1 How to Install the NEW Expandable Frame Patent pending TM DISCLAIMER: HMI s new Aluminum Storm Door with Expandable Frame requires a special set of instructions to ensure a proper installation. Please carefully follow the instructions presented in this booklet. The basic steps are as follows: Before Starting the Installation Open the box carefully and measure both the door size and the opening. Make sure the new door size and opening both match. Check the door for any visible defects. Remove the glass and screen from the door for an easier and safer installation. Installation Instructions A. Install the Header - The Header Assembly consists of TWO parts, the Header and the backing U-Channel. It consists of THREE pre-drilled mounting holes and THREE pre-drilled adjustment/locking holes. B. Install the Hinge-side Frame - The Hinge-side frame has only TWO pre-drilled holes. C. Adjust the Header D. Install the Lock-side Frame - The Lock-side Frame Assembly consists of TWO parts, the Lock-side Frame and the backing U-Channel. E. Adjust the Lock-side Frame F. 4 Before starting the installation Your New Aluminum Storm Door with Expandable Frame should include the following: x20 Pan Head Screws - (#8) 1-¼ x2 x10 Self-tapping Adjustment Screws - ¼ x ¾ Pan Head Screws - (#8) 1/2 x1 Header Assembly - Consists of a Header Piece, Backing U-Channel, TWO pre-drilled mounting holes and THREE pre-drilled adjustment/locking holes. 4

5 How to install HMI s NEW Expandable Frame! Lock-side Frame - Consists of a Lock-side Piece, Backing U-Channel, THREE pre-drilled mounting holes and FIVE or SIX pre-drilled adjustment/locking holes. x1 x1 Hinge-side Frame x1 6 Storm Door Latch Lock Backing Plate 5

6 A. Installing The Header 1 Measure the width at the top of the opening. Starting from the hinge side, measure and mark the width onto the header assembly. Cut the header assembly to width, making sure you cut the lock side. Note: The header assembly is notched on both sides for convenience, but only the hinge side notch is needed for proper installation. Measure and Cut Notch Notch Hinge Side 2 Place the header assembly into position and using TWO (#8) 1-¼ pan head screws, fasten the header through the pre-drilled mounting holes. Note: These screws only fasten the U-Channel of the assembly to the jamb. Hinge Side 6

7 How to install HMI s NEW Expandable Frame! 3 Using the pre-drilled holes in the Header Assembly as a guide, drill THREE holes into the jamb with a 3/16 drill bit: ¾ deep. 4 While the header assembly is fastened, remove the header piece, leaving the U-Channel in place. Hinge Side 7

8 How to install HMI s NEW Expandable Frame! 5 Fasten THREE ¼ x ¾ self-tapping adjustment screws into the previously drilled locations. 6 Place the header back into position and using a soft rubber mallet, secure it into place. Hinge Side 8

9 B. Installing The Hinge-Side Frame 7 Measure the hinge-side opening from the threshold or floor to the header. Starting from the top of the hinge side, measure and mark the length at the bottom of the hinge-side frame. Cut the hinge-side frame ⅛ less than the measured length. Pre-Drilled Header The Floor or Threshold 8 Drill 9 Place 10 Fasten FIVE 3/16 holes though hinge-side frame using the V-groove as a guideline. the hinge-side frame into position and make sure the door is plumb. the hinge-side frame using FIVE (#8) 1-¼ pan head screws. 10 c. Adjusting The Header 11 Using the THREE adjustment screws, adjust the header to the door to achieve a proper and clean gap. Hinge Side 12 Fasten THREE (#8) 1-¼ pan head screws into the pre-drilled holes adjacent to the adjustment screws to lock the header into place. Hinge Side 10

11 D. Installing the Lock-Side Frame 13 Measure lock-side opening from threshold or floor to the adjusted header. Starting from the top of the lock-side frame, measure and mark the length onto the bottom of the frame. Cut the lock-side frame to length, making sure you cut off the bottom of the frame. Note: The lock-side frame is notched on both sides for convenience, but only top notch is needed for proper installation. ADJUSTMENT HOLE LOCKING HOLE Drill Through Drill Through Note: Based on the height of the door the lock-side frame will have either FIVE or SIX sets of adjustment and locking holes. 12 How to install HMI s NEW Expandable Frame! 17 Fasten 18 Place SIX (or five) ¼ x ¾ self-tapping adjustment screws through previously drilled holes. the lock-side frame back into position and secure it into place. 12

13 E. Adjusting the lock-side frame 19 Using 20 Place the adjustment screws, adjust the lock-side frame to the door to achieve a proper and clean gap. (#8) 1-¼ pan head screws into the pre-drilled holes adjacent to the adjustment screws to lock the frame into place. 13

14 F. Finishing 21 Measure 22 Measure the width at the top of the adjusted opening. Cut the screw cover to length and using a soft rubber mallet, secure it into place. the length of the adjusted height.
