2 missions feature 1 missions feature 2 God Is Love Skype Ministry Scripture: John 3:16 Introduce Roy and Jinky Twaddell using the sheet with their photo and ministry description. God Is Love Written in Farsi is an activity sheet for children to draw or trace the Farsi characters. An Introduction to Islam shares the basic beliefs of Muslims and provides a better understanding of our Christian outreach in the Middle East. Share photos of people involved in this ministry. The top photo shows Roy Twaddell with a home group in England and the group on the bottom is in the US. Scripture: Using a concordance or an Internet Bible search, select a few of the many references that include the word proclaim. These verses talk about proclaiming good news, the gospel, the kingdom of God, the Messiah, Jesus Christ. One of the tools used by our Middle East Ministries for proclaiming the good news is the Internet. Skype connects people involved in this ministry and is used effectively for teaching and fellowship. Share photo sheet 2 that illustrates the use of Skype as a ministry tool. Ask children to make up a discussion about how they might talk about Jesus to someone in Iran. Prayer: That Roy and Jinky would be able to reach more Muslims with the love of Christ. Prayer: That more Iranians would hear the gospel through the Internet.

3 missions feature 3 missions feature 4 The Qashqa i The Laborers are Few Scripture: Matthew 28 Introduce the Qashqa i people using Profile of the Qashqa i. The three coloring sheets can be used to illustrate the profile of this people group. The Qashqa i Picture Story is another way to share this lesson. Share photo sheet 3 with a picture of the Qashqa i in their homeland (top) and the other two pictures are of Qashqa i believers in Germany who are part of the Twaddells ministry. Scripture: Luke 10 Share photo sheet 4. The bottom photo shows three Friends leaders who guide home groups in Germany and England. The top photo is of young people from Bolivia who want to become missionaries and are learning about outreach to Muslims. Use the bookmark sheet as a prayer activity. Fold the sheet in half (one sheet for every three children). Have the children cut the bookmark using the line on the back. On the inside help them write a prayer for people involved in outreach to Muslims or a prayer for laborers in the harvest fields. Prayer: For the Qashqa i to become followers of Jesus, especially for the nomads who live in tents. Prayer: For the Lord of the harvest to send more workers to the unreached Muslims.

8 Roy and Jinky Twaddell are active in taking the gospel to people from the Middle East. Through the Twaddells ministry the unreached have heard the gospel, churches have been planted, and leaders trained. With a continuing need for more workers in the Middle East, the Twaddells are now concentrating their efforts on training those workers. To do this the Twaddells, in cooperation with Evangelical Friends Mission and Evangelical Friends Yearly Meetings, assist local commmunities to reach out and plant churches among people from the many Middle East countries. They then recruit, train, and send out workers from these communities, sending them locally and internationally. The Twaddells will continue to encourage and provide training and logistical support for current leaders in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Middle East, and the United States. 10 An Introduction to Islam Roy and Jinky Twadell are missionaries with Evangelical Friends Mission. Their ministry is with people who are from cultures where Islam is the most common religion. There are more than one billion people who follow the religion of Islam. These people are commonly called Muslims. The largest number of Muslims is in Indonesia. In the United States there are 4 million Muslims. About 20% of all Muslims live in the Middle East. Founded in the 7th century A.D., Islamic fundamental beliefs include angels, the revealed books and scriptures, a series of prophets, and a Last Day (Judgment). Muslim duties include five daily prayers, a welfare tax called zakat, fasting (during the month of Ramadan), and a pilgrimage (hajj) to Mecca; these four elements plus the profession of faith are called the Five Pillars. The pillars of Islam are required of all Muslims. [Teaching Note: Have kids compare and contrast the practices above with what Christians practice.] Shahada Witness Salat Prayer Zakat Alms Sawm Fasting Hajj Pilgrimage In Arabic La ilah ha il Allah, Muhammadan Rasul-Allah is translated: (There is) no God but Allah (and) Muhammad is His Messenger or, There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is His Apostle. Performing daily prayers is an act of communication between humans and God. Five daily prayers are considered a duty for all Muslims and on these occasions preparations in ritual purity are required. The zakat is a form of giving to those who are less fortunate. It is obligatory upon all Muslims to give 2.5 % of wealth and assets each year (in excess of what is otherwise required) to the poor. Another form of offering thanks to God is fasting. It is a duty to all Muslims to fast during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan. During this month, Muslims refrain from food and drink during daylight: before sunrise to just after sunset. Exceptions are those with ill health, pregnant women, and travelers. The breaking of the fast is a joyous occasion. Sawm during Ramadan or any time is recognized as physically demanding but spiritually rewarding. The pilgrimage season begins in the tenth month, the month following Ramadan, and lasts through the middle of twelfth month, Dhu al-hijja. This fifth pillar requires Muslims to travel to Saudi Arabia to visit the Holy Sites of Islam. COMMUNICATING CHRIST IN FARSI 1C

14 Profile of the Qashqa i LOCATION The Qashqa i of lran are Turkic-speaking pastoral nomads who Iive in the harsh deserts and Zagros mountains of southwestern lran. This people group has been extremely isolated with their twice annual migration miles from summer to winter pastures. Winter pastures range from 1,000-5,000 feet in elevation, while summer pastures reach up to 12,000 feet. Most Qashqa i migrate twice a year, but some are beginning to live in cities like Shiraz. HISTORY The Qashqa i began entering lran from central Asia in the 11th century A.D. The Qashqa i name means those of a horse with a white-starred forehead or those who fled. LANGUAGE The Qashqa i language is unwritten. Many of the Qashqa i can speak in Farsi which is the national language of lran. But they refer to themselves as Turks. CUSTOMS Their nomadic way of life is primarily supported by their sheep and goats and selling wool, cheese, and other dairy products. Camels and donkeys are kept by some and they carry the tents and other gear during migration. The women make distinctive carpets for their own use and to sell. They are also known for their colorful floral-pattern dresses. The men wear two-eared hats. RELIGION The Qashqa i are Shi ite Muslims. However, they have little use for organized religion beyond political purposes and few are practicing Muslims. They do follow Muslim traditions for marriage and death. COMMUNICATING CHRIST IN FARSI QASHQA I PROFILE area where Qashqa i nomads live CHRISTIANITY There are now a few Christians, underground house churches, and only parts of Bibles, but it has taken many years for this to happen. What does God have in store for the future?
