10 WHAT TO CHOOS FROM CERAMIC TILES Ceramic tiles are lightweight and clay based. They are pressed at a lower pressure rate and fired at a lower temperature to that of porcelain tiles. This manufacturing process means that they are always finished with a durable glaze (matt or gloss) that carries the colour and pattern. 10

11 PORCELAIN TILES Porcelain tiles are made using very fine, high quality materials with high silica content. Pressed at a high rate and fired at high temperatures, they are typically much less porous than other tiles and do not always require sealing. Porcelain tiles can either be glazed with gloss, matt or textured finishes and unglazed porcelain tiles can result in a natural, polished or textured finish. To provide a great range of choice, National Tiles offers, in most cases, multiple finishes for each range. Both glazed and unglazed porcelain tiles are extremely durable, making them suitable for any application. WHAT IS THE BASIC DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CERAMIC AND PORCELAIN TILES? Both ceramic and porcelain tiles are produced in the same way but the difference can be attributed to the pressing and firing process which renders the porcelain tile a stronger product. CERAMIC TILES are always finished with a durable glaze which carries the colour and pattern. These tiles are used in both wall and floor tile applications, are generally softer and easier to cut than porcelain. Ceramic tiles are traditionally suitable for very light to moderate foot traffic areas within the home. PORCELAIN TILES are popular due to their superior strength, design and beauty. Porcelain tiles can be used in any application, internal and external which means you can get the same look and feel throughout your home. Porcelain tiles usually have a much lower water absorption rate (less than 0.5%) than non porcelain tiles making them frost resistant. 11

12 MOSAIC TILES Mosaic tiles are very small tiles, typically less than 100mm square and are most commonly known as splashback tiles due to their popularity as a finish for kitchen and bathroom splashbacks. They are available in many different materials including porcelain, ceramic, glass or natural stone, just to name a few. The finishes available will also vary and depend upon the material used. Mosaics are used generally as a feature tile to enhance a room. They add character without being overpowering or they can be designed as a bold statement reflecting your personality and style preferences. 13 NATURAL STONE The production of natural stone differs to that of porcelain or ceramic tiles. The intention with porcelain and ceramic tiles is to take the raw material (clay and silica) and process it into a new controlled material. Natural stone is a sourced material, with every effort made to preserve as much of its natural appearance, including naturally occurring faults. Natural stone gives any interior a touch of style and refinement. The polished finishes add formality to a space whilst a honed finish provides a more organic aesthetic. Natural stone must be maintained to ensure that it continues to look as it did the day it was installed and it is possible to have your stone floor resurfaced in years to come. BORDER TILES Like mosaics, border tiles can be manufactured from almost any material including glass, porcelain and ceramic. National Tiles has a range of border tiles - 200x600mm. Border tiles are a cost effective way of adding a feature to a tiled area such as a kitchen splash back or shower recess and can be used as a capping tile when only tiling part way up a wall. 13

14 TILE FINISHES When selecting your floor tiles, the finish is an important factor to consider. Different finishes can change the look and feel of your home and it s important that they remain practical in each space. Selecting your tiles based on your lifestyle choices, how you use each space and taking into consideration children and pets will ensure you have the best outcome and lasting value. POLISHED/GLOSS FINISH With polished or gloss finishes you can create a feeling of grandeur and give a space that hotel vibe. Gloss or polished tiles lend themselves more to the classic resort style, however, if you have chosen a contemporary or designer feel, there are also some great options to choose from. Generally, these tiles can be more slippery in wet areas than a matt finish. MATT/NATURAL FINISH Create an earthy feel with warm toned matt tiles or get a design edge with cooler, raw tiles such as concrete look. You will find a great range of matt and natural tiles in all four themes of the Porter Davis World of Style collection. The practical benefits of matt finished tiles are that they are less slippery in wet areas. 14

15 TILE SHAPES Square is the traditional tile shape, accented by a contrasting grout to highlight the shape or blended with the tile colour to create a seamless finish. Rectangular tiles are increasingly popular, especially when it comes to walls. Rectangular tiles can be laid horizontally, vertically or as a distinctive pattern, giving a unique look. Geometric shapes and patterns have become a highly valued option, including on-trend styles such as hexagon and honeycomb, which have become a feature used to create an exclusive and stylish feel. TILE SIZES National Tiles have a great range of tile sizes, including 300x300mm, 450x450mm, 600x600mm for floors and 100x300mm, 250x333mm and 300x600 for walls, plus many more. When choosing floor tiles, think about the size of the room and how you can make the area look larger. By using a large tile in a large space, such as a 600x600mm, you can often achieve this effect. However, it is important to consider that you may create the opposite effect by using large format tiles in a small space. 15

16 LAY TYPES The three most common ways to lay tiles are: STACKED OR STRAIGHT LAY DIAMOND LAY BRICKBOND * Please note: If you are laying a diamond or brickbond pattern this will incur an extra charge, due to the complexity of the labour involved.
