3 Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1

4 Description of the School Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves? BridgePrep Academy of Village Green is a tuition free charter school within the Miami-Dade County Public School District, which is the fourth largest school district in the nation. Charter schools are public schools that operate under contracts which are free from some of the requirements governing traditional public schools. Charters are designed to deliver programs tailored for educational excellence and to the needs of the communities they serve. BridgePrep Academy of Village Green is committed to providing students and the community with educational excellence--a focus on students' individual needs, an environment that promotes high levels of achievement, and a strong homeschool connection. The school operates on three basic principles: choice, accountability and freedom. It gives families the opportunity to choose their child's school; it emphasizes academic success; and it places the school's energy and resources to ensuring educational excellence. The fact that parents have a choice to attend either BridgePrep Academy or their neighborhood school ensures that the school works hard to provide a top quality education that will attract families. BridgePrep Academy of Village Green is located in the southwestern area of Miami, Florida. The school stands on ten acres of land, in an established, middle-class neighborhood on the fringes of the urban spread. The school is in the midst of a densely populated area. Village Green is a community in Miami Dade County with great schools and a melting pot of people with a great deal of pride in their community. The population surrounding the Village Green consists primarily of Hispanics of all different nationalities. BridgePrep Academy enjoys a diverse demographic landscape. It is the diversity that makes school strong, but it is also the diversity that brings one of the hardest challenges to the school. Most of the children come from dual income, blue collar families where the parents speak little or no English. The parents are unable to provide the assistance that the children need when doing their home learning assignments. Therefore, home learning becomes a challenge. Since the majority of parents speak little or no English, 100% of the teachers are bilingual. As a result, communication with parents is strong. This leads to increased support for the school from the home and helps meet the unique needs of BridgePrep Academy as a bilingual school. The school day is extended for an additional 30 minutes each day to ensure that each student receive an hour of instruction in Spanish each day. A second challenge faced by BridgePrep Academy of Village Green is the lack of facility space needed to offer students such resources as a media center, art room, or science lab. The school is very resourceful, however, and works to ensure that students receive access to media, instructional technology, and other services through resources like a mobile computer cart, Smart Boards, and classroom computers. BridgePrep Academy of Village Green serves approximately 190 students from kindergarten through fifth grade. The ethnic make-up of the student body is comparable to the surrounding community as follows: 0% Asian, 2% Black, 98% Hispanic and 0% White. The percentage of students who are English Language Learners is very high with 25% of students participating in the school's ESOL program. The ESE population is smaller. Only 1% of the students have active Individual Education Plans (IEPs). The Economically Disadvantaged population is 26% of the student body with 12% of students receiving free lunch and 14% receiving reduced lunch. The school has 12 full-time instructional staff members, four part-time instructional members, a principal, and an ESE Specialist. The clerical staff consists of an office manager and two part time receptionists. There are three after school care counselors. There are two part-time custodians, three part-time security monitors and a cafeteria manager. Page 2

The mission and the purpose of BridgePrep Academy of Village Green is to develop the whole child. The school seeks to nurture every student's potential, academically and socially. School stakeholders and leaders believe in a student-centered education, in which the student is an active participant in his/her learning experience. BridgePrep Academy believes every child learns best in a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment where high academic expectations, self-esteem, good character, and an appreciation for the arts are promoted. Its vision is to provide a challenging academic curriculum that will encompass an enriched Spanish language program, and provide students with a technology-enhanced education that will enable students to be prepared for the 21st century. BridgePrep Academy's goal is to educate well-rounded individuals and enable students to reach their maximum potential. BridgePrep Academy embodies its purpose and direction through its beliefs and actions. School leaders and staff believe in using technology in the classroom to enhance lessons and prepare students for secondary education, college, and careers. At Village Green, students are using different computer programs. Kindergarten and first grade students are using Ticket to Read. Ticket to Read is a selfpaced, student-centered online program that results in improved reading performance. Students in second through fifth grade are using Achieve Achieve 3000 is a program that believes the key to unlocking the potential of all learners is literacy. By reaching and teaching all kids at their individual reading levels, and constantly challenging them to achieve the next level of success, teachers are making literacy breakthroughs every day. As students complete tasks in the areas of foundational skills, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, they earn points that can be used to decorate their personal clubhouse or stock their toy store. Students are also using IXL from kindergarten through fifth grade. IXL is a web-based program that targets MATH for all grades K-12 with problems based on the common core standards. The math problems have a wide variety of question types, from word problems to interactive graphing. The school leaders at BridgePrep Academy of Village Green believe in implementing a strong, challenging curriculum, through which all students can access a great education. The school believes in setting high standards for both staff and students. Leaders promote a culture among all stakeholders that "all students can learn." The school believes that every student possesses the ability to think critically, learn and understand information, and solve complex problems - and that students should spend their time engaged primarily in these kinds of activities. Students and teachers collaborate with school projects. Students are assigned monthly book reports and monthly projects pertaining to the subject they are learning. As previously mentioned, BridgePrep Academy of Village Green implements a bilingual curriculum through which all students are required to take Spanish as part of their classes. The students are taught how to read, write, and speak Spanish. All students take one hour of Spanish per day. The school employs two full time Spanish Teachers. General education teachers work in teams of two and are departmentalized, one teaching Language Arts and Writing and the other teaching Math, Science and Social Studies. The teachers also differentiate instruction in an attempt to accommodate the learning needs of all students. Through departmentalization, common planning, and a continual review of student data to differentiate instruction, teachers get to know their students and are able to provide individualized instruction. BridgePrep Academy implements a very effective Response to Intervention (RTI) process which is a method used to provide early, systematic intervention for students who are having difficulty learning, or those who are demonstrating behavioral or emotional problems that Page 4

7 impede them from learning and excelling. Students who score 50% or less on standardized achievement assessments, such as the Florida Assessment of Instruction in Reading (FAIR), mid-year benchmark tests, SAT, FCAT/FSA, are placed in Tier II of the RTI process. Students in third to fifth grades are served in small groups by an interventionist for thirty minutes every day. The curriculum for RtI is a research-based program called Wonder Works. Students in kindergarten through second grade are pulled for small group instruction by their homeroom teachers. BridgePrep establishes high expectations for all of its students, and it provides students with services to meet those high expectations. BridgePrep complies with all district, state and federal laws. BridgePrep provides Exceptional Student Education (ESE) students, 504-eligible students, and English Language Learners (ELL) with services to ensure that all students can access their education and receive equitable instruction. Students who qualify for gifted services are also provided with an educational program that meets their needs. Beyond the rigor of the curriculum and high expectations, BridgePrep provides extracurricular activities, through which students can explore their interests. The school also provides enrichment programs such as soccer, cheerleading, basketball, and cross country. Page 5

BridgePrep Academy of Village Green is proud of the achievements it has experienced in the last three years. In the spring of 2014, BridgePrep Academy met the criteria for the first time to earn a school grade, and it received a school grade of "A" for school performance--a notable accomplishment! The percentage of students achieving proficiency levels in reading, math, writing, and science exceeded the performance of students in the schools in the surrounding communities. BridgePrep Academy of Village Green continually assesses its performance and effectiveness, and it identifies areas for improvement each year. In the next three years BridgePrep Academy of Village Green will transition into a K-8 Center. The school will also transfer to a larger facility which will provide all students with increased opportunities to showcase their areas of growth as well as their interests. The school will need to ensure that it provides a rigorous curriculum for middle school students. Also, it will need to focus on preparing students for secondary school and beyond. Page 6

School Curriculum BridgePrep Academy of Village Green follows the standards and objectives stated in the Language Arts Florida Standards (LAFS), Mathematics Florida Standards (MAFS), and the Science and Social Studies Next Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS). The curriculum encompasses the core subject areas of English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. In addition, it offers one hour of Spanish daily in addition to Art, Music, and Physical Education. In the subject of English Language Arts, Reading Wonders (McGraw-Hill) is utilized as the core text. In Mathematics, Go Math! Florida Common Core Edition (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) is used. For science, Science Fusion Florida Edition (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt) is used. For social studies, Time for Kids magazine is being used. For Spanish, the core text titled, Muy Bien! is used. Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) BridgePrep Academy of Village Green personnel provide a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) for students designed to maximize each individual student's academic potential. These supports include opportunities for remediation and academic support through targeted interventions as well as for acceleration through participation in classes. Intervention Academic support intervention is intended as a resource for educators to assist in integrating academic and behavior supports and services for all students. The MTSS model for instruction and intervention is based on the principle that academic and behavioral supports are first provided at a core or universal level to effectively address the needs of all students in a school (referred to as Tier I). However, not all students respond to the same curricula and teaching strategies. As a result, some students with identified needs will receive supplemental or targeted instruction and intervention at Tier II. Finally, at Tier III, a few students with the most severe needs will receive the most intensive and individualized behavioral and/or academic support. Gifted Program The BridgePrep Academy gifted program offers acceleration and enrichment for gifted students. Project-based learning is encouraged to build organizational skills and to stimulate the students' minds. The aim of the gifted program is to teach the standards with in-depth knowledge of the topic while challenging the students in the process. The school envisions that this program will assist students in fostering a love for science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. STEAM At BridgePrep Academy of Village Green, the STEAM curriculum is infused throughout the day. Students are exposed to an interdisciplinary curriculum that includes Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM). The curriculum addresses multiple intelligences and individual learning styles to meet the diverse needs in the 21st century. Students are challenged with project-based activities and real world connections and practitioners throughout each academy of study. The curriculum emphasizes Science and Technology, interpreted through Engineering and the Arts, all based in Mathematical elements.
