2 Setting up the HP Stream Charging Plug your device into a mains socket using the lead supplied. Switching on The on/off switch is at the top left corner of the keyboard. Initial Setup When the device switches on for the first time, you can personalise its settings. 1. If the options on this screen are already set as shown (United Kingdom settings), do not make any changes and move on to the next screen. 2. Read and accept the licence terms 3. Then register the device with HP (optional). Make sure that the option to keep up to date is selected as shown above. Version August 2015 v3 Page 2

3 4. You can now give the device a name and personalise the colours used. 5. The next page should allow you to get online and will list available WiFi networks in range. NESCOL is the network that you should use but due to the way network access is currently set up you may not be able to connect at this stage. You will be able to connect later. If you cannot connect then please select the Skip this step option. 6. On the next screen please accept the Express Settings. 7. Then set up a password. This will prevent anyone but you using the device. 8. Your device will now complete the set up process. Version August 2015 v3 Page 3

4 9. When the Desktop or Start Screen loads the last thing for you to do is connect to the Wi-Fi Look at the bottom right of your Desktop and locate the Wi-Fi icon. You can also find this in the Charms bar on the right-hand side in Windows 8.1. Make sure that Wi-Fi is switched on then click the icon. From the WiFi network list click on NESCOL. Click on Connect The final step is to open a browser window (this may open automatically) then log in with your student number & current password. Version August 2015 v3 Page 4

5 How to download and use Microsoft Office As a student at North East Scotland College, you have access to the online Office 365 services such as Outlook to view your and browser versions of applications like Microsoft Word. The online versions of Microsoft Office applications do not have full functionality and you need to be online to make use of them. If you need more advanced functionality in Office applications or need to use these programs offline, you can download full versions of them to your college laptop. Step 1 Install Microsoft Office Log into Office 365 via Navigate to the page which shows the online Office applications such as Word or Excel. You should see the option to install Office on your PC at the top of the page: Untick the options for Bing and MSN if you do not want to use these services. Click on the Install Now button. Step 2 Set Up Confirm that you want to run the installation file by clicking Run. Once the installation process starts, you may see a number of messages on screen while the Office software is installed: Version August 2015 v3 Page 5

6 Step 3 Get to know Office When the installation is complete, you will have the option to set up the applications and find out more about Office You can watch an animation, if you wish. Now that Microsoft Office is installed on your laptop, you do not need to be connected to the Internet and signed into Office 365. However, if you need to save your work to OneDrive you do have to be connected and signed in. Work which is saved on OneDrive can be accessed from any device connected to the internet. 7 Step 4 Locate the Office Applications The Office applications are now available in the Apps area of your Windows 8.1 laptop To see this window, click on the down arrow button underneath the Start Screen tiles. You will now be able to locate all the Microsoft Office Applications You can pin these to the Start Screen or Taskbar by right-clicking each icon and selecting the option. 8 Step 5 Set up an Office Application Let s look at Microsoft Word. Click on the Word 2013 icon The first time you use Word, you will be asked which default file format you want to use. Click on the first option (Open XML formats) If you are not connected to OneDrive you will only be able to save your work to the laptop or another drive, like a pen drive, which is plugged into the laptop. The Save As screen will look like this if you are not connected to OneDrive. The Save As screen looks like this when you are connected to OneDrive. Step 6 - Using an Office Application To save your work you have the choice of saving to OneDrive, to your laptop or to a drive connected to your laptop. It is strongly recommended that you use OneDrive unless there is a good reason not to do so. The Save As screen looks like this when you save to OneDrive: You will see a confirmation message when your file has been saved to OneDrive. Version August 2015 v3 Page 8

9 Installing an Anti-virus Tool It is important that your laptop is protected by anti-virus software. You should also ensure that the Windows Firewall is switched on. The laptop may come with McAfee installed but this is just a trial version which only lasts for one month. If you don t have a subscription to other Anti-Virus software (such as Norton, McAfee or Kaspersky) then free alternatives are available. These can include Microsoft Security Essentials, Windows Defender or AVG Free. You should uninstall the McAfee trial before you install other anti-virus software. Once this is uninstalled then Windows Defender may be reactivated which you can continue to use if you wish. Information about using free or paid-for anti-virus is available later in this guide (Step 2). Step 1 Uninstall the existing McAfee anti-virus software To open the Control Panel: Click on the Search icon on the Start Screen Type in Control Panel and a link should appear. 10 Select the McAfee program and click on Uninstall/Change. Click both option boxes and select Remove. You may see this notice. Click on Remove Version August 2015 v3 Page 10

11 You may also see some warnings. Ignore these and wait for the removal process to finish. Restart your device when prompted. Step 2 Install free anti-virus or security software Microsoft Security Essentials or Windows Defender Microsoft Security Essentials & Windows Defender help to guard against viruses, spyware and other malicious software. It provides real-time protection for your home or small business PCs. It is free and we designed it to be simple to install and easy to use. It runs quietly and efficiently in the background so you don't have to worry about interruptions or making updates. You can download the version that you require from and install it if it isn t already on your PC. AVG Free Anti-Virus AVG provide free anti-virus protection with this software that will also help to protect you from viruses & spyware. You can download this from and follow the steps to install the software. Paid-for Subscriptions If you already have a paid-for anti-virus or Internet security subscription from another provider such as Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky or others then these may allow you to install it on more than one device.
