1 The Student Services Staff at Gordon Cooper Technology Center believe: All students have dignity and worth All students can achieve and meet high standards of academic and career competencies All students ethnic, cultural, racial, sexual differences and special needs are considered in planning and implementing the school counseling program Current student data is instrumental in the development and planning of the counseling program s ability to promote and encourage student success All students shall have access to a full-time, state-certified, master s-degree level school counselor to deliver the counseling program applying the ASCA Ethical Standards for school counselors The students at Gordon Cooper Technology Center are high-achieving learners who graduate as empowered citizens, members of thriving families, contributing to their community and economic prosperity. The mission of Gordon Cooper Technology Center (GCTC) School Counseling Program is to provide a comprehensive, developmental counseling program addressing the academic, career and personal/social development of all students. In partnership with other educators, parents or guardians and the community, school counselors facilitate the support system to ensure all students at GCTC have access to and are prepared with the knowledge and skills to contribute at the highest level as productive members of society

All new students are invited on campus to fill out forms, meet with staff and celebrate their enrollment 2. August- Student Services Staff conducts in-service training for the purpose of orienting the faculty and staff about the services available in the department. The in-service includes, but not be limited to: - 2 -

3 Introduction of the TEAM members; area of responsibility Description of services offered Update on enrollment Update on methods of referral Pertinent information regarding students with special needs Update on new federal or state regulations that will affect Student Services Provide calendar of activities 3. August- Student Service Team will be introduced to the Student Body. Services available to students will be reviewed. Procedures for referrals and appointments will be discussed and identified. 4. Staff will review the Student Handbook with students as they enter programs and attend student orientation assemblies. All students must have the appropriate consent forms and permission forms signed and on file. 5. The following services and information will be available to students throughout the year: Testing, assessment and interpretation Career guidance Program planning Academic integration Financial Aid application process Referrals to sponsoring agencies Job Market analysis/physical requirements Job Readiness preparation Personal and social adjustment sessions (small group or individual) Job placement information Information and referrals concerning Adult Basic Education and G.E.D. preparation Information and access to college credits based upon articulation agreements or scholarship guidelines. 6. The following services will be available for the Faculty throughout the year: Student/parent/teacher conferences Information on referral agencies - 3 -

4 Information on curriculum modification for specific students Information on I.E.P. students within the confidentiality guidelines Placement information Assessment information on each student as needed for program success Agency progress reports mailed for qualifying students 7. Throughout the year the Student Services Team will strive to present our services professionally, and we will adhere to the Ethical Standards for School Counselors established by the American School Counselor Association and the National Career Development Association: Members will uphold the ethical standards of their respective professional organizations Members will attend workshops, conferences, and professional development events to keep up-to-date on current trends and legal issues Members will use opportunities to inform the community of the programs at GCTC through advisory boards, service organizations, civic clubs, and the news media 8. Career Enrichment Services Provided to Area Schools A Targeted K-12 Approach to Student Recruitment Rationale for Change: Recruitment should be a byproduct of the career services provided to students rather than an effort to drum up interest the semester before students have the opportunity to attend GCTC. Being aware of the opportunities available at GCTC at an early age will assist students in choosing a career. P-K-1 st Grade Students have opportunity for a tour of the Aviation program to create an interest. During the tour students have their picture taken in the cockpit of an aircraft, and the students receive a GCTC promotional airplane with the date of the GCTC open house printed on the aircraft. (Available upon request). Students build and design a Lego environment or project and develop a presentation around a theme which varies each year

5 Ten teams from local schools participate in a challenge to build a robot capable of performing various tasks. We also host a qualifying event where 200+students build robots with guided capabilities. 5 th Grade Students will be exposed to the (STEM) career pathway by the use of the Rocket Curriculum. 6th-8 th Grade Emphasizing the importance of women in STEM careers. Gives students and parents an opportunity to learn about the variety of careers available. Ages Summer Camp Career Safari, Summer Academ Students select program from the following options. Main Campus: Construction Alternative/Renewable Energy Health Careers Exploration Aviation Exploration Nano Technology Babysitting Boot Camp Bio Sciences/Robotics Seminole Campus: Photography Movie Making Automotive Exploration 6 th -12 th Grade-Aviation Day-1 st Saturday in April. Aviation Campus offers an 8 hour program with a variety of hands-on experiences for all students. The program includes an introduction to Aviation opportunities including helicopters, fixed wing air-craft, airport operations, aerodynamics, and compulsion. 8 th Grade 8 th Grade students from all sending schools in the district come to GCTC, are welcomed by adult staff from campus wide areas. Students are given four, 15-minute hands-on experiences, in a Career Majors, from each of the - 5 -

6 Career Clusters offered. The students have lunch while on campus, while enjoying music and fun activities. 9 th Grade Students are given the OKCIS career assessment during the 9 th grade year at participating partner schools. GCTC provides in-service training for partner school staff members. * 10 th Grade Sophomore Showcase Bus talkers will enter each bus and give a short talk and overview of directions for the day. 1. Students will visit as assigned on their nametag. 2. AT THE END OF THE 3 rd SESSION the instructor will have all students fill out the survey on the back of their nametag. The must leave all surveys with instructor. A designated Student Services rep will collect the surveys at the end of the last session. 3. After final program visit, students will turn in surveys, keep their name tag, take goodies and head toward their bus. Instructors will also use a system of targeted recruitment for students who have demonstrated an interest in attending specific programs. Students will have the opportunity to take one program specific day of shadowing. During this experience, the student will have the opportunity to choose one program to visit which matches their area of career strength listed on the PLAN assessment, which is completed the students sophomore year of High School. The student must bring a copy of their current transcript and attendance information. Parents will be given specific program information related to the top three program choices of the child. Once the initial interview is completed the instructor will select interviewees from the pool of applicants. 9. * Blastoff Pre-enrollment sessions will be conducted for each student prior to enrollment: All feeder schools will receive assistance with high school pre-enrollment - 6 -

7 On-campus students will pre-enroll first, then new junior, seniors and sophomores respectively. (Target month is February) Sophomore students will receive special activities for recruitment. Any high school students who has not had an opportunity to visit and tour will be able to do so prior to pre-enrollment High school students and adult students have the opportunity to pre-enroll, (target date Spring Break), then new adult pre-enrollments will be considered. There will be specific days for each student to meet with the enrollment counselors, assess their plans and accomplishments, and re-enroll in the same program or choose a different program based on the students interests/needs Adult students seeking admission must meet the minimum criteria recommended for program entry. Referrals will be made for those needing Adult Basic Education If programs are full, a waiting list is kept and prospective students are notified as spot become available All Student Services staff work to refer students to special programs as needed All secondary and adult students develop a Plan of Study with Instructors as Mentors. The file indicates goals after completion of training. All students have the opportunity to develop a portfolio and learn job application skills. All students are informed about the opportunities to obtain college credits through articulated programs. All high school and adult students who have enrolled in GCTC for the coming school year be required to participate in an Orientation Meeting at the campus where their class will be held. The activity will be conducted in the evening and the students will have the opportunity to fill out all necessary forms, get financial aid and payment information, and celebrate their enrollment. Students will also be contacted a few days before class begins using the automated phone call system to inform the student of the first day of class date

8 A letter of acceptance will also be sent at the beginning of June to ensure the student knows he / she has been accepted. 11 th Grade Students who have demonstrated an interest in attending GCTC during their senior year in high school will have the same opportunities and activities as the sophomores listed above. The GCTC counselors will work to ensure all High School counselors are aware that 11 th grade students are encouraged to attend with their 10 th grade peers. 12 th Grade Any student who has demonstrated an interest in attending GCTC as an adult student who are currently enrolled as seniors in a partner school will have the opportunity to tour / shadow a program of their choice just as their other high school peers. The interview and information gathered for acceptance will be identical to the 10 th and 11 th graders. However, upon graduation from High School the student will need to provide a copy of their diploma to student services. All graduating seniors are encouraged to take advantage of the Partner School Tuition Waiver Scholarship
