God The Bible is a book mainly about God. The word God is used more than 4000 times in the Bible. The word God is translated as 神 in Japanese. Discussion Question What do you think of when you hear the word kami? What words come to your mind? What sorts of pictures come to your mind? First, in your Journal, take a few minutes to write down some thoughts or draw a few pictures that describe kami for you. Then discuss your thoughts and ideas with other students and the teacher. Jewish and Christian beliefs about God are found in the Bible. As you read the Bible, you may find out things about God that are interesting, confusing, comforting and sometimes shocking. Here are a few things the Bible says about God: There is only one God. Read Isaiah 46: And don't forget the many times I clearly told you what was going to happen in the future. For I am God-I only-and there is no other like me 10 who can tell you what is going to happen. All I say will come to pass, for I do whatever I wish. This God is not a big human being, but totally different. Read Isaiah 55:8-9 and Numbers 23:19: 8 "This plan of mine is not what you would work out, neither are my thoughts the same as yours! 9 For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than yours, and my thoughts than yours. Num 23:18 God is not a man, that he should lie; He doesn't change his mind like humans do. God is the creator of all things. Read Nehemiah 9:6:

6 Then Ezra prayed, "You alone are God. You have made the skies and the heavens, the earth and the seas, and everything in them. You preserve it all; and all the angels of heaven worship you. God is invisible, and cannot be symbolized by animals or other things in nature. Read Psalms 115:2-8: 2 Why let the nations say, "Their God is dead!" 3 For he is in the heavens and does as he wishes. 4 Their gods are merely manmade things of silver and of gold. 5 They can't talk or see, despite their eyes and mouths! 6 Nor can they hear, nor smell, 7 nor use their hands or feet, nor speak! 8 And those who make and worship them are just as foolish as their idols are. The Judeo-Christian God is best understood as a Father. Read Isaiah 64:8 and Matthew 6:6-13: Isa 64:8-9 8 And yet, O Lord, you are our Father. We are the clay and you are the Potter. We are all formed by your hand. 9 Oh, be not so angry with us, Lord, nor forever remember our sins. Oh, look and see that we are all your people. Matt 6:6-7 6 But when you pray, go away by yourself, all alone, and shut the door behind you and pray to your Father secretly, and your Father, who knows your secrets, will reward you. 7 "Don't recite the same prayer over and over as the heathen do, who think prayers are answered only by repeating them again and again. Remember, your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask him! Jews and Christians believe that this God loves everyone. Read Psalms 145:8-9 (page 749). 8 Jehovah is kind and merciful, slow to get angry, full of love. 9 He is good to everyone, and his compassion is intertwined with everything he does.

The God of Jewish and Christian thought is the God who acts. The Bible is the story of God s involvement in creation and in the lives of people. God acts in history to bring people into a right relationship with God and with each other. Reflections In your Journal, consider the following questions: What is love? What do people do when they love each other? What do you think about a God that loves everyone and everything? What do you think when you hear that this God loves you? When you hear that God is a Father, how does that make you feel? If a person cannot symbolize the true God using plants, animals, or people (the Bible calls these idols ), how then can we describe God? The Bible says that God created all things. What do you think about that? In the Jewish and Christian religions, there is only one God. What are your feelings about this?

Creation Most cultures and religions have stories about how the world was created. These are all attempts to answer questions such as, Who am I? Where did I come from? Who made me? Before looking at the biblical account of how the world was made, let s look at a couple of creation stories from other cultures and religions. The first is a Creation Myth from the Ainu People in Hokkaido: The Floating World N THE BEGINNING, the world was nothing but a swamp. The water and the earth were all mixed up and there was nothing but a bog. Nothing could live there. But in the six skies above and in the six worlds below lived gods, demons, and animals. In the foggy and hanging skies of the lower heavens, the demons lived. In the star-bearing and high skies of the clouds lived the lesser gods. In the skies of the most high lived Kamui, the creator god, and his servants. His realm was surrounded by a mighty metal wall and the only entrance was through an iron gate. Kamui made this world as a vast round ocean, resting on the backbone of an enormous trout. This fish sucks in the ocean and spits it out again to make the tides; when it moves it causes earthquakes. One day, Kamui looked down on the watery world, and decided to make something of it. He sent down a water wagtail to do the work. When the poor bird arrived and saw the mess everything was in, it did not know what to do. However, by fluttering over the waters with its wings and by trampling the mud with its feet and beating it with its tail, the wagtail at last created patches of dry land. In this way, islands were raised to float upon the ocean in this, the floating world. Even today, the faithful wagtail is still carrying on its work, still beating the ground with its tail. When Kamui created the world, the Devil tried to thwart him. One morning, the Devil got up and lay in wait to with his mouth opened wide

to swallow the sun. But Kamui sent a crow to fly down the Devil s throat to make him choke and cough. That is why the crow is such a bold bird. Because a crow once saved the world, all crows think they can do what they like, even stealing people s food. When the animals who lived in the heavens saw how beautiful the world was, they begged Kamui to let them go and live on it, and he did. But Kamui also made many other creatures especially for the world. The first people, the Ainu, had bodies made of earth, hair of chickweed, and spines made from the sticks of willow. That is why when we grow old, our backs become bent. Kamui send Aioina, the god-man, down from heaven to teach the Ainu how to hunt and to cook. When Aioina returned to heaven after living among people and teaching them many things, the gods all held their noses and cried, What a terrible smell of humans! They sniffed and sniffed to find out where the stink was coming from. At last, they found out that the smell was coming from Aioina s clothes. The gods sent him back to earth, and refused to let him back into heaven until he left all his clothes behind. Down in the floating world, Aioina s sandals turned into the first squirrels. The next creation myth comes from Babylon. Babylon was a great empire thousands of years ago. It is where the country of Iraq is today. This myth, called the Enuma Elish, is very old. It was lost for hundreds of years, and was only rediscovered about 100 years ago. It was a very long poem that was read on a special religious day in the Babylon. Because the poem is so long, only a summary of the story is provided here.

Enuma Elish (From on High) Long ago, before heaven and earth were formed, there were two vast bodies of water. The male freshwater ocean was called Apsu and the female saltwater ocean was called Tiamat. Through the fusion of their waters, many gods were born. Younger gods were born when the older gods had sex with each other. The younger gods were noisy, and disturbed Apsu s peace of mind, so Apsu devised a plan to kill all of them. The wisest of the younger gods, Ea, found out about the plan and killed Apsu. To avenge her husband, Tiamat decided to destroy the younger gods with the help of her henchman Kingu. When the younger gods heard about this, they looked for a warrior who would protect them. They found a champion in the god Marduk. But he agreed to defend them only if they would make him king. After they tested his powers, they made him the King of the Gods. Marduk searched for Tiamat. When finally they met on the field of battle, Tiamat opened her considerable mouth as if to swallow Marduk and plunge him into the immeasurable deeps. Marduk rallied by casting one of the winds into her body, expanding her like a balloon. He then took his bow and shot an arrow into her belly, splitting her in half. Marduk cut her in two like a clam, and out of her carcass he made the heavens. The "clamshell" of heaven became a barrier to keep the waters from escaping. Marduk also took the other half of Tiamat s body, and used it to create the moon and stars in the heavens. These formed day and night as well as the seasons. Then Marduk devised a plan to relieve the boring and hard work of the

gods. The gods were tired of working to meet their daily needs, so he created humanity out of the blood of Kingu to be the slaves of the gods. In appreciation for their deliverance, the gods built Marduk a palace in Babylon, called Esagila, meaning "house with its head in heaven." There, Marduk sat enthroned. Now read Genesis chapters 1 and 2 (pages 2 4). This is the creation story that Jews, Muslims and Christians believe. After you read, compare the creation stories with the two others that you have just read. Questions What was the universe like before the earth was created? What is the name of the creator? What is the creator like? The Floating World Enuma Elish Genesis 1 & 2 What is the order of creation? How was the world created?

How were man and woman created? What is the role of man and woman on earth? What does the story explain about life?

Scientists tell us that the world is millions of years old. The Bible does not tell us exactly how or when the world was created, but it does tell us who created it. It also says that everything God made was very good. Reflection In your Journal, please answer the following questions: What were your impressions after reading the three different creation stories? What are the differences and similarities with the Genesis story and your study of the beginning of the universe in science? According to the Genesis story, consider the following questions 1. Who are you? 2. Where did you come from? 3. What are you created to do?
