1 OOSTBURG CHRISTIAN SCHOOL 3rd GRADE CURRICULUM GOALS, OBJECTIVES AND SCOPE AND SEQUENCE The Goal of Christian Education The primary goal of Christian education consists of helping each student to grow into an independent person so that he/she can serve God according to His Word and is able and willing to employ all his/her talents to the honor of God and for the well being of his/her fellow creatures, in every area of life in which he/she is placed by God. The Objectives of Christian Education 1. To deepen his/her relationship with and commitment to love God. 2. To develop the knowledge and understanding necessary for fulfilling his/her calling effectively in modern society. 3. To discover and develop particular gifts and talents. 4. To train and discipline those skills and attitudes necessary for satisfaction and productively in work and/or advanced levels of schooling. 5. To develop awareness of him/herself as a learner able to adapt knowledge, skills, and attitudes to the ordinary tasks of life. 6. To acquire competence for responsible living as an adult; especially the sensitivity and skill necessary for effective communication. 7. To follow the norms for good health and physical fitness. 8. To develop abilities of perception and judgment in moral and ethical matters. 9. To mature as a Christian person in relation to self, others, and the environment. 10. To acquire appreciation for the customs, habits, and beliefs of other Christian faith communities, ethnic groups, and other cultures. Art Goals 1. Visual Awareness-Learn to look around our world and see the beauty of our Creator. 2. Perceptual Sensitivity-Learn to feel with other senses the mood and movement of a person, event, or place. 3. Design Consciousness-Begin to identify the basic shapes and forms in the world around us. 4. Aesthetic Appreciation-Enjoy the beauty God has given to us. 5. Art Verbalization-Recognize-Learn to talk about art, sharing our appreciation. 6. Visual Expression-Recognize and utilize art as a way of communicating our ideas and feelings. 7. Creativity-Experience the creativity God has given us to invent and solve problems. 8. Craftsmanship-Developing new skills and techniques. 9. Visual Discrimination-Learn to evaluate and make art judgments comparing work with earlier work or different styles of artists. 1

Develop in each child a knowledge and understanding of sin, salvation, and service. 3. Develop in each child a knowledge and understanding of the history and culture of the Old and New Testament. 4. Help each child hold God s Word in his/her heart through memorizing key Bible passages. 5. Help each child apply this learning to his/her daily life. 6. Equip each child to demonstrate his/her faith through a life of praise, gratitude, and service. 7. Help each child recognize the joy and comfort in knowing that everything belongs to God. Bible Scope and Sequence 1. In the Beginning: God s creation-sin s effect-god s plan to restore relationship 2. Abraham and Isaac-God s covenant with Abram, renewed with Isaac 3. Jacob and Joseph-God furthered His plan using events for good. Through Christ, God would bless the world through Jacob s family. 4. The Exodus-Israelites brought out of Egypt. God s promise to Abraham fulfilled by making the people into a great nation. 5. God s Law-God gave his people laws to guide them and to reveal more about Himself. 6. Forty Years in the Wilderness-God s provision for the people and his intolerance of sin continued. 7. The Promised Land-God gave the Israelites victories through their obedience in Him. God s covenant is renewed. 8. The Judges-Cycle of the Israelites turning from God and being graciously received back after their repentance. 9. Ruth-God s faithfulness throughout generations. Text Book: Christian Schools International Language Arts Goals 1. To appreciate their "native tongue" and the ability to handle it well in keeping with Scriptural directives. 2. To recognize that speech is an expression of ourselves, which can be used for good and evil. 3. To understand that good communication glorifies God; and that through good communication we express ourselves more completely as God's image bearers. 4. To understand that the misuse and abuse of language can open the doors to Satan's deceptions. 2

5 Math Scope and Sequence 1. Number Sense and Numeration-instilling an understanding of numbers as a gift of God which helps us serve and honor Him. 2. Concepts of Whole Number Operations-acquiring an understanding of numbers in daily living. 3. Whole Number Computation-addition, subtraction, multiplication, and divisionachieving mastery in the use of the four fundamental processes. 4. Fractions and Decimals-developing an understanding of a part of a whole number. 5. Money-Learning the value of U.S. coins as a foundation for good stewardship. 6. Geometry and Spatial Relationships-developing an understanding of line segments, shapes and angles. 7. Measurement-time and calendar, temperature, linear measure, weight, capacity, perimeter, area, and volume 8. Data Analysis and Statistics-bar graph, line graph, pictograph, tallies, and surveys 9. Probability-the likelihood and fairness of an event or game 10. Algebra and Functions-using symbols, expressions Text book: Saxon Physical Education Goals 1. Each of us is a divinely-created creature who is soul and body, a conscious personal being and a biological one. The body is a priceless possession for the Christian. Students should learn that their bodies are important. 2. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. God gives us physical attributes (talents), and we must care for those just as much as our intellectual and spiritual ones. The care of our bodies is our decisional responsibility and part of our reasonable service to God. 3. Each of us is an organic whole. Education through the physical is not only possible but necessary! Because children learn by precept and practice, one task in physical education is to see that children understand and practice such values as personal integrity, cooperation, self-respect, responsibility, and persistence. 4. Creative: Developing and maintaining health fitness and motor proficiency. Students will care for their bodies (health fitness) and will use human movement (motor proficiency) to most efficiently and meaningfully serve God and humanity. 5. Intellectual: Understanding the human organism in action. True thankfulness to God should be the result of understanding how our bodies are created and maintained. 6. Decisional: Developing the ability to make decisions about fitness, sport, and recreational pursuits and about Christian personal and social conduct. Reading/ Literature Goals 1. To be able to break words apart (decode) and put words together (encode) to get the meaning of new words. 2. To use context to gain comprehension. 3. To develop listening skills to gain comprehension. 4. To be able to identify main ideas, sub points, and details in a selection. 5. To understand the authors purpose and be able to critique the selection. 5

6 6. To develop oral reading skills so they might share with others the delight of reading. 7. To enjoy reading. 8. To begin to distinguish between different types of literature. 9. To develop the ability to write so others may enjoy reading. 10. To be able to read and understand the Word of God. 11. To increase vocabulary. 12. To increase knowledge of God's world.
