1 Using Your Blood Glucose Meter Accu-Chek Introduction Monitoring your blood glucose level is important to controlling your diabetes. This program shows you how to use your blood glucose monitoring meter. Your health care provider may ask you to view this program to help you understand how you will be using your blood glucose meter to test your blood glucose. This reference summary explains the different parts of the glucose meter. It shows you how to check that your meter is working properly and explains how to properly use the device. Glucose Monitoring System The blood glucose monitoring system consists of the following parts: 1. The blood glucose monitoring meter, or glucose meter. 2. The test strips. 3. The control solution. Display Data Port The glucose meter is the device that displays your blood sugar level. Notice the following parts: The Display is where symbols, simple messages and your test results will appear. The Test Port is where you insert the test strip. The meter will turn on automatically when you Left insert a test strip. Arrow The Right Arrow button is used to enter memory, adjust settings and scroll through results. Test Port The Data Port can be used to move the test results stored in the glucose meter to a computer, where they can be analyzed. Right Arrow The Left Arrow button is used to enter memory, adjust settings and scroll through results. 1

2 The test strip is where you apply the drop of blood. Your blood sugar level will appear in a few seconds after applying the drop of blood. The test strip is inserted Test Strip with the silver-colored bars into the meter, and the yellow window facing up and toward you. You push the test strip in firmly until it will go no further. The other end of the strip is called the top edge. There is a blue or red strip with a yellow window, which is called the test strip. The blood should be applied at the edge of the yellow window and not on top of it. It will be automatically drawn into the yellow window. If enough blood has been applied to the top edge, you will see the blood drawing into the yellow window completely covering the yellow. If there is not enough blood and some yellow is showing, you will need to apply another drop within 15 seconds or discard the test strip and start over with a new one. When you insert the test strip, the glucose meter will turn on automatically. With clean, dry hands you may touch the test strip anywhere on its surface when removing it from the vial. To produce accurate test results, you should use the test strips, glucose meter and the control solution from the same manufacturer. You will also need sterile lancets. Before using the lancet, you will twist the lancet protective disk to expose the needle. Sterile lancets are for a single use only. Never share a lancet or a blood sampler with anyone. Many infectious diseases, such as AIDS, can go from one person to another through blood remaining on a re-used shared lancet. Protective Disk Sterile Lancet The Accu-Chek lancet device is an adjustable blood sampler that can make it easier for you to lance the fingertip with a lancet. You can use a lancet device from another manufacturer. The control solution is used to check that the meter and the test strips are working together as a system. It is also used to check that you are performing the test correctly. Testing your blood sugar should take about 2 minutes after you finish practicing. The steps are simply as follows: 2

3 First, you prepare the meter and make sure it is working. Second, you take a blood sample. In this computer program, we will show you how to take a blood sample from the finger. If you are interested in taking a blood sample from your arm, ask your health care provider to show you how. Third, the blood sample is applied to the test strip. You will wait a few seconds for the results to appear on the display. Generally, test results below 70 mg/dl mean low blood glucose. Test results greater than 180 mg/dl mean high blood glucose. Your health care provider will tell you which range is right for you. Before Testing Your Blood Before testing your blood sugar you should perform some tests to make sure that the meter is working. These testing activities include: Checking the meter display. Coding the meter. Checking the system. Checking the Meter Display Your meter needs little maintenance with normal use. It automatically tests itself every time you turn it on and lets you know if something is wrong. If you think the meter is not working properly, turn off the meter, then press and hold the On/Off button to see the complete display. All the sections should be clear and look exactly like the picture to the right. If not, call the manufacturer at the Customer Support number provided in the manual. The following image shows possible messages that can appear on the display screen

4 These messages do not appear all together. 1. The meter is not coded or the code key is not all the way in. 2. Battery power is low. Change the battery soon. 3. Your blood sugar level is below your defined hypo level. 4. The meter is being operated outside of the appropriate temperature range. 5. The code key is faulty or was removed. Turn off the meter and reinsert the code key again. 6. Your blood sugar level may be extremely high or a meter or strip error has happened. 7. The meter has failed its internal electronic check. Coding the Meter Your glucose meter produces accurate results. This makes it easier for you and your health care provider to compare your meter results with laboratory results. When you buy new test strips, you should calibrate the meter to go with the test strips. This is called coding the meter. Your meter will remember the code number of the last supply of test strips you used in the machine. Each time you test, you will check that the code number on the meter display matches the code number on the test strip vial. When you use new test strips, you should code the meter. You must code the meter the first time you use it. If you do not code the meter correctly, your test results will be incorrect. Use only the Control Solution from the manufacturer of your glucose meter. The next section reviews coding the meter step by step: 1. Find the code on the test strip vial. 2. Make sure the meter is turned off. Insert code key into the code key slot. It should easily snap into place. Don t force it into the meter. It only goes in one way - numbers out and ridges up. 3. Find the code on the meter. Press the On/Off button to turn the meter on. Next, the code number will appear on the display. The first time you use the meter, three dashes --- will appear showing that there is no code selected yet. 4. Compare the 2 codes. Make sure the code on the display matches the code on the test strip vial. 4

5 If the code number on the display does not match the code number on the test strip vial, call the manufacturer s Customer Support. Every time you open a new box of test strips, you will throw away the old code key and code the meter using the new code key of the new box of test strips. Checking the System The control solution is used to check that the system is working right. It is also used for you to practice using the system. The control solution has a known amount of glucose. When you do a control solution check, you will know that the meter is working well. If the results of the control solution check give an error, you may not be doing the test correctly. Do it again. If you continue to get control solution errors, the glucose meter may not be working properly. Do not use it and call the manufacturer s representative or Customer Support. If it is the first time you use the glucose meter, the control solution is a great way to practice doing the test correctly without lancing your finger every time to get a blood drop. If you are a first time user of the glucose meter, practice with the control solution until you can do three tests in a row that are correct. Then you will be ready to test your blood. How to do a Control Solution Test 1. Insert a test strip The meter will turn on automatically and the display check will appear briefly. The code number will appear. Make sure the code on the meter matches the code on the test strip vial. 2. Indicate it is a control solution test When you see the flashing drop on the display, press and release the Right Arrow once to select the L1 control. This will ensure that the results are not stored in the meter. 5

6 3. Apply control solution Briefly roll the bottle of control solution, open it, squeeze one drop on a paper towel, and wipe the tip of the bottle clean. Then touch and hold one drop of control solution to the edge of the yellow window. 4. Read the results When the test is done, the meter displays the test result as OK or Err for error. The label on the test strip vial shows the acceptable ranges for Level 1 solution. Your control test results should be within the listed range. The OK message indicates it is within the range. If the test result indicates Err, it means it falls outside the range printed on the test strip vial. You should repeat the test. Out-of-range results may be caused by many factors such as: 1. Error in performing the test, such as not following procedures. 2. Expired control solution or a control solution that is too warm or too cold. 3. Expiration of the test strips. 4. Meter malfunction. The label on your test strip shows two levels of test solutions: Level 1 and Level 2. Level 1 is all you need to do most of the time. If you want to test Level 2, you will need a Level 2 solution. During the control test, you will press the Right Arrow key twice to select Level 2 instead of Level 1. How to Get a Drop of Blood Follow these steps to get a drop of blood from your fingertip using the sterile lancet and the lancet device: 1. Insert a lancet into the lancet device. Pull off the cap then insert a lancet until it clicks. Twist off the lancet protective cover. Snap the cap back on after lining up the notches. Twist the cap of the blood sampler counterclockwise to remove it. 6

7 2. Adjust the puncture depth. Twist the cap to set the lancet depth. Start at 2 or 3. For tougher skin dial to a higher number. 3. Cock the blood sampler. Press the plunger like a pen until it clicks. The release button turns yellow when the device is ready. 4. Wash your hands and puncture site. Use warm, soapy water. Rinse and dry thoroughly. 5. Lance the puncture site. Hold the blood sampler firmly against the side of your finger. Press the release button. 6. Massage the finger. Gently massage the finger to obtain a round drop of blood. Do not squeeze excessively on the puncture site. Do not smear the blood sample. You can now proceed with your blood glucose test. Step-by-Step Instructions Prepare the Meter Gather all supplies needed for the glucose test. 1. Insert the test strip, silver-colored bars end first and facing up into the test port. Make sure that you push it firmly in all the way to turn the meter on automatically. 2. Wait for the code number to appear. 3. Check that the code number matches the code number on the test strip vial. If not, code the meter if necessary. 4. Wait for the blood drop symbol to appear. Prepare the blood sampler 1. Pull off the cap of the lancet device. 2. Insert a lancet into the lancet device. Always use a new, sterile lancet. Lancets are for single use only. Push down firmly until it is fully seated. Do not twist the lancet. 3. Twist the protective cover until it separates from the lancet. 4. Snap the cap back on after lining up the notches. 7

8 5. Adjust the puncture depth setting if necessary. If needed, twist the cap toward the smaller number for a shallower puncture. Or twist the cap toward the larger number for a deeper puncture. 6. Press the plunger until it clicks. The release button turns yellow when the device is ready. 7. Wash your hands with soap and warm water. Rinse and dry thoroughly. 8. Lance your fingertip. Hold the blood sampler firmly against the side of your finger then press the release button. Discard the used lancet. 9. Gently massage the finger to obtain the required blood sample size. Do not squeeze excessively on the puncture site. Do not smear the blood sample. The blood sample should be the size of the head of a straight pin. Apply the blood to the test strip 1. Make sure the blood drop symbol is still displaying. If not, turn the meter on. 2. Touch and hold the round drop of blood to the edge of the yellow window. Make sure the yellow window fills completely. 3. Check the confirmation window. If you still see yellow, apply another drop of blood within 15 seconds or start over with a new test strip. Read the results 1. Wait for the results to display. Your blood glucose test result will appear after an hourglass flashes on the screen. 8

9 2. Read the results. The blood glucose test results are automatically stored in the meter memory. You may want to record them in your logbook. 3. Turn off the meter. When you remove the test strip the meter will turn off automatically after 90 seconds. Cleaning up After reading your blood results, remember to remove the lancet by removing the cap then pushing forward on the ejector to eject the lancet directly into a puncture-proof container. You may want to replace the protective disk on the lancet before ejecting the lancet. Place the disk on a hard surface, such as a table, and push the exposed tip into the protective disk. Always be careful and point the lancet down and away. Return the ejection control to the middle position and replace the cap. Your lancet device is now ready for the next blood glucose test. Turn the meter off by removing the strip. Never use the test strip again. Caring for Your System Cleaning The Meter Since no blood or control solution comes in contact with the meter, there is no special cleaning required. Avoid getting dirt, dust, blood, control solution or water inside the meter through the test port or data port. Store the meter in its carrying case after each use. A cloth dampened with water and mild detergent can be used to wipe down the outside of the meter. The Test Strips After removing a test strip from the vial, immediately replace the vial cap and close it tightly. Use each test strip immediately after removing it from the vial. Do not cut, bend or alter a test strip in any way. Store the test strips in their original vial only. Store the vial in a cool, dry place between 32 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep them away from direct sunlight and heat. Do not store in a refrigerator. Check the expiration date printed on the test strip vial. 9

10 Do not use if expired because it may cause inaccurate results. Throw the test strips away if expired. After you take a test strip out of the vial, be sure to use it within three minutes. The Control Solution Use only the control solution from the manufacturer of your glucose meter. Store with the test strip vials at a temperature of less than 90 degrees. Do not refrigerate. Check the expiration date on the control solution vial. Do not use if expired. Use the solution for only 3 Months after opening. Record the discard date on the control solution vial (the date opened plus 3 months). Throw away after 3 months. Summary Diabetes can be a serious disease that can cause complications, which can lead to death. Controlling diabetes through eating habits, exercising and monitoring glucose in the blood is now possible thanks to recent medical advances. Your blood glucose meter is one of these recent advances in medicine. It is accurate, easy to use and can remember your previous test results. The Owner s Booklet that comes with your glucose meter includes other information such as how to set the date and time of the meter, how to use the meter s memory and how to interpret display messages. Your health care providers are available to answer any questions you may have about managing your diabetes. Consult with them after using this program to answer any questions about the meter and testing your blood. 10
