Education and dissemination of Science: challenges and perspectives University Industry collaboration, Technology Enterpreneurship Roberto A Lotufo Inova Unicamp 1o. Encontro Preparatório Forum Mundial da Ciência 2013 FAPESP, 29 a 31 de agosto de 2012
University and Economic Development To compete globaly, technology companies need to be in knowledge-rich regions with a concentration of research, entrepreneurship and infrastructure for innovation. World-class research universities have a major economic impact on their surrounding areas.
New Businesses from Science It is likely that new industries are created based on intense knowledge: > New sources of energy, agribusiness, environment, aerospace, pharmaceutical, biotech, telemedicine, nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, electronic games, information technology, communication, education, etc.. Need to be close to world-class universities Can be created by our students, supervised by professors
Technology Transfer brief timeline Some patent licensing in US and European universities; not widespread 1980: Bayh-Dole Act in US begins acceleration of tech transfer, and competence builds in tech transfer offices Early 1990 s: Many US universities acquire competence; emphasis on spinouts begin; European government begins increased emphasis on technology transfer, particularly spinouts
Late 1990 s early 2000: Japan and Taiwan pass Bayh-Dole-like Acts. Singapore, Hong Kong, Germany, Finland, Brazil, China, South Africa, and many other countries begin or strengthen their systems for technology transfer from their universities and research institutes. 2005: Interest in technology transfer is global. Countries look to technologies developed at their universities for economic development in the Knowledge Economy

NSF Innovation Corps Program The I-Corps curriculum provides real-world, hands-on, immersive learning about what it takes to successfully transfer knowledge into products and processes that benefit society. It's not about how to write a research paper, business plan, or NSF proposal. The end result is not a publication or a deck of slides or even a scientific discovery. Instead the entire team will be engaged with industry, talking to customers, partner, and competitors to create successful innovations.
Harvard Business School i-lab Field Course: Commercializing Science Students are selected from Harvard's schools of business, medicine, science, engineering, law, public health, government, and teaching hospitals. The focus is on inventing breakthroughs, working with other professions such as science, medicine, and law, and moving research from the lab to the market place.
Field Course: Commercializing Science Educational Objectives Managerial insights to increase the chances that your organization will invent a breakthrough. An understanding of today's increasingly complex innovative landscape. Hands-on experience - as a member of a multidisciplinary team - in the development of sciencebased technologies such as genomics, nanotechnology, information technology, and photonics.
Entrepreneurship and Higher Education. Stimulating innovative and growth-oriented entrepreneurship is a key economic and societal challenge to which universities and colleges have much to contribute. Higher education institutions are engaged in this role through promoting entrepreneurship and transferring knowledge and innovation to enterprises
Entrepreneurship and Higher Education. Entrepreneurship engagement is a rapidly expanding and evolving aspect of higher education that requires proper support and development.
