A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN What ensures success in today s rapidly evolving global context? Although there is no straightforward answer, this question is on the mind of every entrepreneur, corporate employee, public officer and member of society. To be successful in today s business world, a person must not only possess the right knowledge and proper skills but also be creative enough to discover and make use of opportunities where others see threats. Business professionals must also be able to leverage developed emotional intelligence to make things happen. In so doing, they must behave in accordance with the principles of ethics and social responsibility. This is central to the philosophy of the Lomonosov Moscow State University Business School. Educating students to be successful and responsible is a complex task that requires a constant focus on excellence and quality. The Lomonosov Moscow State University Business School has always aspired to be a leader in business education, and to be prepared to respond to new challenges and demands. In our view, the more difficult the task, the more opportunities we can find. Similarly, the more ambitious the challenge, the more we can achieve. As a Russian business school, we naturally pay attention to the specific characteristics of doing business in Russia. At the same time, we want all of our students, regardless of whether they are undergraduates or working towards their MBAs, to be competitive in the global context. Our teaching style, therefore, emphasises the development of skills and behaviours appropriate for meeting the world s future demands. One way of doing this is to develop solid international partnerships. We view such partnerships as vital to accomplishing our mission of preparing highly qualified professionals whose eyes are on the future and who act in accordance with world s best ethical practices. Unquestionably, these are the key conditions if our students are to be successful not only in their lives but also in their efforts to help society develop and change the world for better. Professor Oleg S. Vikhanskiy Dean of Lomonosov Moscow State University Business School 1

INTEGRATE The path to success lies in partnerships EMBRACE CHANGE Change faster than the surroundings LOMONOSOV MOSCOW STATE UNIVERSITY BUSINESS SCHOOL Moscow University, one of Russia s oldest institutions of higher education, was established in In 1940, it was named after Mikhail Lomonosov ( ), an outstanding Russian scientist who made a significant contribution to the establishment of the university. The new university campus was built on Vorobievy Gory (Sparrow Hills) in the 1950s. MSU offers training in almost all branches of modern science and the humanities. More than 40,000 graduate and post-graduate students, and about 7,000 undergraduates study at the university, and over 5,000 specialists take MSU refresher courses each year. Research activity is one of MSU s key strengths, and the university is proud to count 11 Nobel Prize winners among its professors and alumni. MSU employs approximately 11,000 academics, more than half of whom are actively involved in research projects in various fields. Moscow State University comprises 40 faculties and schools, 15 research institutes, 23 scientific and applied centres, numerous administrative departments, 4 museums, the Science Park and Incubator, the Botanical Gardens, the Library, the University Publishing House and Printing Shop, a Recreational Centre, and 8 dormitories housing over 12,000 students. As a faculty of Lomonosov Moscow State University, the Business School integrates the academic traditions of MSU with innovative techniques for teaching business and management. The Business School offers a full range of educational programmes: Bachelor of Management, Master of Science in International Business, MBA, Executive MBA and a Doctoral programme (PhD). The programmes are designed to meet the sophisticated needs of modern Russian and foreign students. As a result of its close connections with Russian and multinational companies, the Business School is also able to offer tailor-made corporate programmes. The Business School regularly receives delegations from partner business schools, and provides them with specialised educational programmes and a «Doing Business in Russia» course. Lomonosov MSU Business School is recognised in the business and academic communities as a leader in Russian management education for its: Action-oriented graduates who embrace an enterprise perspective, and lead companies with integrity, vision, balanced judgment, ethical commitment and social responsibility; High-quality, student-centred teaching provided by dedicated full-time, associate and visiting international faculty members, who use a variety of management education technologies, such as cases, team projects and state-of-the-art business simulations; Hands-on experience approach, which allows students to participate in internships, attend master classes held by prominent business leaders, engage in company visits, and take part in career events designed to provide a better understanding of the labour market and to develop career management skills; and On-going management research conducted in collaboration with the school s strategic partner, the Institute for Complex Strategic Studies (ICSS). MISSION AND GOALS The mission of the Lomonosov Moscow State Business School is to be an internationally recognised agent of change in business and society as a school that creates a new way of thinking among its students and opens up broad prospects for them. The Lomonosov MSU Business School s goal is to bolster the art, theory and technology of business and management. By preparing strategically focused, skilful and ethical managers, we hope to contribute to the development of a civilized competitive business reality in Russia and around the world. Business education in Russia has traditionally been based purely on scientific and theoretical grounds. The Lomonosov MSU Business School has shown impressive results using this traditional approach. However, what makes the Business School unique is its ability to integrate this traditional approach with new approaches that view teaching management as a contemporary art of doing business. The Lomonosov MSU Business School is working to accomplish its mission and achieve its goal by providing students with the highest-quality management education possible, an education that is fully aligned with international standards for quality assurance in higher education. This is achieved in several ways. First, all Lomonosov MSU Business School programmes are responsive to the needs of students and employers, as well as the demands of the labour market. Second, the school attracts the best academics in their respective fields, most of whom have personal experience in business or consulting. Third, the Business School sets high entry requirements, which guarantee admission of exceptional candidates. Fourth, all programmes require that students undertake academic study and be involved in related business practice through case studies, group projects and internships. This requirement not only ensures that students attain the necessary skills but also reinforces class discussions, which are centred on students hands-on experiences. 2 3

STRIVE TO DEVELOP See growth as both a tool and a goal PUSH THE LIMITS Recognize opportunities where others see threats BACHELOR OF MANAGEMENT The Bachelor of Management programme provides students with the knowledge and skills they need to identify and solve problems in business and management. It also supports the development of behaviour based on high ethical standards and personal responsibility. After graduation, students of the programme should be ready to begin a successful career in Russian and international companies, or to continue their education on the Master level in Russia or abroad. CORE LIBERAL ARTS, MANAGEMENT KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE As an integral part of a classical university education, liberal arts form the basis of the Bachelor of Management programme, where economics and other social sciences are emphasized. Core professional disciplines are introduced in the first year of study. A highly selective admissions policy and an optimised annual intake of 80 students guarantee an individualised approach for all Lomonosov MSU BS undergraduates. Action-Reflection-Learning, the Business School`s philosophy, is especially relevant in the Bachelor of Management programme. Whenever possible, professors use active teaching methods: practical exercises, case studies, business games and team projects. Undergraduates are provided with an opportunity to test newly acquired management knowledge in field studies and research projects. PRACTICE OF BUSINESS Designed especially for the Bachelor programme, the Practice of Business course is a compulsory part of the curriculum. It starts in the second semester (first year of study) and finishes in the sixth semester (third year of study). Throughout the course, undergraduates work in a real business environment under the guidance of professional managers and consultants. After testing the knowledge and skills they receive through the Lomonosov MSU BS programme in the real world, students come back to class to share and analyse their experiences with their professors and classmates. LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY & INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE A competitive environment requires enhanced communication abilities. The study of foreign languages makes a significant contribution to the development of intercultural communication abilities. In order to strengthen the position of students on the international labour market, the programme includes 990 class hours of English language training during the first two years of study. Students who demonstrate high proficiency in English have the option to study other languages, including Italian, Spanish, German and Japanese. Such studies provide students with language skills that are needed in modern dynamic business affairs. At the end of the fourth semester (second year of study), students must take the IELTS exam to check their English knowledge. To facilitate the study of foreign languages and improve the understanding of cultural differences, Lomonosov MSU BS organises study tours and shortterm educational programs abroad. All students are encouraged to go abroad for a study tour or to spend a semester (or a year) at one of Lomonosov MSU BS s partnering institutions. As of 2011, students entering the programme are required to spend at least one semester abroad. TWO SEMESTERS IN ENGLISH In order to help bachelor students become a valuable part of global business environment and to facilitate the integration of the international students during the third year of the programme, the majority of the courses held during the third and fourth years are taught in English. These courses are taught by visiting professors from the world s leading business schools and universities, and by Lomonosov MSU BS faculty. ACCREDITATION On February 9, 2011, the EPAS Accreditation Board of the European Foundation of Management Development (EFMD) voted to grant EPAS Accreditation to the Lomonosov Moscow State University Graduate School of Business Administration (now the Business School) for its Bachelor of Management programme. The accreditation recognises the high quality of the Business School s teaching methods, its progress in the internationalisation of its bachelor programme and its successful cooperation with the corporate world. The EPAS Accreditation reflects a high international regard for the Business School s extensive efforts in recent years to develop and implement a programme that encompasses the best practices from around the globe. MASTER OF SCIENCE IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS AN AMBITIOUS PROGRAMME The Master of Science in International Business programme is an intensive, full-time programme that attracts ambitious and creative students. The programme aims to prepare students for success in business and management by creating an environment in which students develop essential managerial skills and attitudes, including high standards of ethical behaviour and individual responsibility. Upon graduation, Masters students should be able to start or continue their career in Russian or international companies. The programme provides a strong foundation in general management, which enables students to build upon previous academic studies that might not have included a managerial or economics component. Visiting faculty, an innovative curriculum and Lomonosov MSU BS s international network enable Masters students to further their careers in a truly international environment. The study schedule is designed to meet the needs of modern, young professionals by allowing them to combine classes and work. Students have evening classes two days per week and attend classes at the Business School on Saturdays. INTENSIVE ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL TRAINING The first-year curriculum of the Master of Science programme is intensive. It includes core foundation courses and rigorous English training. These courses serve as a basis for further academic and professional progress. The first year ends with a set of courses on international aspects of business and management, which are taught in English by visiting faculty. The second-year curriculum emphasises professional courses and includes a wide variety of electives. Second-year students deepen their knowledge by working on a research thesis that explores management problem, arisen from their work or internship professional experience. Computer-simulated business games form an integral part of the curriculum. They allow students to apply their knowledge of major business disciplines in a context of virtual company operating in global business environment. In this way, they are able to test their ideas and approaches while competing with other student teams from around the world. DOUBLE-DEGREE PROGRAMME In 2010, the Lomonosov MSU BS introduced an initiative that gives students the opportunity to spend the second year of their Master programme at the St. Andrews School of Management at St. Andrews University (UK). Upon successful completion and presentation of the final paper at St. Andrews, students are awarded with diplomas from both business schools. Admission to the double-degree programme is highly competitive. Eligible students have to demonstrate excellent academic results and English skills (IELTS score of more than 7.5), as well as a strong motivation for studying at St. Andrews. SPECIALISATION IN REAL ESTATE MANAGEMENT In 2011, Lomonosov MSU BS joined a leader in the real estate management market, Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL), to launch a set of elective courses. Over the course of two semesters, participating students take part in about 10 seminars and workshops presented by JLL s top managers. Upon successful completion of the programme, students receive a certificate. INTERNATIONAL TRIPS AND SEMESTER ABROAD As in the Bachelor of Management programme, students in the MSc in International Business programme are encouraged to go abroad for a study tour or a semester of study (third semester) at one of Lomonosov MSU BS s partner institutions. 4 5

AIM FOR STUDENT AND FACULTY EXCELLENCE Succeed in the end but lay the foundation at the beginning WORK AS A TEAM Create synergies THE DOCTORAL PROGRAMME (PhD) Research and the development of knowledge are fundamental dimensions of all Lomonosov MSU Business School programmes. The Doctoral programme is structured to foster academic research in applied economics and management. The programme is intended for candidates with outstanding intellectual abilities and a clear commitment to research. The Doctoral programme covers a minimum of three years. Students take a series of essential courses during the first year of study, and engage in teaching practice during the second and third years. Research activities intended to lead toward the dissertation begin in the first year and continue throughout the course of study. A wide variety of research fields are available to PhD students, including managerial science, strategy, finance, human resource management and organisational behaviour. The limited number of students and the breadth of subjects covered ensure that students receive personal attention and guidance from faculty members throughout their doctoral studies. PhD students are expected to participate in scientific seminars and conferences at MSU, and to present their work at major conferences in their field of study. To obtain a PhD degree cand. of. sci., students must publish at least two articles in leading Russian or foreign peer-reviewed journals. The PhD degree denotes a professional researcher. The awarding of a PhD affects the student s future career and life opportunities in academia or business, as a PhD tells employers that a researcher is capable of spending weeks or months diligently working to discover new explanations based on solid evidence, evaluating alternative approaches and making recommendations. POST-EXPERIENCE PROGRAMMES: MBA/EXECUTIVE MBA EXECUTIVE MBA The Executive MBA is an integrative and stimulating programme that invites students to consider their previous experience, learn from discussions and develop new knowledge. The programme builds on the Lomonosov MSU BS s extensive experience in running different types of MBA and corporate programmes. It aims to implement the Business School s mission by encouraging the establishment of a civilised, competitive business environment in Russia. This programme is for students who have extensive business experience. The student body of the Executive MBA program is composed of business leaders and owners of companies who wish to develop their businesses and participate in new professional networks. The EMBA is a modular program (nine modules during two years of study, including a module abroad conducted with a partner business school). This format makes it perfect for students based outside Moscow or those who travel frequently. ANALYSIS, CREATIVITY AND ACTION The Executive MBA program does not focus on the study of separate disciplines but on the overall vision of competitiveness in the modern, dynamic business context. Intensive sessions at Lomonosov MSU BS help EMBA students to acquire advanced knowledge and new business contacts. Students are encouraged to apply the knowledge and skills they obtain at the Lomonosov MSU BS in their companies. The programme is characterised by extensive discussions with peers and professors with the purpose of finding solutions to the problems various companies face. Homework assignments are designed to deepen knowledge of functional disciplines and to sharpen analytical skills, thereby ensuring that sessions held at the Lomonosov MSU BS are as efficient as possible. In the second year of study, EMBA students undertake a research project. This project addresses the most important management issues confronting one of the key organisational subsystems (strategy, finance, marketing or human resources) within their companies. RESULTS EMBA students research projects are expected to generate practical solutions. When new organisational changes occur in students home companies as a result of their final research projects, Lomonosov MSU BS is proud to claim that main objectives of the educational process have been achieved. Despite their different work experience and diverse backgrounds, MBA and EMBA students at Lomonosov Moscow State University Business School share one essential trait a willingness to develop themselves. Lomonosov Moscow State University Business School pursues its mission to educate students by creating a stimulating environment in which students can not only acquire and develop managerial skills and knowledge, but also re-evaluate their experiences and basic assumptions to create a new mindset. The Business School aims to develop ethical business leaders who are able and willing to make a positive impact on their companies. The teaching language of both the MBA and Executive MBA programmes is Russian. MBA The MBA programme is a general management programme for students who have at least two years of managerial experience. The main goal of the program is to allow students broaden their professional horizons and realise their full career potential. The MBA programme has two formats. In the first, students attend evening classes twice per week and participate in one full day of classes on the weekends. In the second, students take nine modules, each lasting eight or nine days. The programme is supplemented by distance learning and is designed to increase students qualifications without interrupting their careers. rapidly changing business environments and to meet new challenges, regardless of whether they are pursuing a career in manufacturing, commercial and financial services, consultancy or the public sector. The Lomonosov MSU Business School also runs a specialised MBA programme in Operations Management. At the end of the program, MBA students present their diploma theses, which can be a summary of a professional project, a business plan or market research. Typically, the diploma thesis is related to the professional activity of the individual MBA student. This final important step allows students to strengthen their analytical abilities, and to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have acquired at the Lomonosov MSU BS. 6 A DEMANDING WORKLOAD The program curriculum includes compulsory foundation, management and change management modules. A wide range of electives is also available. The curriculum is constantly reviewed and updated to ensure that students will be able to cope with 7

SEEK OPPORTUNITIES Meaningful changes occur on the periphery of vision DIFFERENTIATE Create value and work towards success by daring to differ CORPORATE RELATIONS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Cooperation with corporations is one of the priority areas in the Lomonosov MSU Business School s development strategy. From year to year, the Business School expands the number of corporate partners and establishes new synergetic connections. The Lomonosov MSU BS actively considers every possibility to provide its students and alumni with best practices in education, excellent skills and outstanding professional experience. For this reason, the Business School s corporate relations are not limited only to student internships but are evident in several types of activities. INTERNSHIPS The cornerstone of corporate relations is the internship spaces offered by partners companies to students in the Bachelor and Master programmes. Companies of different sizes from start-ups to large international and Russian corporations host student internships in various functional areas, including marketing and sales, human resource management, financial administration and accounting, and IT management. The main purposes of internships are to provide students with a secure environment in which to test their abilities, and to define paths to personal and career development. At the same time, internships allow Lomonosov MSU BS to monitor the development of essential competencies, skills and knowledge among its students. THE LOMONOSOV MSU BS CAREER CENTRE The Lomonosov MSU BS Career Centre manages career events and annual meetings with human resource managers. The first Career Week was held at Lomonosov MSU BS in April 2010, during which top managers and HR managers of the leading Russian and international companies discussed career opportunities in the various industries and professional areas with students, and provided practical advice on job application procedures and career development. The Career Centre has also organised annual Career Days since 2007, at which 20 to 30 companies present job and internship opportunities. Career Days conclude with moderated workshops with HR managers from participating companies with the objective of obtaining their feedback on the quality of the students and graduates, and their suggestions for how the Lomonosov MSU BS can improve its corporate relations. CAREER MANAGEMENT COURSE A career management course is taken during the fourth (last) year of study in the Bachelor programme, and is specifically designed to support students in their career and in determining a professional orientation. Throughout the course, career coaches, experts from recruitment agencies and HR managers from large companies discuss the importance of the careerplanning process, present labour market overviews, and train students in resume writing and interviewing. COMPANY REPRESENTATIVE PARTICIPATION IN THE EVALUATION OF FINAL RESEARCH PAPER PRESENTATIONS In its desire to make the educational process as transparent for the corporate sector as possible, Lomonosov MSU BS introduced a new format for presentations of qualifying research papers in Corporate representatives are part of the evaluation committees and their opinions are key to assessing the practical value of students research projects. The new format allows Lomonosov MSU BS to present the integrated results of the programmes and their teaching philosophy to the corporate world, to confirm the high standards of the educational process, and to obtain immediate feedback from corporate representatives on the quality of the graduates. A SERIES OF SUCCESS STORIES WORKSHOPS Monthly master classes allow students to meet with managers and owners of leading Russian and international companies to discuss topical business issues, and to obtain a better understanding of their professional and career perspectives. Since 2009, almost half of the master classes, which are held in the evening to allow for wider participation, have been organised in co-operation with the Student Project of The Moscow Times. This partnership benefits the visibility of the workshops. 8 CAMPUS The main Lomonosov Moscow State University building was designed by architect Lev Vladimirovich Rudnev. In the post-war era, Stalin ordered that seven huge, tiered neoclassic towers be built around the city. The main MSU building is the largest of these. It was the tallest building in the world outside of New York City at the time of its construction (1953), and it remained the tallest building in Europe until The central tower is 240 metres tall and 36 stories high, and is flanked by four huge wings of student and faculty accommodations. It is said to contain a total of 33 kilometres of corridors and 5,000 rooms Facilities available inside the building include: a concert hall, a theatre, a museum, various administration services, a library, a swimming pool, a police station, a post office, a laundry, a hairdresser, several canteens, bank offices and ATMs, shops and cafes. Along with the university administration, four of the university s main faculties the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, the Faculty of Geology, the Faculty of Geography, and the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts are housed in the Main building. The star on the top of the tower, which weighs 12 tons, is large enough to include a small room and a viewing platform. The building's facades are decorated with giant clocks, barometers, thermometers, statues, carved wheat sheaves and Soviet crests (recently renovated). The front of the building includes a terrace featuring statues of students gazing optimistically and confidently into the future. On campus, students will find all that a modern town or city can offer. Also there are few libraries and different sports facilities available for students such as football and basketball stadiums, athletic arena, and tennis courts. As the campus provides students with all of the goods and services they might need, student life is quite comfortable. The Lomonosov MSU Business School occupies two facilities at the main MSU campus on Vorobievy Gory (Sparrow Hills) in south-western Moscow. The main classroom and administrative building was constructed in 2001 using donations from the Japanese government to MSU. A third building, located in the historic centre of Moscow, is mainly used for the EMBA programme, guest lectures and scientific seminars. The bachelor, master and MBA programmes make use of the two facilities on the main MSU campus. The two buildings have a total of 14 classrooms (including two computer rooms), two student study rooms, two faculty meeting rooms, programme and school management facilities, a cafeteria and a recreation areas for students. All classrooms are equipped with multimedia projectors, portable computers and flip charts. Student study rooms are equipped with computers, Internet connections, and multifunction copiers and printers. Free Wi-Fi connections are available throughout the buildings. Student dormitories, available to students who permanently reside outside of Moscow, are located in the MSU main building, which is less than a 10-minute walk from the Business School s facilities. 12
