1 Our Garden at Chewton Primary School 1054
2 Vegetable from the garden were harvested to make pies for everyone. We were able to produce enough vegetables in the Autumn to support our fortnightly lunch program. The children take it in turns to be chef for the day. Parents coordinate this activity. Students who cook also serve and clean up at the end of the session.
3 This year we have 4 green teams. Dash, Uma and Kincade are leaders of our composting team. There is a bucket for each of the classrooms and the outside eating area. The compost is used to rejuvenate our garden beds. As principal I teach the environmental program to all students on a Wednesday afternoon. Our aim is to be a 5 star resoucesmart school by 2016.
4 The children really love our interpretive garden area. They were very keen to help move the gravel to upgrade the paths. Parents were not so keen on the orange stained clothes. The grade 3-6 class calculated the amount of gravel we would need for the 100mt of pathing. They did a great job a it made the distance perfectly.
5 The garden is made up of formal and explorative areas. The children love what we call the interpretive garden. Here they are able to make cubbies, crush rocks, build fairy dells and generally have a great time. We are will be rejuvenating this area on National Tree Day as some of the wattles have died from old age and the stress of this summers dry spell.
6 A few months ago I told the children that I had spent $500 on new play equipment for them. I had actually gone to one of the cheap shops and purchased some tarps and rope. A very popular purchase.
7 In December 2012 it was decided that we would use the water in the tank to gravity feed the vegetable gardens. This was a total failure due to holes in the tank. This tank was installed during the Summer break but did not fill unit May of this year. We plan to use the overflow to feed a rain garden. The children will design and construct the garden with the help of one of our committed parents. This is a 3-6 project as the p-2 class is looking after the vegetable garden each Wednesday afternoon.
8 At the start of the year we just had one old green compost bin. With the newly formed compost committee we decided it was vital that emptying compost had some fun element. The rotating bin works very well for this. Last month we purchased a second free standing bin. We are currently comparing the compost from the 3 bins. The rotary bin is winning hands down. It was important that composting was not another teacher driven job. So far so good. Parents also bring in food for the chooks in the pen next door.
9 Our garden has a range of play areas and lots of places that the children can be creative. They love this sandpit surrounded by reeds and grasses that are very tough and can cope with being sat on and having reeds picked to add to the sand creation. We plan to put a solid roof on this area during 2014 as it was voted as one of the favoured places to play. Playgroup use our sandpit every week during the warmer months.
10 When you have a garden close to bush land, you can expect the odd visitor. The snake in the bag was found in the toilet block as I was about to lock up for home time. There were lots of snake stories the next day. We do not allow the children into the interpretive garden during summer and the cubbies have to be pulled down.
11 The lady next door always loves to walk her dogs in our school grounds. As a thank you, she donated this metal dog. The little kids call him Gruff as he sits near the chain for the bell.
12 Our school ground is often used by community groups and on this day late last year we were hosting a range of Connecting Country workshops on the school grounds. These work shops were open to the entire Chewton community.
13 There are lots of quiet areas in the garden where you can chill out on your own.
14 Not all of our garden is made of the real thing but this artificial turf was installed a few years ago when it became evident that watering grass was not going to be cost effective or environmentally friendly. The oval is great for many of our sporting activities. This session was during bike education.
15 This year we grew our own mushrooms and invited Mushroom Man to help us. The mushroom compost was then used on our garden. We sold the mushrooms that were not used in our cooking program. We grew over 20kg of mushroom this year with the profits going toward chook food as our egg sales do not cover the cost of keeping our flock.
16 Mosaics line our garden areas. Many of them require repair as it can be very tempting to take a small piece and bury it as a treasure. Our 4 main mosaics will have a make over as part of our art classes in term 3. The children have be en working on a series of mosaic pavers that will line the footpath. This project is part of our garden art teaching unit.
17 Winter is a great time for natives. This corea is currently in flower. The children have taken cuttings from this bush that we hope will be ready for sale this spring.
18 We own an extra 50mt of ground behind our back fence. During a recent school review, the children requested that the back fence be moved to add this area to our playground. School council would prefer that it stayed in a more natural state however the space is well used and the children do revegetation work here on a regular basis. This photo was taken at our end of term cookout where the children work in teams to light their fires and cook lunch. Parents are invited and encouraged to come along.
19 The vegetable gardens were build 5 years ago and the soil had become hydrophobic. This summer we removed all the soil, lined the bed and mixed mushroom compost. All of the work was done by parents. Families arrived with loads of horse manure. We added saturaid to the soil and mulched well. We purchased our new tank and can gravity feed with water. We do need to buy a pump next year. Our winter crop is coming on very well and we will be able to use our vegetables during this years Buda Fest in September.
20 Our focus for the garden this year has been child friendly spaces. This means that we do need to sacrifice some of the more formal elements of the layout however it remains a beautiful space that is always admired by visitors. From our veranda we look over the garden the near by hills. We are very proud of what we have achieved with our small school community.
