How to take care of your health in your travel

PRESENTATION The Ministry of Health introduces the Traveler s Health Guide, a publication especially prepared for those traveling for pleasure or business in Brazil or abroad. It contains practical tips, essential information and useful advice that will help protect your health and make your trip much more pleasant and smooth. For more information, please access the traveler s health link and have a pleasant trip.

PREVENT YOURSELF! INFORM YOURSELF! Find out more about your travel destination. Check out for disease risk, need for vaccination or other preventive measures. Avoid traveling while acutely ill, e.g. flu. If you are on continuous medication, please remember to bring a sufficient quantity of the drug for your trip. Look for a health service, preferably 4-8 weeks before your travel, and request guidance on the care needed. Update your vaccination card.

PREVENT YOURSELF! VACCINES International travel may require the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (CIVP), which certifies vaccination against yellow fever. Check out at the traveler s health website countries that make this requirement. This vaccine should be taken at least 10 days before the trip. YELLOW FEVER AND MALARIA Take the vaccine 10 days prior to engaging in fishing in rivers, ecological, rural or adventure tourism or visiting forest areas. If traveling to malaria-transmitting locations, wear clothes that cover the body well, avoid contact with river banks and ponds after sunset and use mosquito netting. IN CASE OF FEVER, SEEK MEDICAL CARE IMMEDIATELY.

PREVENT YOURSELF! MEDICAL CARE FOR TRIPS TO BRAZIL We wish you an illness and injury-free trip. However, should you require medical care, seek the nearest health facility. In an emergency, should you need transportation to an emergency service, please dial 192. FOR TRIPS ABROAD Medical care can be very expensive in several countries. Consider buying an international health insurance for the duration of your trip. Some countries have international free of charge care agreements with Brazil. Check out this information at the traveler s health website.

PREVENT YOURSELF! PROTECT YOURSELF! During long trips by bus or plane, avoid staying too long in one position. If possible, move around, stretch your arms and legs and walk. For those traveling by car: use caution when overtaking, respect speed limits and avoid alcohol consumption to ensure a safe trip. When possible, avoid sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Wear suitable clothing, hat and sunglasses and use appropriate sunscreen. CONDOM USE WILL HELP PROTECT AGAINST SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASES (STDS), INCLUDING HIV/AIDS, AND ALSO PREVENT UNPLANNED PREGNANCY.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF! HYGIENE Wash your hands with soap and water several times a day, especially before eating. When coughing or sneezing, cover your nose and mouth with single-use tissues. Avoid consuming foods in places with poor hygienic preparation and packaging conditions.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF! FOOD AND BEVERAGES Especially in the summer, it is important to drink plenty of fluids, preferably water, coconut water or juices. Wash thoroughly fruits and vegetables. Avoid raw or undercooked food. Beware! Packaged foods should be labeled to identify the manufacturer and the expiry date and packaging must be intact. TASTE VARIOUS MEALS THAT ARE RICH IN REGIONAL FOOD AND HEALTHY.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF! INSECTS AND ANIMALS Use repellent. The use of mosquito nets or curtains can reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria. In forest areas, use closed shoes and (preferably light colored) clothing that will protect you against insect and poisonous animals bites. SAFETY Avoid areas at risk of flooding or landslide. In rainy periods, the sudden water volume increase of waterfalls and rivers can cause serious accidents. Use footwear, comfortable clothing and protective equipment (lifejacket, helmet or other) when necessary.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF! RETURNING HOME Some diseases can manifest their symptoms when the traveler returns to his place of origin. Should this happen during or shortly after your arrival, seek health services and inform the doctor about your trip. This information can help in the diagnosis.
