4 Choosing one of Minnesota s Private Colleges THE FACTS A liberal arts education from one of Minnesota s 17 private colleges and universities broadens horizons, sharpens communication and decision-making skills and equips students for participating in work and society. Here are some good reasons you should consider one of our colleges or universities. Students and Degrees In fall 2014, Minnesota s Private Colleges enrolled 58,761 students. Minnesota s Private Colleges award about 30% of the state s four-year degrees. For a listing of which colleges have certain majors, check out the majors grid on pages or search our College Finder tool at Our share of degrees for specific areas of study: 46% of all physical science degrees 45% of all nursing degrees 40% of all foreign language degrees 37% of all biological science degrees 36% of all mathematics and statistics degrees 32% of all business degrees 33% of all visual and performing arts degrees 20% of all education degrees (many future teachers from our colleges do not major in education but complete a liberal arts major in the field of their choice) Excellence Minnesota s Private Colleges are committed to undergraduate teaching with: One professor for every 12 students 60% of classes with fewer than 20 students and 99% with fewer than 50 students Courses taught by highly qualified faculty 84% of full-time faculty hold doctorates or other terminal degrees 65% of private college students graduate within four years the best rate in Minnesota and the Midwest. We asked graduates of Minnesota s private colleges and universities about their college experience and compared the results with national public universities in a six-state area. Our alumni reported that: Compared to the public university students, they experienced stronger levels of faculty interaction, tied to smaller class sizes, classes taught by professors and personal interaction with faculty. They had higher levels of academic involvement (internships, off-campus study and research and tutoring) than students at regional national public universities and national highly selective private colleges. They were highly satisfied with their education. They believed their education prepared them well for life and career, through the development of writing skills, leadership, moral principles and a sense of purpose in life. 2 Minnesota s Private Colleges Transfer Guide

5 Access and Diversity In 2014, nearly 3,000 students transfered to one of Minnesota s Private Colleges; 29% of all new students on campus are transfer students. 18% of our students are first-generation college students, meaning that they are the first in their family to go to college. In the fall of 2014, 21% of new entering students were students of color. More than 7,300 undergraduate students of color, excluding international students, enroll at Minnesota s Private Colleges. FINANCIAL AID We want prospective students and their families to know that ability, motivation and values are more important than their bank balance. Most students and their families are surprised to learn that: More than 25% of private college students come from families with incomes below $40,000 about the same proportion as at the state s public four-year colleges and universities. 94% of our first-year students receive grants and scholarships that don t have to be paid back. Our institutions provide more than $523 million in institutional grants and scholarships each year. Thanks to financial aid, the average amount that families actually pay for tuition is considerably less than the posted price about half. Grants, scholarships, low-interest loans and work-study opportunities are available at private colleges to help cover tuition, fees, room and board, books and miscellaneous expenses. See list of all tuition and fees at Transfer scholarships are available based on leadership and academic achievements and vary by campus. Please contact the college admissions offices to obtain application requirements and scholarship deadlines. Student financial aid programs sponsored by the federal government include: Federal Pell Grant Program Federal Stafford Student Loan Program Perkins Loan Program The State of Minnesota also helps students through: The Minnesota State Grant Program College Work Study Student Educational Loan Fund (SELF) Don t assume you can t afford a private college. Talk to a transfer representative from any of our 17 private colleges to find out how affordable a private college education can be. Contact information can be found on college profile pages. 3
