Overview Pollinator Health and Neonicotinoids The Guide to Seed Treatment Stewardship Information for Seed Treatment Applicators Information for Growers Washington, D.C. Update How You Can Help

Neonicotinoids Popular Target in Coverage of Pollinator Health

Many Factors Affect Bee Health USDA and EPA: pesticides have not been proven to be major cause of decline in bee health.

Why Seed Treatments Are Important Benefits eight major crops: corn, soybean, wheat, cotton, canola, sorghum, potato and tomato. Allows for the right amount of product to be applied at the right time. Decreases the number of spray applications of agrichemical products. Provide necessary protection to seeds so plants have strong, healthy start. Encourage conservation tillage practices. If neonicotinoid pesticides were not available: 77 percent of neonicotinoid treated acres would switch to other insecticides. Every 1 lb of neonicotinoids would be replaced with ~ 5 lbs of alternatives.

Promoting Stewardship Together

Tailoring Best Practices for Stewardship

Guide to Seed Treatment Application 1. Comply with all regulations; train employees. 2. Use best practices to minimize dust off. 3. Adopt stewardship documentation for full life cycle. 4. Properly discard of treatment, treated seed and rinse water. 5. Convey all required and pertinent seed treatment information.

Guide to Seed Treatment Application Stewardship Sections 1. Selection of Treatment Products 2. Application of Seed Applied Technologies 3. Treated Seed Labeling 4. Storage of Seed Treatment Products and Treated Seeds 5. Discarding of Seed Treatment Products and Treated Seeds

Guide to Seed Treatment Application Section 1: Selection of Treatment Products Manufacturer/Consultant Recommendations Determine Efficacy Safety Application Requirements and Process Verification Export Considerations

Handling, Planting and Disposal of Treated Seed 1. Follow label directions 2. Be aware of wind speed & direction as well as: Pollinators and hives Flowering habitats 3. Properly dispose materials 4. Ensure no treated seed in commodity grain channels

Handling, Planting and Disposal of Treated Seed Stewardship Sections 1. Safe Handling and Transport of Treated Seeds 2. Storage of Treated Seeds 3. Planting of Treated Seed 4. Disposal of Excess Treated Seeds

Handling, Planting and Disposal of Treated Seed Start with the seed tag

Handling, Planting and Disposal of Treated Seed Section 1: Safe Handling and Transport of Treated Seeds Personal Protection Equipment Transporting Treated Seed Protect from direct sunlight, extreme heat and moisture Avoid undue mechanical abrasion Handling Treated Seed Avoid exposure to dust Proper dispose of any spillage

Handling, Planting and Disposal of Treated Seed Section 2: Storage of Treated Seeds Follow tag language for storage requirements Store in well ventilated facility Keep treated seed secure from children, livestock, wildlife and unauthorized persons

Handling, Planting and Disposal of Treated Seed Section 3: Planting of Treated Seed Use of Seed-flow Lubricants Avoid excess use rates of lubricants Planting Survey for presence of hives, flowering plants Cleaning of Planting Equipment Do not use compressed air

Handling, Planting and Disposal of Treated Seed Section 4: Disposal of Excess Treated Seeds Small Quantities of Pesticide-Treated Seeds Plant according to product label Off Farm Disposal of Seed Not Acceptable for Planting and/or Larger Quantities of Pesticide Treated Seed Zero tolerance for treated seed kernels in commodity grain channels

White House National Strategy to Promote Pollinator Health May 19, 2015 White House announced the National Strategy to Promote Pollinator Health. The strategy involves over a dozen Federal agencies and departments Understand pollinator losses, Improve pollinator health Enhance pollinator habitat.

National Strategy Metrics Honeybee health Overwintering loss metric is to reduce to no more than 15% within 10 years Monarch Reach 225 million butterflies by 2020 Habitat for all pollinators 7 million acres of forage in 5 years

EPA Priorities for National Strategy Reevaluate neonicotinoid pesticides by Finalize benefits assessments for imidacloprid and thiamethoxam soybean seed treatments by fall Publish framework outlining approach to protect monarch butterflies that balances monarch protection and weed management. Comments due July 24.

Managed Pollinator Protection Plans (MP3 s) EPA is encouraging the creation of state-based managed pollinator protection plans to assist communication between farmers and beekeepers. Current California, Colorado, Florida, North Dakota, Mississippi Model being developed for other states Key Elements Stakeholder engagement Communication between grower and beekeeper prior to application. Notification of hive locations

EPA Proposal to Mitigate Acute Risk to Bees Prohibits the spraying of 76 chemicals (approximately 3000 products) during bloom when bees are present for the purpose of crop pollination. Bees would have to be moved off site or no spraying can occur. There are no exceptions. No new regulations for seed treatment included in this proposal. Comments due July 29.

Another Way to Help: Create More Forage for Bees Various initiatives Million Pollinator Garden Challenge millionpollinatorgardens.org Pollinator Partnership Bee Buffer Project Pheasants Forever Burpee - Bee Brigade Bayer - Feed a Bee Syngenta - Operation Pollinator

Adding to the bottom line; The Mechanics of a Seed Treatment Strategy Putting the future of Agriculture first by focusing on all aspects when deciding on seed treatments.

What is there to lose when Neonicotinoids are banned???? Why The Pressure Now??? A Driven big drop in by overall a small yield across percentage all crops. of NGO/Activists/Social Groups The Passion most effective VS and Facts/Research/Data safest method of protecting seeds. The Larger lowest overall groups use rate targeted per acre Highly on Social effective Media at small doses and very safe. No Distrust control over against yield robbing Big insects. & Small Ag/Big Corporations Higher consumer prices on goods produced by affected crops (Meat, feed, fuel, oils, etc) Seed EPA s treatments Waterways supported a Act $80 Billion & Neonic industry in Report the US alone. fueling suspicion The global insecticide market is projected to reach $4.2 Billion by Non-GMO movement highlighting all things Ag The projected growth rate of insecticides per year is 10.8%. The loss of Neonicotinoids will ultimately negatively affect jobs in various markets related to farming.

Seed Treatment Market Value - USA Approximate Grower trust Value the $1.46 technology Billion *** Adds protection, performance and yield $14 Seed Treatment can ad as much as 7 BU/Acre In many cases supports a reduction in foliar Insecticide Value New segment growth New applications Fungicides 10%-12% Growth YOY TYPE Insecticides Fungicides N-inoc/Micro Nematicides Safener Other Has replaced many dangerous chemicals from the 50 s-90 s High level of environmental stewardship Targeted insect approach Seed Treatments has added Protection, Performance and Yield! ***Data supplied by Ben Kirk

Insecticide Strategy Dynamic Product Selection and Process Control We have consolidated insecticides by 75% - Enhanced inventory control Focusing on three main insecticides Motivates high level of focused training To be applied with strategic seed coaters/polymers - Low Dust Off/Seed Protection Selecting insecticides with low use rate Less exposure Training and guidance on tank blends Ensures treated seed is dry when planting Selecting insecticides for regional insect pressures Target insect approach New seed treater technologies Ensure application accuracy & gentle seed handling

The Mechanics. New Strategy On Application Equipment Low Friction Conveyors Cleated Belt replaces Crescent belt = Less friction on seed Lower treater design Lower conveyor = Less friction on seed Cleated belt ensures slower belt speed Proprietary designs Closed Loop Pumping Systems Increased record keeping Dyna Flow Kit CPS only National Equipment strategy More focus on all levels of automation Less spills Closed System Closed Pumping Systems New Generation Seed Treaters New Atomizer design 80% coverage Better application on seed Improved mixing & drying process Less treated seed spillage High efficiency process

CPS Investing in new Seed Treater Equipment Designs New KSI Applicator. Enhanced seed coating process Very low friction on seed Most affecting atomizer design Most affective drums design Very little seed spillage Bayer CropScience On Demand System 98% Accurate High level reporting Software controls process Process forced polymer use Low seed friction

Stewardship Strategy Strategic Insecticide Strategy Acquiring hi-tech seed treaters and equipment. Adding the best seed coaters (polymers) to all insecticide blends. Selecting treatment products on Heubach Meter results Ultra low Dust-Off %. Clean site = Safe site directive. Regional insect pressure strategy only use insecticides when necessary.
