1 The project is being carried out by the following researchers: Role Name Organisation Chief Investigator Professor Julian Trollor Department of Developmental Disability Neuropsychiatry, UNSW Co-Investigator/s Dr Elizabeth Evans As above Co-Investigator/s Ms Thea Kremser As above Co-Investigator/s Ms Kimberley Smith As above Research Funder NSW Ageing, Disability and Home Care (ADHC) What is the phone interview about? You are invited to take part in this phone interview because you currently work in a role supporting people with an intellectual disability. The aim of the interview is to find out about your experiences, knowledge and opinions in relation to working with people with an intellectual disability and a mental disorder. The interview is part of the wider Intellectual Disability Mental Health (IDMH) e-learning project, which aims to improve workforce knowledge on the mental health of people with an intellectual disability. In 2013, the department launched an online learning resource specifically tailored to mental health professionals. We are now in the process of expanding this to provide disability professionals with tailored modules that are appropriate for their roles. The findings from this interview will inform the content for the online resource. To participate in the phone interview you need to meet the following inclusion criteria: Be currently employed in a role that supports people with an intellectual disability Do I have to take part in this phone interview? Participation in the interview is completely voluntary. This Participant Information Statement tells you about the interview. Knowing what is involved will help you decide if you want to take part. Please read this information carefully. Ask questions about anything that you don t understand or want to know more about. If you decide you want to take part in the interview, you will be asked to: Sign the consent form; Keep a copy of this Participant Information Statement.

2 If you don t wish to take part, you don t have to. Your decision will not affect your relationship with The University of New South Wales or your employer. What does participation in this interview require, and are there any risks involved? If you choose to take part in the phone interview you will be contacted to arrange a suitable time to complete the interview. Prior to the interview two documents will be forwarded to you containing samples of material for the new disability e-learning modules. You do not need to do anything with these; however reading beforehand will assist in answering the interview questions. The phone interview will be conducted by a member of staff from the Department of Developmental Disability Neuropsychiatry and will run for around 30 minutes. You will be asked questions about your experiences working with people with an intellectual disability, your knowledge and attitudes of mental health services, and your experiences supporting people with an intellectual disability receiving mental health care. There will also be questions about the sample material sent to you, any feedback you have, and your thoughts on further training in relation to mental disorders that you feel would be helpful. With your permission we would like to digitially record the interview using an audio device. Aside from giving up your time, we do not expect that there will be any risks or costs associated with taking part in this interview. Will I be paid to participate in this phone interview? There are no costs associated with participating in this interview, nor will you be paid. What are the possible benefits of participation? We hope to use information we get from this interview to improve mental health care for people with an intellectual disability, through providing education about mental disorders for people who provide support What will happen to information about me? By signing the consent form you consent to the research team collecting and using information about you for the e-learning project, for the purpose outlined in the Participant Information Statement. It will only be disclosed with your permission. The audio digital recordings are for the purposes of the e-learning project only. After the phone interview we will transcribe the digital recordings. Your confidentiality will be ensured by de-identifying any personal details with

3 pseudonyms or codes. We will keep your digital recordings as an electronic file stored on a secure department network for seven years. Transcribed information only will be used in any publications or presentations. We will store written information about you in a locked filing cabinet at the Department of Developmental Disorders Neuropsychiatry for seven years. It is anticipated that the results of this phone interview will be published and/or presented in a variety of forums. In any publication and/or presentation, information will be provided in such a way that you will not be individually identifiable. You have the right to request access to the information about you that is collected and stored by the research team. You also have the right to request that any information with which you disagree be corrected. You can do this by contacting a member of the research team. How and when will I find out what the results of the phone interviews are? You have a right to receive feedback about the overall results of this study. You can tell us that you wish to receive feedback by ticking the appropriate box on the consent form and providing an address where suggested. This feedback will be in the form of a short summary of the findings from all of the phone interviews. You will receive this feedback after the phone interviews are finished. What if I want to withdraw from the project? If you do consent to participate, you may withdraw at any time. If you do withdraw, you will be asked to complete and sign the Withdrawal of Consent Form which is provided at the end of this document. You are free to stop the interview at any time. Unless you say that you want us to keep them, any recordings will be erased and the information you have provided will not be included in the study results. You may also refuse to answer any questions that you do not wish to answer during the interview. If you decide to leave the project, the researchers will not collect additional information from you. Please let us know at the time when you withdraw what you would like us to do with the information we have collected about you up to that point. If you wish your information will be removed from our study records and will not be included in the study results, up to the point that we have analysed and published the results.
