1 Energy The Co-operative s Green Schools Revolution LESSON PLAN KS1: Tune in to turning off! Reducing energy consumption in school and at home. SUGGESTED TIME: 60 MINS Age group No. of pupils in cohort Classroom support (to be completed by teachers) This lesson will show children how energy is used at school and at home and how they can contribute to reducing energy waste. Learning objectives To know what we use energy for at school and at home. To identify how energy is wasted. To explore ways of saving energy. Success criteria I can identify objects which use energy at home and at school. I know how energy is wasted at school and at home. Curriculum links England English En1: 2: To listen, understand and respond to others, pupils should be taught to; c make relevant comments; e ask questions to clarify their understanding; 3a To join in as members of a group, pupils should be taught to; a take turns in speaking. Geography1: d identify and explain different views that people, including themselves, hold about topical geographical issues; e communicate in ways appropriate to the task and audience, 5: Knowledge and understanding of environmental change and sustainable development; recognise how people can improve the environment or damage it, and how decisions about places and environments affect the future quality of people's lives; b recognise how and why people may seek to manage environments sustainably, and to identify opportunities for their own involvement. Science Sc1: 2j use observations, measurements or other data to draw conclusions; l - use their scientific knowledge and understanding to explain observations, measurements or other data or conclusions. PSHE: 1c - to face new challenges positively by collecting information, looking for help, making responsible choices, and taking action.

Curriculum links continued Scotland Topical science By considering current issues of science, learners increasingly develop their understanding of scientific concepts and their capacity to form informed social, moral and ethical views. Wales PSE Learners should be given opportunities to promote their health and emotional well-being and moral and spiritual development; to become active citizens and promote sustainable development and global citizenship; and to prepare for lifelong learning. Northern Ireland The world around us: change over time Explore sources of energy in the world. Explore how and why people and animals move. Explore changes in energy and movement over time. Resources Worksheet 1: Energy or not energy. Worksheet 2: Standby. Worksheet 3: Energy diary. A range of art equipment for posters. Teaching activities Introduction (WALT) using appropriate pupil language. Ask children what they already know about energy. Create a mind map. Explain that electricity is a form of energy and that the energy we use in our school and homes comes from burning fossil fuels coal, oil and gas. Tell the class that it s important that we cut back on the energy we use where possible, because these fossil fuels will eventually run out. Ask the children to point out things in the classroom that use energy. Create a class list of things that use energy and things that do not use energy. Show children Worksheet 2: Standby. Ask key questions and elicit the answer that energy is still being used. (If possible, model to children turning an appliance on and off and leaving it on standby.) Let children know that leaving appliances on standby wastes energy. Development Independent, paired and group activity Children to complete the activities on Worksheet 1 in their science books or poster paper.

Differentiated activities SEN/G&T Before undertaking these activities, it s essential to remind children how to be safe around electricity. In groups, pupils should investigate things that use energy in school, which they can add to their earlier sorting activity in class. More able children could record the number of lights, computers etc are in each class using the tally sheet. SEN to have adult support. G & T to look for appliances on standby. Plenary What things at home use energy? How often are they used? Are any items left on standby? Why? Show children the energy diary and explain how they should use them for homework and follow-up activity. AfL assessment opportunities (WILF) Can children identify appliances/things that do and do not use energy? Are the children able to identify ways energy can be saved? Extension/ homework Create a bar chart using information found during the main activity. Follow-up lessons Use energy diary (Worksheet 3) Children should design labels to stick on appliances teaching others to switch them off when they re not in use. Distribute them to classes, to the management office and communal areas in the school. Whole-school activity Set up a Green Schools Revolution committee in your school and look at ways in which you can save energy. Conduct an energy audit. Create a campaign to reduce energy and water consumption in your school. Don t forget to enter the Green Schools Revolution national multimedia competition at
