. Both the subsidized housing and HCV programs have waiting lists. Neither program is a substitute for an emergency housing program. 10
