SPAIN IS A LEADING LOCATION FOR THE AGRICULTURE & FOOD INDUSTRIES Agricultural output 2011 in millions (Top 10 producer countries in EU) Spain has one of the leading agricultural industries in Europe. The country is the largest producer of fruit and olive oil, the second largest producer of pork and the third largest producer of vegetables in the EU. With 1.25m hectares dedicated to natural production, Spain is also the EU's largest grower of organic produce. In 2009, Spain had close to 990,000 registered agrarian operations that employed nearly 890,000 people. About half of all farms are small properties with less than 5 ha, and 5% are larger than 100 ha. Spain is also the fourth largest food and drink producer in Europe. In 2010, this manufacturing sector comprised over 30,000 companies with close to 450,000 employees that generated 81.4 billion in revenues. ANDALUSIA IS A LEADING SPANISH AGRICULTURE & FOOD REGION Both agriculture and food manufacturing are well established sectors with a long tradition in Andalusia and have a major economic and social impact. With a share of over 20% of the region s employment, the food & beverage industry is Andalusia s most important sector. Overall, there are about 5,400 companies employing around 50,000 people and generating revenues over 13 billion. Within Spain, Andalusia is the second most important region for food industry related jobs and income. This is further underlined by the importance of the primary sector, which has a 4.5% share of GDP (compared to 2.7% in Spain). ANDALUSIA IS PARTICULARLY STRONG IN ORGANIC AGRICULTURE Operators of organic agricultural land in Andalusia Share of European surface used for organic agriculture (2009) Spain is the organic producer in the European Union and 6th worldwide. Andalusia leads Spain with a 54% share of Spain s organic agriculture surface. of Andalusia s surface is dedicated to organic agriculture, of which 80% is used for livestock. Major products are olive oil, cereal, nuts and dried fruits. Andalusia is the producer of olive oil and olives and the second largest strawberry producer worldwide as well as the largest European producer of fruit and vegetables. Other market segments such as agricultural equipment, especially for irrigation, offer additional opportunities. Andalusia holds almost 30% of Spain s irrigated surface. There is also a growing use of agricultural products or residues as feedstock for biofuels and bioplastics. 7

ANDALUSIA IS ALSO STRONG IN GREEN BIOTECHNOLOGY & FUNCTIONAL FOODS Andalusia is Spain s second most important biotech region and the region is now home to over 100 firms, that generate over 580m in annual revenues. Almost half of Andalusia s biotech companies are active in the field of green biotechnology, building on the region s strengths in the agriculture & food sector. 120 of the 550 externally funded research groups are focused on green biotechnology and provide partnering opportunities for companies wishing to engage in food biotechnology R&D. In addition, research in this area received almost 40% of the investment in biotechnology, both public and private, over the past years in Andalusia. The Health Science Technology Park (PTS) in Granada houses both the Andalusian BioRegion cluster as well as the recently established Functional Foods Research and Development Centre (CIDAF) set to become an international centre of reference for R & D in the area of functional foods. 8

9 4. ANDALUSIA HAS AVAILABLE LABOUR FOR NEW INVESTMENTS Andalusia has a younger population than the European average and is home to Spain s largest university body. About 216,000 students and 32,500 graduates annually increase the region s pool of qualified labour. There are 10 public universities, two of which belong to the top ten Spanish public universities in terms of research productivity. The food industry sector s share of new employment creation is significant and the industry in particular continues to create opportunities for graduates. A recent skills audit for Andalusia has shown that in food sciences, almost 300,000 professionals currently work or have worked in a technical/analytical role in the past. The labour force is highly educated with over 70% holding at least a first university degree. With 37% of the workforce actually utilizing their specific skills, Andalusia lies above the Western European average of 30%. Almost half of the food sciences skills are concentrated in Seville and Malaga, followed by Granada and Jaen. MAJOR AGRIFOOD COMPANIES HAVE A PRESENCE IN ANDALUSIA This major global producer and distributor of yeast and bakery ingredients headquartered in the UK, operates a yeast factory and a sugar refinery in Cordoba. The major German wholesaler of frozen foods located its Spanish administrative headquarters as well logistics warehouse in Cordoba from where it offers home delivery service across the country. The major US agrifood and industrial conglomerate opened its first Andalusian location in In 2007, it created a Joint Venture with Hojiblanca, the biggest virgin olive oil producer worldwide. Danone, the major French dairy products company, started to produce yogurts in Seville in The annual production capacity of the 37,000 m 2 plant has now reached 55 thousand tons of yogurt. Kraft Foods, the major US food company, has been present in Spain since in 1983, it acquired the Sevillian coffee company Saimaza and has been successfully operating the plant since then. Lactalis, a French dairy products company, acquired Ebro Puleva In 2010 to become the second biggest dairy products manufacturer in Spain. It is also among the most important Spanish biotech R&D investors. Nutreco, the Dutch producer of animal nutrition, has a strong manufacturing and R&D presence across Spain. In Andalusia, the company focuses on poultry production as part of its Sada Group subsidiary. PepsiCo, the major US food and beverage company, has been present in Spain for almost 40 years. In Sevilla, the company operates a bottling plant. The company, owned by the French Group Daremon, opened a plant in Santaella (Cordoba) for the production of fine herbs in 2010, involving an investment of 12 million. Euralis, the major French seed producer, has been present in Spain for 40 years, and operates a seed plant in Seville. The company engages both in production and biotech and genetic engineering R&D. Netherlands-based Refresco, a leading European manufacturer of private label soft drinks and fruit juices, has been present in Spain since 2009, when it opened a bottling plant in Cordoba. Sovena, the Portuguese olive oil and agrifood company, acquired Sevilla-based Agribética. Since then, the company has been growing its refining and bottling of olive and vegetable oils business.

INTERNATIONAL FOOD TESTIMONIALS FOR ANDALUSIA A global leader in dietary supplements, Abbot (US) acquired the Puleva nutrition division in Granada in In 2007, Abbott expanded the plant to almost triple its production capacity to meet the growing demand for functional foods. The company also has an R&D department entirely composed of local staff, from which it releases innovative ingredients processed with technologies to manufacture dietary supplements. In 2000, Netherland-based Heineken bought Cruzcampo, Spain s largest beer producer. In the course of the consolidation of its business in Andalusia, its new plant in Seville was built to be the most modern beer factory in Europe, creating over 2000 direct and indirect jobs. We have made a firm decision to remain in Andalusia, not only because the company has operated here for over 100 years, but also, crucially, because the plants are profitable.
