York Health and Wellbeing Board Engagement on the Joint Health & Wellbeing Strategy Renewing York s Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy

York Health and Wellbeing Board Engagement on the Joint Health & Wellbeing Strategy Setting the Scene York Health and Wellbeing Board are currently renewing their Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy. This is currently at a very early stage and they would like to hear your views and ideas on what should be included. The slides in the rest of this presentation explain more about what a Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy is and the process we will use for renewing it. You can have your say by completing the online survey accompanying this presentation.

What is the Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy? The Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy is an important piece of work for Health and Wellbeing Boards. It should set out the health and wellbeing issues and needs that we want to address, our priorities for the coming years and what we will do to achieve them.

York s Current Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy Runs from As well as a number of cross-cutting themes, principles and actions It has five key themes: Making York a great place for older people to live Reducing health inequalities Improving mental health and intervening early Enabling all children to have the best start in life Creating a financially sustainable local health and wellbeing system

York Health and Wellbeing Board Engagement on the Joint Health & Wellbeing Strategy What do we know about health and wellbeing in York?

Health of the Population of York People living in York enjoy a good quality of life overall. The city has a population of just over 204,000 and over 8 out of 10 people say they are in good or very good health Good or v. Good (84%) 84 Fair (12%) Bad or v. Bad (4%)

Population Growth (over 65s) 2014 MYE. (65+) 2025 Est. (65+) 36,459 43,800 By 2025 it is estimated that the 65+ population in York will have increased by a fifth 2014 MYE (85+) 5, Est. (85+) 7,300 By 2025 it is estimated that the 85+ population in York will have increased by about two fifths

Population Growth (0-19) pop'n 44, est pop'n 48,300 The 0-19 population is projected to rise by about 9% by 2025

Health Inequalities Some people in York will not live as long as others. Some of the people living in the more deprived areas of York will not live as long as some of the people living in the least deprived wards The main causes of this gap are: Circulatory disease Cancers Respiratory diseases Digestive diseases

Health Inequalities These are some of the things that can effect how long you live Individual Risk Factors Smoking Alcohol Physical Inactivity Healthy Eating Mental Wellbeing Environmental Risk Factors Air Quality Housing Poverty Employment

Challenges There are significant challenges faced by the whole of the health and social care system: Financial pressures Integration of health and social care Early Intervention and Prevention Shift in culture/reduction in dependency on statutory services

York Health and Wellbeing Board Engagement on the Joint Health & Wellbeing Strategy Renewing the Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy for York

How Will We Renew the Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy for the City? We will use a variety of data sources and local knowledge such as: Local knowledge, intelligence and data York s Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) Ward Profiles Feedback from engagement with stakeholders and residents

Vision The very first draft of a vision for the new Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy is: To make York the best place for all residents to be born, grow up, live, work and grow old in

What we Propose The proposal is for a 5 year Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy ( ) based on a life course approach with a focus on preventing ill health It will be a short, high level Strategy underpinned by targeted action plans

A Life Course Approach What is a life course approach? A life course approach takes into consideration both physical and social factors in a person s life covering all stages from birth, through childhood, adolescence, working age and older age and how this impacts on health and wellbeing outcomes Starting & Growing Well Living & Working Well Ageing Well Dying Well Cross-cutting themes

Starting & Growing Well Starting & Growing Well Ambition: That York is a great place to be born and grow up The first 1001 days (including pregnancy) of a child s life are crucial. Children s emotional health and wellbeing is very important as is that of their families. Childhood and young adulthood is a period of transition with many physical and emotional changes that can influence health and wellbeing. Student health is an important issue for York. There are approximately 20,000 students in York and their health and wellbeing needs can be complex.

Starting & Growing Well Starting and Growing Well Examples of Inequalities in York

Living & Working Well Living and Working Well Ambition: That York is a great place to live and work Support people to make healthy life choices to offer a range of support to help residents make good choices about their own health and wellbeing and to make appropriate use of the health and social care system Increase community resilience to work together with local people and organisations to develop self reliant and resilient communities York has a high rate of employment and we need to encourage more York employers to sign up to the Workplace Wellbeing Charter and promote employee health and wellbeing

Living & Working Well Living & Working Well Examples of Inequalities There are 4 wards in York that account for almost half of the total long term unemployed in York

Ageing Well Ageing Well Ambition: That York is a great place to grow old An increasing ageing population - We have an increasingly ageing population and we need to support them to stay fit, healthy and independent for longer Choice and Control we need to enable older residents to have choice and control in relation to their own health and wellbeing A responsive care workforce that enables the system to meet the demographic challenges ahead

Ageing Well Ageing Well Examples of Inequalities

Dying Well Dying Well Ambition: That York is a good place to die All individuals, their families and carers experience good end of life care Individuals are supported to plan for their last days

York Health and Wellbeing Board Engagement on the Joint Health & Wellbeing Strategy Please tell us your views by completing the online survey. Your views and comments will be used to develop the new Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategy for York. Thank You
