5 5. Content and outline 5.1 Courses The courses included in Ethology and Animal Welfare Bachelor s Programme have been approved by the Board of Education on first and second cycle (GUN) at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science and are listed in Appendix 2 to the programme syllabus. The contents and learning outcomes of the courses are stated in the course syllabus of each course. 5.2 Outline Academic year 1 The programme begins with the following integrated subjects: ethology, animal protection, animal welfare, ethics, and evolutionary biology. It also introduces students to the profession in these areas and to the teaching methodology used within the programme. The introduction also provides a basic understanding of university studies and the scientific approach. In the second semester the student take subjects such as the systematics and morphology of animals, microbiology, parasitology, biochemistry, and animal husbandry including practise. Academic year 2 Year 2 starts with parallel and partly integrated courses in physiology and feeding, which aim to give the students possibilities to see the connections between the two subjects. The follows a short course in ethology and anthrozoology, where the students for the first time come in contact with the relationship between humans and animals. The third semester in completed with statistics for biologists. During the second half of year 2, the second course in animal husbandry is given, including animal health and infectious disease control. The second year is completed with two parallel courses, one in genetics and breeding and the other in animal welfare and legislation, which together illustrate the animal welfare problems that can occur within the breeding of extreme races. Academic year 3 During the third year, the program allows for a certain adoption of a profile, where they may choose between ethology and animal welfare. During the last semester students can choose between courses in conservation biology in Sweden and Kenya, anthrozoology including animal owner counselling, and animal welfare with a focus on the working areas of animal welfare inspectors. The entire programme is guided by the integration of various disciplines to provide an increased opportunity for a holistic approach and to understand connections between different subjects. 5(9)
6 The teaching is organized as problem-based learning (PBL) with modules of pre-proficiency-based training phases. PBL is characterized by real situations, self-directed learning and group work. In the skill-based modules the students practise communication (in speech and writing), analysis, evaluation and social interaction in a scientific context. The programme provides practical skills through workplace-based modules in zoos or in other practical husbandry. Students are also given opportunities to look at entrepreneurship and self-employment. Degree Project The programme is completed with an independent project (degree project) comprising 15 credits, in which the students apply their knowledge, skills and approach on a current issue within the field of ethology and animal welfare. 6. Examination Each course includes one or several tests. The grading scales are U (5-4-3-Fail). The grade Pass signifies that the student has obtained the grade Pass on all tests included in the course and also meets the participation requirements for all the compulsory course elements.
