1 Uploading a Video to YouTube You can upload a video for public or private viewing to YouTube for free. In this documentation you will learn how to create an account with YouTube, upload a video, and then make the video available. Create an Account 1. Go to in your browser. 2. In the upper right hand corner of the window click Create Account. 3. Create a username. Click Check Availability to make sure the name is available. 4. Leave United States selected in the Location box. 5. Enter your zip code in the Postal Code box. 6. Select your birth date in the drop-down boxes and check off your gender. 7. Select I accept. Note: YouTube requires you to link your YouTube account with an account.

2 8. You will be prompted to enter information for a Google account if you already have one OR to create a YouTube Google account based on your current address. Note: If you are creating an account for BARD College, please contact Web Services at to discuss using an alias address when creating the YouTube account. If you have a Google Account, use your Google username and password in the left box. Click Sign in. If you don t have a Google Account, put in your Bard address and create a new password in the right box. (It is recommended that you NOT use your Bard password, but create a new one for this purpose.) Type the word verification and click Create New Account and Finish. Note: Write down any passwords and usernames you create for later reference. 9. Once you have logged in or created a new account, you will be shown a confirmation message by YouTube with your account username and YouTube Google Account address shown. You are now ready to use YouTube. 2

3 Uploading a Video to YouTube File Type YouTube accepts a wide range of video file formats. The video files below are all accepted by YouTube. Some video formats work best and are most compatible with certain computers, software or devices. * Windows Media Video (.WMV) *.3GP (cell phones) *.AVI (windows) *.MOV (mac) *.MP4 (ipod/psp) *.MPEG *.FLV (adobe flash) *.MKV (h.264) If you do not think your current video file format is recognized by YouTube, you may get the best uploading results from converting your file to MPEG4 video with MP3 audio. File Size There are two ways to upload your video: by using the Single File Uploader or the YouTube Uploader (for multiple files). With either of these methods, your videos can be up to 2GB in size and 10 minutes long. Please note, the longer and/or higher quality your video is, the more compression will be required to fit it into 2GB. You can compress your video using movie editors, like Windows MovieMaker or Apple imovie. 3

4 Uploading a Single Video Once you've finished editing your video, made sure it's less than 10 minutes, smaller than 2GB in size, and in an acceptable format, you're ready to upload it. 1. Go to YouTube.com and login to your account. 2. Click in the upper-right-hand corner of any YouTube page. 3. Click 4. Click the Browse button to browse for the video file you'd like to upload to our site. Select the file you want to upload. It will start the uploading process. When the video is finished uploading you will see the following window indicating your upload was successful. 5. Enter information about your video in the relevant fields (including Title, Description, Tags, and Category). You're not required to provide specific information, but the more information you include, the easier it is for users to find your video! See Limiting Exposure of Your Video later in this documentation for Private videos. 6. Click to save the updates you've made to the video file. 4

5 7. If your video uploads successfully you will see the following window and message: 8. Next, click Go to My Videos. This window shows a thumbnail representing your video as well as other information about your video. Click Play to view your video as it will be seen on YouTube. Note: It can take from a couple minutes to an hour for your video to upload to YouTube. If you're receiving an error with your Upload, you might want to make sure you're attempting to upload a file that's recognized by YouTube. YouTube accepts video files from most digital cameras and camcorders, and cell phones in the.avi,.mov,.wmv, and.mpg file formats. 5

6 Editing Your Video Once you ve uploaded a video, you may want to make changes to certain options such as description, tags, thumbnail, and privacy. 1. Sign on to YouTube. Select MyVideos>Edit. 2. On this page you can change the title, description, tags, privacy, and category of your video. You can also select a different thumbnail to represent your video and decide if you want to allow comments. When you are done, click at the bottom of the page. You should see on the next page. 6

7 Sharing Public Videos You can share your video on YouTube in one of two ways. You can provide a link to your video or embed a link to your video on a webpage. Share a Link 1. Login to YouTube. In the upper right hand corner, in your account name drop down menu, select My Videos. 2. Find your video and click. 7

8 3. To the right of your video will be a box with URL and Embed information. If you select and copy the URL address, you can copy and then paste it as the link to your video, which works like any other url link. If you select and copy the Embed html code, you can paste it into web pages, wikis, blogs, or discussion posts. You will need to be able to use an html editor to do this. 4. Once you are done using either of these codes, you can now sign out of YouTube. Note: Keep in mind that public videos are also accessible by chance if people search for video content such as yours using tags or other search terms. Due to the high number of videos on YouTube this is a slim possibility, but is still a consideration. 8

9 Limiting Exposure of Your Video If you would like to limit the exposure of one of your videos, you can set it to be a Private video. If you make your video private then only 25 other users will be able to view the video. In order to do this, you'll need to send these 25 other people a special link that goes to the private video. Other users who haven't received the link invite will not be able to view the video as its listed as private. The video will not appear on your channel, in Groups, search results, playlists etc.. Making Your Video Private 1. Click the Account link located (at the top-right of any page ). 2. Then click the Uploaded Videos link. Choose the video you want to edit and click the Edit button below the video thumbnail. 3. Under the Broadcasting and Sharing Options section (on the left-hand side of the page towards the bottom) you'll see Privacy options. Click the little black arrow / triangle to expand and see all your privacy options. 4. You'll see the option to make the video public or private. 5. If you'd like all users to be able to see / view your video, you should set your video to Public. 6. If you'd like to make your video private, click and select the Private option. 7. Save the changes you made to your video's settings by clicking the Save Changes button. Your video will now be set to private. Sharing Private videos Once you've set the video to private you'll be able to send the video's private URL with your contacts. Once your contacts receive the private URL, they'll be able to sign into their YouTube account and watch the video. Here's how to find and send a private video's private URL: 1. Sign into your YouTube account and click the Account link located (at the top-right of any page ). 9

10 2. Then click the Uploaded Videos link. Click and choose the video you want to send to your friends. Then, click the Edit button. 3. Under the Broadcasting and Sharing Options section (on the left-hand side of the page towards the bottom) you'll see "Privacy" options. Click the little black arrow / triangle to expand and see all your privacy options (if its not already open and you cannot see your privacy options). 4. If the video's set to private, there will be a URL section below the "Private" option. This is the special private link that you will send to (up to) twenty five contacts so that they can watch your private video. 5. / send a private message including the private video's special URL. When your friends receive the invitation, they'll need to: Sign into their YouTube account Click the video URL They'll then be able to watch the video That's it! You've now learned how to share a private video with your contacts! Notes: You cannot share a private video with more than 25 other users. If you'd like to share the video with more people, you'll need to set the video to "public". The "Limited Access" box won't stay permanently selected until someone accesses your video for the first time- even if you've marked the video as private and sent the video to your friends already. Someone must first watch the video before the "Limited Access" box will appear selected. Once a videos is shared via the private URL, it cannot be unshared. Therefore, use your 25 invites there wisely! In order to watch a private video, your contacts must already have a YouTube account. If they don't already have an account, they'll first need to sign up for an account, and then once they've activated their account they'll then be able to sign in and watch the private video you sent them. If they do not sign into their account before watching the video, the video will not load. 10
