1 SECONDARY SCHOOL MARKING AND PRESENTATION POLICY January 2016

2 Marking and Presentation Policy Purpose This Policy is an overview of the quality expectations in relation to assessment marking and presentation. Every department, and on occasion, subject within a department has their own bespoke policy which is set out in the departmental handbook. Therefore the actual documental/annotations etc will be different; however, the guiding principles must be adhered to. MARKING At the British School of Barcelona we believe that work should be marked carefully and consistently to further a child s development in any curriculum area. The marking and presentation policy and accompanying guidelines have been devised to ensure that: All work is acknowledged and marked appropriately to the task. The child understands that her/his work is valued by the teacher. Marking criteria are clear to the child and the teacher. Marking is fair and consistent throughout the school. Marking is meaningful for each individual. Marking is purposeful. There is appropriate, constructive feedback; the child understands what the teacher is saying about his/her work, and will respond to this feedback in writing using a purple pen. Guidance for future development is given, sometimes in the form of a target. Children s work is presented to a consistently high standard. Teachers expect children to produce work which is of a high quality. Work is marked as quickly as possible.

3 ENGLISH AND ALL OTHER WRITTEN WORK SPEAKING AND LISTENING Oral comments to the child or group. READING - Oral comments to the child WRITING ACROSS THE CURRICULUM The specific focus for marking should be made clear to the children at the start of the writing task. Work should be commented on orally and/or written at various stages of the writing. Comments should be as positive as possible and should clearly identify what the child needs to improve. Meaningful comments will refer to: The Learning Objective Punctuation Grammar / Use of language Presentation Spelling Drafting procedures Purpose of writing Content Sentence / paragraph construction Depth and Synthesis of Knowledge Ability to make connections between concepts in order to develop arguments Targets about how to improve in the future Identify a particular area that needs to be focused on over time.

4 NON-WRITTEN WORK MATHEMATICS Children MUST be taught how to set out their work. Date in left hand corner of the page No more than one digit to a square All underlining in ruler Pencil or Pen as instructed by the teacher Working in columns down the page When marking, comments should be positive and appropriate to the age of child. Comments may be made on layout, use of rules, legibility of figures etc. OTHER NON-WRITTEN WORK Illustrations and diagrams comments on accuracy, relevance, labeling, care and presentation. Art, Technology, Music, PE etc oral comments, and notes to be made as appropriate. PRESENTATION this will vary by department but the quality expectations remain the same. The First two pages at the beginning of every exercise book will be ruled in half length ways to form a two column table with the title CONTENTS PAGE. The left hand column will be labeled Topic & Page Number and the right hand column will be titled Teacher comments. The students will draw this table up at the beginning of every exercise book they are given in every subject and complete the first column as the course progresses. Each page in the exercise book will be numbered and the Topic name and pages numbers entered onto the contents page by the student. The teachers will then mark the work as normal and give written comments in the second column of the contents page. Art and Music have separate feedback sheets due to the nature of the assessments undertaken. The Presentation and Personal Targets page will be stuck inside the front cover of every exercise book. Please see accompanying paperwork. Date all work In the Left Margin MFL may use longer date titles to practice vocabulary As children begin to use HEADINGS and SUB-HEADINGS these MUST be underlined with a ruler.

5 All work will be done in Black Pen unless the subject teacher gives a different instruction. For self correction, the child may use a pencil eraser. Work in pen should be crossed out with ONE line through the centre. Liquid Tippex MUST NOT be used by children. Tippex mice may be used. Correct use of margins should be taught and encouraged. A ruler MUST be used. Diagrams should be drawn in pencil and lines to labels should be drawn with a ruler in pencil, unless directed otherwise by the teacher. Mathematics work should be completed in pencil or pen as instructed by the teacher. Children SHOULD NOT use felt pens for drawing or for colouring their work in books. (Other than a teacher directed task). Colouring pencils or wax crayons only! All work on paper, should be carefully filed or stuck in the appropriate book. Rough / draft work to be completed in the appropriate draft / note book. Children should be encouraged to acknowledge and respond to teacher s comments. E.g. complete unfinished work.
