GypLyner IWL Gyproc GypLyner IWL independent wall lining is a lightweight, non-loadbearing dry internal lining which is erected independently of the external wall construction. The system is used in all types of building, but is particularly suitable for those with reinforced concrete or steel frames. The lining provides fire resistance to structural steel sections clad with lightweight metal sheeting, and can also be used in association with new or existing masonry walls to increase sound insulation and meet thermal performance requirements. 1 Gyproc GypLyner IWL is based on a Gyproc I stud framework lined with Gyproc plasterboard. Gyproc C studs are used at abutments, junctions, and openings. Isover Steel Frame Infill Batts are included in the stud cavity to provide a high standard of thermal and sound insulation. The lining can protect structural steel columns either within the cavity or by encasement, and will accommodate service ducts and penetrations. Key facts Choice of framing sizes to suit range of performance requirements Fully independent wall lining Compatable with external wall constructions including curtain walling, rain screen claddings, industrial claddings, brickwork and glazed atriums Satisfies BS 534 strength and robustness requirements up to Severe Duty Provides fire protection to structural steelwork 1 Provides fire resistance in association with external structure Can be used to upgrade the sound resistance and thermal insulation Provides service void 1 Gypframe 'I' Stud Gypframe Floor & Ceiling Channel Sector Guide Offices Commercial Retail Sport & Leisure Education Healthcare Industrial Auditoria Custodial Entertainment Residential - Housing Residential - Apartments Residential - High Rise 36

INSTALLATION OVERVIEW Run of lining Gypframe Floor & Ceiling Channel is fixed at the head and base. Gypframe I Studs are friction-fitted vertically withinthe channel sections to form the framework. This allows for adjustment during boarding. If specified, Isover Steel Frame Infill Batts (SF) are fitted between studs. Additional framing is installed as required to support heavy fixtures. Boards are screw-fixed to all framing members to form the lining. Horizontal board-end joints should be backed with Gypframe GFS1 Fixing Strap or Gypframe GFT1 Fixing T. For full installation details, refer to the Installation Guide at 38

T F E enquiries@gyproc.ie PERFORMANCE Environmental Gyproc GypLyner IWL is unsuitable for use in areas subject to continuously damp or humid conditions. Plasterboards are not suitable for use in temperatures above 49ºC but can be subjected to freezing conditions without risk of damage. Fire protection For reaction to fire classifications for Gyproc and Glasroc boards please refer to Section.1. Fire resistance The fire resistances given in Tables 4 and 6 are for imperforate walls tested to BS 476: Part 8: 197 or BS 476: Part : 1987 or assessments based on these tests. Gyproc GypLyner IWL will provide up to 10 minutes fire protection to structural steel dependent upon the lining specification and steel section factor. Table 5 gives the fire resistance levels for different configurations. Table Maximum heights 1 based on Gyproc studs at 600mm centres Gyproc I studs 1.5mm boards 15mm boards single double single double I I I I I I Refer to DESIGN section for further guidance. Refer to Tables 4 and 6 for duty ratings. 3 For heights over 400mm, Deep Flange Gyproc Floor and Ceiling Channel (DC) should be used at the head and base. Sound insulation The R w ratings given in Table 6 are for imperforate walls and have been tested in accordance with BS EN ISO 140-3: 1995, and rated in accordance with BS EN ISO 717-1: The external wall is constructed from 103mm LBC common brick and 50mm Isover Steel Frame Infill Batts (SF) was included in the stud cavity. The brick wall without the lining system gave an R w of 45dB. Gyproc GypLyner IWL can be used as an independent lining to improve the sound insulation of new or existing masonry walls. Due to the independence of the lining system from the external walling, the flanking transmission of sound is minimised and therefore lightweight imperforate abutting partitions will not suffer a consequent loss of performance. Duty rating strength and robustness The duty ratings given in Tables 4 and 6 are based on tests carried out on metal stud dry linings in accordance with BS 534: Parts 1 & : 199. The rating is a measure of the ability of the wall lining to meet the requirements of four strength and robustness tests: door slam, soft body impact, hard body impact, and stiffness. Grades, e.g. Medium Duty, relate to the level of activity in adjacent areas and the degree of care likely to be exercised in them. The requirements are for walls complete with their surface finishes where these are part of the wall specification. Other optional tests may also apply. Using the duty of a particular wall the designer can select a wall for its area of use (with due consideration for fire, sound, or thermal requirements). 39

Any variations in the specifications should be checked with Gypsum Industries. The fire resistance quoted is that provided by the masonry wall without contribution from the lining. 3 Board joints must be reinforced with Gyproc Paper Joint Tape for the quoted fire resistance periods to be achieved. Please refer to section for full details. 4 For further information on duty grades, refer to Gyproc GypWall PERFORMANCE.. DESIGN Planning key factors It is important that all parts of the lining system, including the thermal insulation, should remain independent of the external walling. The lining is erected with the external walling in place and the windows and doors fixed. The lining is positioned so that a 30mm minimum gap is left between the back of the insulation and the external walling to provide a continuous cavity. In most cases this will be achieved by positioning the internal flange of the floor and ceiling channels 30mm plus the thickness of insulation from the external wall. This dimension and the board thickness will determine the width of the reveals. Maximum heights The criteria to determine the recommended maximum partition heights given in Table are based on a limiting deflection of L/40 at 00Pa, together with criteria within BS 534: Parts 1 & : 199. Greater heights can be achieved under different criteria. Contact the Technical Sales Department. For heights over 400mm, Deep Flange Gyproc Floor and Ceiling Channels (DC) should be used at the head and base. Where the wall height exceeds the available length of I stud, sections of stud can be spliced together to the required length using 600mm lengths of the appropriate floor and ceiling channel with four Gyproc Wafer Head Drywall Screws in each flange to each side. (See Figure ) 41

Cavity barriers Cavity barriers should be included where necessary. Please refer to section 3.9 for more information. Bracing If maximum heights are exceeded the lining will need to be braced back to the external wall. Contact the Technical Sales Department. Deflection heads The system can accommodate deflection at the head with suitable detailing incorporating deep flange (DC) or extra deep flange (EDC) channels. Contact the Technical Sales Department for guidance. Condensation In refurbishment projects, where damp or rain penetration may exist, normal corrective measures, such as a new damp course, tanking, or external wall coating, should be taken prior to the installation of the dry internal lining. If this is not possible, the cavity between the external walling and the lining system will need to be ventilated to the outside which may result in a loss of thermal performance. In this situation specify a Duplex board lining (although in double layer linings Duplex need only be specified as the face layer). Insulation Isover Steel Frame Infill Batts (SF) are inserted to a friction fit within the stud cavity. The slabs are self-supporting, receiving internal support from the stud flanges, except where 50mm insulation is fitted into 9 I 90 studs. In this case a 150mm x 50mm strip of Isover Steel Frame Infill Batts (SF) is inserted to retain the slab (see Fig 5). With 146 I 90, strips of Isover Steel Frame Infill Batts (SF) will need to be inserted to retain the slab. Cavity drainage In the ventilated cavity condition with a permeable external wall lining, there will be a possibility of moisture penetration to the inside face of the external wall. Accordingly, suitable detailing is necessary at the head of the openings and wall/floor junctions to ensure that any such moisture is drained back to the outside, and not allowed to come into contact with any part of the lining system (see Fig 3 and Fig 5). Lining durability Where there is a requirement for a more durable lining Gyproc Duraline board may be used. Thermal performance Uncontrolled air movement through the drylining cavity can result in excessive heat loss from the building. When the perimeter of the cavity is to be sealed by the drylining contractor the recommended method is to apply a continuous fillet of Gyproc Compound or Gyproc Sealant to the perimeter of the external wall and around any openings. The designer should also specify a method of restricting air movement around the perimeter of suspended timber floors, such as the provision of a flexible seal between the floor and walls. 4

T F E enquiries@gyproc.ie Services The stud cut-outs can be used for services provided that there is no undue disturbance of the insulation (See Fig 1 for the positioning of cut-outs, and Table 6 for sizes). Both horizontal and vertical ducting can be included behind the lining system, and accessed via a fire-rated access panel (see Fig 8). Refer to section 8.4 Gyproc Profilex Access Panels. Surface mounted trunking should be located against the plasterboard lining, and fixed through the lining to the stud framework. Any interruptions in the lining integrity will downgrade its structural performance. Services should be installed in accordance with all available standards, guidelines and recommendations. Fig 1 Service cut-outs cutouts at 600mm centres thereafter Fixtures The system can carry the range of fixtures normally present in buildings such as hospitals, schools, and offices. Heating and other horizontal service installations should be supported from the floor or fixed through the board linings into the studs or into Gyproc Fixing Channel..5 Ceramic tiling Ceramic tiles up to 1.5mm thick with a maximum weight of 3 kg/m, can be applied using thin bed adhesives (usually 3mm thick). Stud centres will require closing down to 400mm centres with additional mid-height supports from the framework to the structure. Refer to section.3 - Ceramic tiling. Board finishing Refer to section Finishing Coat Plasters, section. - Jointing, and section.5 - Decorative effects. Estimating The estimated construction time is 3m / man hour (single layer lining) or m / man hour (double layer lining) ready for finishing. 1500mm size of service cutouts dependent upon type and width of stud Fig I stud splicing detail 900mm 300mm Gyproc I Studs spliced with 600mm length of Gyproc floor channel, twice fixed with Gyproc Wafer Head Drywall Screws* to top and bottom studs on both flanges of I Stud (8 No. fixings in total). *If the metal gauge is over 0.8mm thick, Gyproc Wafer Head Jack-Point Screws must be used Table 6 Cut-out dimensions Gyproc stud Cut-out... 48mm stud 30mm x 75mm 60, 70, 9 & 146mm stud 38mm x 75mm... 43
