2 Relevance of paper and its importance to business Annually, 20 million tonnes of paper are used in Germany, outweighing the Eiffel Tower twice! Producing paper requires a significant amount of natural resources such as wood or waste paper and water. Paper producing industries in Germany use about 2% of the total energy requirements about as much as the entire financial services sector. 2

4 Environmental arguments for using recycled paper Companies can significantly improve their environmental footprint by using recycled paper. Using recycled paper saves about 60% of the water and energy required to produce virgin fiber paper. Fibers can be re-used multiple times, protecting forests and biodiversity. Environmental life-cycle assessments by the Federal German Environmental Agency (UBA, 2000) and the IFEU-institute in Heidelberg (2006) prove that recycled paper is better than virgin fiber paper in every environmental aspect. This generally also applies to printing magazines and brochures! 4

5 Environmental arguments for using recycled paper The certification label Blauer Engel (Blue Angel) not only guarantees significant environmental savings, it also labels best available quality for office and printing paper. Paper with a Blauer Engel certification Contains 100% recycled paper with at least 65% low-grade waste paper Is produced without using chlorine, optical brighteners, halogenated bleach as well as several other chemicals 5

7 Blauer Engel certified paper is the first choice! The Blauer Engel certification includes resource origin, environmental and health aspects during production, as well as fitness for purpose. FSC certified recycled paper only includes the origin of resources. Production processes and fitness for purpose are not tested. The EU environmental label also only considers certain parameters during the production process. Both the EU environmental label as well as the Nordic Swan are also awarded to virgin fiber paper, not just to recycled paper. 7

8 Blauer Engel certified paper is the first choice! In 2006, the German Federal Environmental Ministry, the German Federal Environmental Agency, FSC Germany, the Jury Umweltzeichen and the Initiative Pro Recyclingpapier issued a joint press release, confirming that the Blauer Engel certification is the environmental label with the most stringent requirements. Original quotes (translated): The environmental label Blauer Engel requires high environmental standards to be fulfilled and is therefore the most environmental choice for end users and procurement managers when it comes to paper. Environmental criteria for the Blauer Engel label are benchmark criteria. They are being continuously improved and guarantee best available environmental and health protection, as well as a high level of sustainability. 8

(From a HP printer manual) In principle all RICOH systems work well with recycled paper according to DIN EN (Environmental information) If you want to use recycled paper, we recommend high-quality paper that meets the criteria of the Blauer Engel certication (RAL UZ 14). 12

13 Qualitative arguments for using recycled paper Dust formation Low-quality trimmed edges lead to increased dust formation. This largely depends on the processing quality and not on the paper that was cut. Recycled paper with a Blauer Engel certification allows for high quality processing. Color printing Principally, Blauer Engel certified recycled paper is fade-proof and suited for color printing in office environments according to DIN EN Nevertheless, optimal results can only be achieved when printers, ink and paper all work together well. 13

14 Financial arguments for using recycled paper Like virgin fiber paper, the price of recycled paper with Blauer Engel certification is subject to normal market fluctuations. Generally: Paper with a high degree of whiteness is more expensive, as only certain types of recycled paper can be used. In Germany, high-quality recycled paper with a degree of whiteness of 80 or lower is generally cheaper than virgin fiber paper and also meets customers environmental expectations. 14
