Course content includes psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive, and humanistic perspectives and examines contributions of major theorists from each school, key theoretical points from each perspective, and critiques of the value (and the limitations) of each theory. Course Scope This course provides an overview of research, theory and practice related to human personality development.
2 Course Objectives In completion of this course, the student will: 1. Examine the major theories of human personality 2. Compare methods of research used to study personality development 3. Examine the impact of cultural differences on the formation of personality 4. Analyze the relationship between personality and the concepts of love and hate 5. Identify characteristics of abnormal personality development 6. Apply a theory of personality to personal life experiences and orientations Course Delivery Method This course delivered via distance learning enables students to complete academic work completely online. Online assignments include classroom dialogs accomplished in groups through threaded forums, examinations, and a paper assignment. Course Materials Required Textbook:
3 Friedman, H. S. & Schustack, M. W. (2012). Personality: Classic theories and modern research, 5 th Ed. Allyn & Bacon: Heights, MA TEXTBOOK NOTE: This course uses a Vital Source textbook. Evaluation Procedures and Written in this course require reading and synthesis of and response to classroom content. The formal paper assignments must be submitted in MSWord (.doc or.docx, not.wps or.wpd) and must be the student s original work (in his/her own words with NO COPYING from the textbook, Internet sources or any other published materials), and must include proper source crediting in both the paper body and an attached References page for any paraphrasing or quotes of published authors work, the latter of which, quotes, should be used VERY sparingly. The majority of the writing must be paraphrasing (restating what one reads in one s own words). Excessive quoting will result in significant point loss. Course instructors need to assess students grasp of concepts and see evidence that they know the meaning of the authors ideas and how they apply to course concepts rather than an ability to assemble numerous quotes.
4 Collaboration on coursework, unless so assigned by the course instructor, is not allowed. Quizzes: Students will complete 5 quizzes over the course of the semester. Quizzes will be based on specified textbook chapters. They are open book, but will require careful analysis of chapter content because while some questions will reference direct statements and definitions in the textbook, others will call for more careful reading, synthesis of material and application of critical thinking skills. Forums: Participation in forums is required for this course. Each forum requires one original post with a minimum of 500 words, unless otherwise instructed, and three (3) substantive replies with a minimum of 350 words to the postings of other classmates. Replies must include the name of the fellow student being replied to and the specifics of his or her post that motivated the reply, and include related thoughts and insights of the student replying. The initial post is due by Wednesday and replies to classmates are due by Sunday at the end of each scheduled forum week. Forums are academic dialogs in which informal instant messaging style language or casual socializing should be avoided along with personal opinion unless the latter is instructed by the course instructor. The Learning Reflection Journal requires weekly learning experience reflection across Weeks 2, 3, 5 6 and 7 and a Week 7 End of Journal Summary compilation of the reflections into a single document concluding with two substantive summary paragraphs 500 hundred words in length combined. My Personality Theory Paper: Each student will write a 4 to 5 page paper, not including the Title and Reference pages, describing a personality theory from the course that s/he believes best describes how s/he developed his/her personality and relating it to his/her personal life experience. Instructions for this assignment are located on the classroom page.
5 Theory Review Paper: For this assignment you will write a paper 4 to 5 pages in length, not including required cover and Reference pages comparing and contrasting two personality theories from the course. You are free to select from among the several theories covered in the course to date but only two theories may be used. Instructions for this assignment are located on the classroom page. Final Exam: The comprehensive, open book Final Exam is located in the Tests & Quizzes page in the classroom. This test is not proctored or timed. Students will have from Monday, when the exam opens, until the following Sunday of its scheduled week to complete and submit it. 9 Policies WRITING EXPECTATIONS All assignment work must be submitted in the following format: Typewritten in double line-spaced format, with the exception of forum posts which should be single line-spaced. Arial or Times New Roman, size 12 font. Discussions on the Internet, however, can occasionally degenerate into needless insults and flaming and other critical comments. Such activity and the loss of good manners, as evidenced by the use of informal text message writing style, lazy grammar/spelling or profane language, are not acceptable in a university setting--basic academic rules of good behavior and proper Netiquette in this academic environment must persist. Remember that the classroom is a place for enjoyment and excitement of learning that does not include descent into personal attacks, critiques of others work (this is the responsibility of the instructor) or attempts to stifle the expressions of others perspectives.
