There are forty maps showing over two thousand rooms, chambers and halls, over no less than seventeen levels. This is the ultimate dungeon and an ideal setting for your fantasy role playing games. It is generic so you can use these maps and plans with any system with equal ease. 2 Dolg was once the greatest of the Dwarvish underground holds. This huge maze of subterranean tunnels, rooms and chambers has long been battered and ruined. Many of the glorious Halls still remain (albeit crumbling) but most of the Dwarves have gone. At one time they were a mighty nation, carving their palaces and fortresses out of the living rock. Delving deep into the heart of mountains and hills in search of precious metals and jewels. Sadly this once great underground city is much diminished and the hold has been mostly abandoned to become a lair for all manner of dark and wild creatures. Dolg was once the centre of a great trading empire that exerted a stabilising influence over much of the barren north. But after the goblin wars and invasions of drakes few, if any, of the Kindred people who built Dolg survive. Most of the glittering halls have long since been plundered and left bare. Introduction Believed to be the greatest underground dwarvish city ever excavated, there are still a number of Dwarves in the city of Dolg. But they are few and far between and are unable to control more than a fraction of their ancient realm. The rest is given over to monsters and wild beasts. Two little enclaves of civilised Dwarves can be found by the intrepid explorer; on the ninth (in the old miner s quarter) and fifth levels (in what was once the artisans quarter) there are several hundred dwarves in each. However, they do not talk to each other or co-operate in any way. In fact these two groups were once at war with one another. The group in the miner s quarter have control of the winding mechanisms, and therefore the deep mines that can only be accessed by way of the shafts. But it is very difficult for them to get up to the surface or into the outside world. Generally they sell their ore and refined metals to dwarvish outcasts and outsiders in return for food and other goods (such as wood, which is very rare underground, and therefore valuable!) There are also outcast dwarves dotted about the caves and halls. These miners trade with each other, outsiders and sometimes the two main Dwarvish groups. 3 How to find your way around Dolg Dolg is a very big place ~ finding your way about, even if you have the maps, can be a challenge. Each map in this book has a label (e.g. Map 9a) which indicates that it is on level nine and that it is the first of several on that level, labelled; a, b, c and so on. In addition to the forty maps of halls and chambers shown on the overall view there are two surface maps (the north and south entrances) and a cut away diagram of the mine shafts. On the overall view (below,) each map is drawn in its appropriate position underground, showing its relationship with nearby maps, above, below and on the same level. As you travel through Dolg you will come across exits from maps, these are numbered. If you look up the number on the list (above the map) it will tell you where the exit leads. For example; 5 Stairs leading down to Map 6a(14). Map 6a is part of the sixth level below ground and the number in brackets is the location on the target map that the exit will lead you to. Stairs and ramps are marked with an arrow, which always indicate down. So you don t have to refer to any lists unless you are actually going up or down the stairs. Each map has been given a general title, where appropriate. For example; The Workshop Area; this indicates the nature of the uses of the rooms and chambers in that area. In addition to this the original function of each and every room is listed on the map. If you decide to use Dolg as a fully inhabited kingdom of Dwarves then the room will probably still be in use and the contents and inhabitants of the room are indicated by the listed description. If, on the other hand, you are using Dolg as an abandoned subterranean city, then it is best to remember that most rooms will probably have been cleared out long ago, with only traces, clues or hints of their original function being present. Dolg, at its height, was exceptionally rich and of course rumours abound concerning this wealth. But almost everything steal able was plundered long ago. There are bound to be occasional caches of treasure, tools or weapons, overlooked by previous looters but they will be rare and well hidden. Certainly in the upper levels there are likely to be slim pickings (except the Drake s hordes, of course!) Only things of little value or worth are likely to remain in most chambers but they still may indicate the rooms original use ~ a broken bed, or a pile of pit props, perhaps. Wooden doors are represented by single lines drawn at an angle to the opening, as if the door were partly open and unlocked; which, of course, it may not be. Stone doors are usually shown as a double line across the opening. Occasionally there are secret doors ~ these are always made of stone, are sometimes magical and are indicated by an s on the maps. Obviously secret doors are extremely hard to locate if closed ~ the expertise of the Dwarves in the making of such things being legendary. The diagonal shading around the rooms represents solid rock.
